HELP!!! He Wants To Quit His Job by Iamhumble: 1:26pm On Feb 02, 2016
Hi Nairalanders,

Pls kindly advise an intimate friend of mine. He wants to quit his job...

Not that he has got a better offer o. But he feels it is his inability to quit that has enslaved him to his current job.

These are his reasons for his decision to quit:

1. at his current job he is underpaid.... a peanut that hardly sustains him....as a result even nearly 30 he's unable to keep a girlfriend....no cash to spend!

2. the job neither adds value to him as a person nor to his career as any interview he attends he's told that he's not fit cos he lacks experience in the field for which he has passion and to which he had applied
3. he's scared that he's spent a year plus on his job now and might spend more with nothing to show for it in savings or benefits as the pay is peanuts although he works his ass off, of course being a hard working person
4. he feels his talents and ambitions are looking unreal each day as he is not getting younger even though his dream was to marry early.

If you care to know, my friend works part time.

I would appreciate your sincere comments. Who knows, you might change not only his situation but also that of many in his shoes.

Thanks.

Not a wise decision
Being underpaid is a good reason to look for a better job, not quit the little he already has, in which case he'll then have zero pay. Quitting & sitting at home will neither provide a better experience nor add value to his career except he has something to do.
He can decide to spread his tentacles wide in search for a better job by telling all his friend to help him look for, or, since his current job is part-time, volunteer to work at no pay in a place that will give him experience in line with his career goals.

Thanks man. But he thinks it's because he's still at the job that he's unable to fervently commit in energy and time his job search struggle.

Thanks anyway. more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If your friend actually knows that his worth and value in comparism to what he earns is nothing to write home about, then he shouldn't settle for less. Let him sit down and talk with his boss or even notify them that he wants to leave on grounds that he is facing challenges from the current job, I can bet you that they will do everything possible to make him stay either by increasing his salary or otherwise. But first, let him be sure that he adds value to the company.
You will only settle for less if you ain't sure of yourself and who is backing you.

Thanks man. You have made a valid point. However, what if we look at his case as cited above: his current job though PT allows him not enough time to go in search of more opportunities.

Hmmm. Spot on bro. Everything you have suggested, all he had done. But this he got in response: we cannot do beyond our power. We shall be glad to do that when have the power to.

I tell you: God is my witness, my friend, a degree holder from one of Nigeria's best universities, is very dedicated to his work and stands out among his peers. To this fact even his boss had once testified. I can say this because I've known him all my life!

Thanks anyway for your contribution. It is invaluable!

where does he want to quit to? to go and sell groundnut abi

He should quit only if he has someone to take care of him while he searches for a Job in this Overcrowded Labour market otherwise, I'ld advice him to Glue his Black @ss to his office chair.

Many ppl die in silence and kill their morale all in d name of keeping a job that is demeaning. Do not let anyone make u feel inferior to yourself. If you're not enjoying ur job, take a walk and look some place else. Otherwise employers will take u for granted

Hmmm...wise question there, DonUjay. And the thought-provoking clause: "if he has someone to take care of him...'

Sighs.

Thanks man.

True bro, and his concern, I should say, is not that he's taken for granted --God knows if a large Chunk of unemployed Nigerian graduates aren't being taken for granted on a daily basis! But he is rather disturbed by the fact that his part time status at his job is even an impediment in securing a full time position on the field, for in all his interview experience with the same position as his current job he is screened out, not because he has part time written on his CV (of course he wouldn't do that) but because he is tested on what he is not currently doing on the job since he is only working part time.

That, my friend, is exactly his worry: he feels neither here nor there.

So base on this little expatiation, what do you think?

Thanks for your suggestions.

The answer is glaring already, take sometime off and develop yourself rather than remain stagnant with no future or respite in sight

what is your friend's definition of underpayment... I am asking because a colleague of mine used to earn $4700 a month and he feel the whole world was against him... like he earned the worst salary in the world... mind you he has no wife, no kid etc I was tempted to ask him one day what he does with his money....

So the definition of underpayment is necessary here. besides, it is better that something gets into your account than nothing.....if he doesn't like the pay package, she should do it in a smart way. not quitting when he has no other job alternative....

Oh my! $4700! Wish you knew how much that is converted to Naira: that's a million plus! And per month, here in Nigeria? And then complains? Hell, of course, NO! By the way, do you know that here in Nigeria, graduates are being paid as ridiculously low as N20,000 even for working full-time?

It's okay, Richy4. Thanks for your contribution.

hmmm....he really need to look elsewhere...no good pay, no relevant experience....no time....no confidence....I was once in his shoes, let him quit before it's too late. He will be better off starting up a business while looking for another job before it becomes too late. Nigeria, killing the future and talent of her ambitious youth, sighs cry

He should forget spending for a girl or savings first. What is important is, does d job put food on his table? Hope he doesn't borrow to get to work? A bird @hand worth million in d bush. He can only quit if d job doesn't add any value to him, bn underpaid @work is better than doing nothing.

Your friend should get better training that'll enhance his skills or fresh skills that will be marketable.

He should forget anything called girlfriend until he can cater for himself.

The most pretty girlfriends of this world will come asking after the successful man

That's it.

Incidentally, a fwend of mine wif d same travail n experience quits his job 2dae on d grounds dat he's bn massively enslaved n obsequiously bethralled wif indifference, although he has a parent dat tks care of him n his was a fulltym job.

Lookn at all listed reasons, I wld hv strongly advised dat he quits d job, had it bn d job was full tym n also if he's stayn wif guardian. But snc d job is a part tym job n I guess he's d one sponsoring himself, I wld recommend dat he continues wif d job n try applying 2 other places (jobs) he feels he has penchant 4..hopely, one dae, "im water go boil''..he who laffs last, laff best...

Cut your coat according to your cloth.
This proverb advises to cut and stitch the coat
according to the cloth available in hand also
warns that the size of the coat should not exceed the piece of the cloth in hand. Or else the coat will be unfit to wear or the cloth will become wasted, being not able to make a wearable cast.
It is necessary for everyone to make a proper plan before one begins to put any task into practice. A person who spends more than his income will soon fall into trouble.
He has to face the financial problems and hardships and thereby mental agony. So this proverb instructs to live within our means and resources. Those who do not know to make both ends meet would suffer much and
their lives would become miserable. Thus
harmony and proportion are very much essentials for income and expenditure.
Some people are showy in life in order to make
others to think that they are sophisticated and
rich. Seeing others being rich and great one
should not imagine oneself like them. One must
build a castle on the ground… not in the air…
with a strong foundation…that too within his
means and ability so as it should stand last long.
When building is constructed the base must be
very strong to bear the weight of the whole
building. If one does something without knowing his limitation he will soon repent his action.
If a person spends more than one’s income, he will have fall in some or the other peril. So this
proverb we should spend money according to our income and resources.

Instead of always trying to fix things, realize you deserve better. Stop waiting for a change & make a change.
Don't allow yourself to be stuck in a situation you no longer want to be in, do what you have to do in order to be happy.

He works part time !!!! that gives you at least " the other part time" to look for something better or improve yourself or get another part time job or whatever the heck you wish

You are lazy, unserious and definitely not underpaid as i suspect you get what you deserve giving that you dont put in the required effort at work

move over for serious minded ppl jor
