LAGOS—NIGERIA Labour Congress, NLC, and its Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, alongside civil society allies, yesterday declared a nationwide protest for Monday, February 8, against the hike in electricity tariff by government, in spite of a subsisting court order and non-improvement in power supply.

During the planned protest, labour and its allies said all offices of the Distribution Companies, DISCOs; Generation Companies, GENCOs, nationwide and the office of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Agency, NERC, would be picketed.Electricity-new

Giving reasons for the protest, labour said: “The due process in the extant laws for such increment was not followed in consonance with section 76 of the Power Sector Reform Act, 2005.

“There has been no significant improvement in service delivery. Moreover, the fact is that most consumers are not metered in accordance with the signed privatization Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, of November 1, 2013, which stipulates that within 18 months gestation period, all consumers are to be metered.

“There is a subsisting Court Order dated May 28, 2015, by Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, in the case of Toluwani Yemi-Adebiyi versus NERC & Orders, that there shall be no further increment until the determination of the substantive suit. The increment at this time negates the present biting and prevailing economic recession vis-a-vis an attempt to further impoverish the poor masses.”

In a statement signed by Mr. Ayuba Wabba, factional President of NLC, labour decried what it described as the 45 per cent increase in the electricity tariff as announced by NERC.

According to the statement, the protest “is a nation-wide protest, meaning that the 36 states of the federation, including Abuja, will be involved in this action. Our members have been sufficiently mobilized and are ready to go. If you are an electricity consumer and you are not happy with the bills electricity companies serve you every month, you are invited to join this protest rally.

“The Abuja rally will start at Labour House, Central Business District at 8.00am before moving to the NERC head office at Adamawa Plaza, Plot 1099, First Avenue, Off Shehu Shagari Way, Central Business District. From the NERC office, the rally will roll to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company at Zone 4. The rally will mobilise from there to the National Assembly.

“This protest rally has become necessary after all effort to make NERC shelve the idea of increase failed. Indeed, rather than see reason with Nigerians, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing has been advancing spurious arguments in justification.”

The Government is governing the people and not governing itself for whatever reason. Babatunde Fashola should stop provoking the already very stressed Nigerians, the labour movements and the hyper inflation in the country. He should get subsidy to run his business from the returned Abacha loot.

This is a government that has not invested a dime in the power sector
This is a government that does not have a clear economic direction nor a power sector roadmap of its own
But their first instinct is to inflict more hardship on the masses by increasing tariff on a sector they have done nothing on

What happens to first strengthening the regulatory agencies towards overseeing the DISCOs?
What happens to ensuring that every home has prepaid meters first?
What happens to increasing the power supply first to justify the need for tariff increase?
Why cant the govt subsidize the power sector instead of petroleum products?
The criminal and fraudulent excesses in the 2016 budget (website update, double dip zungeru projects, Presidential feeding and BMW car fleets and many other unnecessary luxuries) running into hundreds of billions will go along way in subsidizing the power sector for the next four years.

Buhari's govt is fraud and must be resisted as much as possible.

I wish them success!
Most Nigerian houses are yet to be meter, all what the government is doing to look side way from unmetered house and those that by-pass the meters. Then put the pressure on those paying actual meter readings.

After paying stamp duty, account mtc charge, 'Nepa' bill, effect of USD:NGN, high cost of diesel, workers/businesses will be left wil nothing to enjoy life.

Hike in prices everywhere. Even when people can barely feed thrice daily. I wonder where we are headed.

Whenever our electricity bill comes I always feel like slapping the ''Nepa Man''. Charging exhorbitant tarriff for giving us the light only twice a year :-/

Paying for what we don't get doesn't make any economic sense to us no matter how they try to coat it.

If we have to pay for capital expenditure, we can as well be equity holders in the firm.

So why then was power privatised if at the end we are the ones that will fund development in the sector. How will these payments be measured and deducted from future bills?

If they should go ahead with this, They should first of all try and fix the metered billing problem nationwide before they implement this. We then know there is am increase in tariff, but we are paying for what we consume. This will force the companies to improve supply in order to get more income. The protesters then should ask for 100% metering not scrapping the policy.

I understand what you are saying but you also need to understand that the country is broke. There is no other way to pay for anything other than through taxation. Nigeria's leaders should have been doing this decades ago instead of depending on oil. This is how countries like England, Germany, Switzerland, etc have survived and become great. The only problem i see with taxation in Nigeria is corruption. Corruption was easy in the past because Nigerians did not question it due to the fact that oil was the only source of income. Nigerians did not really feel the pain because the money stolen did not come from their pockets. It came from the land, specifically, Niger Delta. It's going to be a different story from now on.

Direct your anger elsewhere ,this is the best step except you want the government to cancel the flawed privatization of power sector by the last administration. These people bought over the discos yet the past government was giving them money , is that logical. The past government allowed the discos to charge a fraudulent fixes charge that ensures the discos get money for not providing electicity. The fixed charge is abolished now you are still shouting.
