New electricity tariff: Buhari may face first Labour showdown as NLC, TUC spit fire

Organised Labour on Friday cautioned the federal government against implementing the new electricity tariff, to avoid industrial crisis in the country.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Electricity Consumer Protection Forum gave the warning at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos.

Ayuba Wabba, NLC president, said that labour would mobilse workers and civil society groups to protest and picket all the electricity distribution companies should the federal government implement the tariff as scheduled on February 1.

Wabba described the 40 to 45 per cent increase as exploitative and illegal, and urged Nigerians to reject it.

“We reject the tariff increase, based on the fact that due process was not followed according to the law. Organised labour and civil society groups were not consulted,” he said.

“There has also not been a significant improvement in the power supply situation since it was privatized.”

He also said DISCOs had promised to provide pre-paid meters for its consumers within 18 months, but had not met the expectations of the people.

“The DISCOs promised to give Nigerians meters in 18 months, but they failed. This is corruption and it is ripping Nigerians off their money,” he said.

Wabba said the increase in electricity tariff was not right because there was already a court injunction before Muhammed Idris, a justice of the federal high court, Lagos.

According to him, the case is between Toluwani Yemi-Adebiyi, a lawyer, versus the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and others, that there will be no increment until the determination of the substantive suit.

“The increment negates the present biting and prevailing economic situation and will further impoverish the people,” Wabba said.

He urged the government to halt the implementation of the new tariff, as well as audit the DISCOs since they have fully paid the privatisation money.

Also speaking, Bobboi Kaigama, TUC President, urged NERC not to implement the new tariff until there was a substantive improvement in the electricity supply situation.

“If by February 1, the federal government implements the policy, we will shut down all DISCOs.

There should be an increase indicated in service delivery, before the proposed new tariff,” he said.

In his remarks, Adeola Samuel-Ilori, the coordinator, Consumer Protection Forum, said the organisation had engaged distribution companies several times on the issue of estimated billing without result.

Samuel-Ilori said it was regrettable that estimated billing was passed by the national assembly and it had become statutory.

He, however, said that if the DISCOs were able to meter all Nigerians within the 18 months gestation period, the problem of estimated billing would have been solved.

Yemi-Adebiyi, who represented consumers at the meeting, said unless Nigerians were provided with meters within the 18 months’ time frame, any increase would be illegal.

He said anybody that circumvents the court order would be jailed.

Nlc should keep its opinions to itself as it does not speak for the masses.
This is another of their drain pipe to gain popularity for its new executives.
Frm the days to oshomole till 2day it remains a semi political party where they even fight over union elections.
A scam of pretence by a body to show it cares.
Mr peter esele has joined oshomole in official politics to contest edo 2016.

The majority of nigerians as reflected in 2015 election remain resolute, confident and sure of Pmb policies, sincerity intentions for nigeria, which brought him to power.
A mere protest for days on the street by a bunch of attention seekers is not an issue to any govt.
Where has ur jamborees for 16yrs gotten us to, if not the fraudulent means u use in settling back with the past govtments that earns u billions

As much as many of you may not like to hear it, the tariff increases are absolutely necessary if Nigeria is to ever enjoy reliable power generation. It costs money to import power-generating equipment and foreign expertise, it costs money to buy fuel, and it costs money to improve the power distribution infrastructure. The discos were already failing to cover their costs before the real value of the Naira started to weaken, which is why they couldn't reliably distribute even the meager 4,500MW that the gencos made available. Unless they can cover their costs and make a profit, why even bother staying in business?

Instead of the NLC complaining about the tariff increases, they'd be better off demanding for metered billing instead. No sensible person disputes that people should only be charged for the power they have actually received.

Is the problem of poor electricity due to low tarrif charge? Some things are just too sensitive n should ve treated carefully. U ve not reduced the car allowances or wardrobe allowance if senators and house members to buffer for money to finance other sector like electricity, the only thing that affects the masses directly, u want to know increase. Haba!

LATER THEY WILL COME UP WITH ANOTHER STORY THAT'S HOW THEY WILL BE BETRAYING NIGERIANS. NLC HAS FAILED IN TIME PAST, AND I DON'T SEE ANY DIFFERENCE NOW
Re: New Electricity Tariff: Buhari May Face 1st Labour Showdown As NLC,TUC Spit Fire by Nobody: 1:44pm On Jan 30, 2016
i think we lump things together too much in this country and end up muddling up everything with little results to show for our efforts. our demand should be very clear, which are

1. supply prepaid meters so that consumers pay for what they consume

2. agitate for a reduction or resist an increment in tariff IF/WHEN there are no justification for the present price of a unit of energy or a proposed increment

3. Agitate for improved power supply both in QUANTITY and QUALITY

my point is these three items are actually independent of each other.

a. when someones says they should not increase tariff if prepaid meters are not supplied, then i will quickly ask, so they can increase tariff arbitrarily just because you have a meter? of course not! you might end up not being able to pay for the energy you need.

b. some other person says tariff should not be increased after all power supply is still poor. same question in item (a) applies as well.

my take on this issue is that the FG should compel the DISCOs to give EVERY consumer a prepaid meter. increase the tariff such that the discos can make profit and then subsidise the tariff for consumers to a value an average Nigerian can pay. power consumption is something that can easily be monitored hence corruption in the energy consumption subsidy can be managed to the barest minimum.

Disclaimer.

I'm not here to book space, neither am I here to comment.

But I have something to say!

The people making these laws aren't part of the law. It has no effect on them.

Nigeria isn't for Nigerians, but for the aliens called polimagicians.

A country where recycling resources(politicians) is a norm. And this is the problem with Africa: recycling! Check it, most African presidents are recycled. Pls what has happened to invention?

We import everything so things are high in price. I hope one day we will not import our president.
