Good to know that you are a martial artist.

I became interested in your post when I saw KUNG FU. If I may ask, what style of Kungfu do you practice. Where you trained in Abuja or elsewhere? Who was your Kungfu coach?

Don't be embarrassed because I am a Wushu Kung fu Coach. Although I do it for leisure. I specialize in Sanshou or Sanda (i.e. Kungfu Kick-boxing) and Changquan (Long Fist). I am a product of the famous Iron-Man Shaolin Kungfu Academy in Lagos.

I trained kung fu in Ilorin. My Kung fu coach is Black Master, I also trained kick boxing under him. But I'm more of a Tkd person I went into other martial arts to be more dynamic. Never fought in a kung fu competition, but I've fought competition in kick boxing and taekwondo(several). But no more competitions again, strictly traditional tkd & self defence......

MY FRIEND YOU ARE WRONG, MUAY THAI IS EFFECTIVE IN THE RING BUT WILL REQUIRE MODIFICATIONS TO WORK VERY WELL ON THE STREETS.

YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER THE FACT THAT ON THE STREETS THE GROUND WILL NOT ALWAYS BE AS SMOOTH AS IN THE RING OR GYM, THE ATTACK MAY NOT ALWAYS FOLLOW THE ANGLE YOU ARE TRAINED TO RESPOND TO, AND YOU MAY HAVE TO FIGHT MULTIPLE ASSAILANTS.

I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT I'M NOT TAKING SIDES WITH ANY STYLE HERE, BUT MY JOB REQUIRES HIGH LEVELS OF KNOWLEDGE IN SELF PROTECTION SKILLS OF WHICH MARTIAL ARTS OR COMBATIVES IS ONE OF SAID SKILLS.

AS A RESULT I'VE DEVELOPED A KEEN MIND AND EYE FOR EVERYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH HAND TO HAND COMBAT.

QUOTE ME IF YOU'D LIKE TO DISCUSS MORE ON THE SUBJECT.

THANKS.

Actually you are wrong. The closest martial arts to real life street fights are; boxing, MMA and Muay Thai. If you are proficient in them you need very little modifications for actually fighting on the street.

By the way, MMA borrows a lot of techniques from Muay Thai (Knee strikes, Clinch fighting, elbow strikes, cut kicks and signature round house body kicks)

Check Youtube for a real life fight "Supermarket clerk beats up 3 thieves". A sri Lankan MMA fighter using Muay Thai in street fighting.

SELF PROTECTION IS ALL ABOUT: PRECISE ECONOMIC MOVEMENTS + THE "KILL IF YOU HAVE TO, OR ESCAPE IF YOU CAN MENTALITY", MUAY THAI NEEDS MODIFICATIONS TO WORK IN THE STREETS, FORGET YOUTUBE, EVEN THE MILITARY IN THAILAND USE A HIGHLY MODIFIED AND HYBRIDIZED VERSION OF MUAY THAI CALLED "LERDRIT", I'VE ALWAYS SAID; IF YOU WANT TO TEST THE EFFICACY OF YOUR TRAINING, FIRST OFFEND AND FIGHT A CHARGING BOLEKAJA CONDUCTOR.

I FORGOT TO ADD, THE GOAL IN ANY PHYSICAL ALTERCATION IS TO CLOSE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR AGRESSOR AND DESTROY/ELIMINATE THE THREAT QUICKLY THEN GET OUT OF THE PLACE QUICKLY.

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT MUAY THAI CLINCHES, IMAGINE A SITUATION WHERE YOU PUT AN ATTACKER IN A CLINCH ONLY FOR HIS FRIENDS TO COME OUT FROM THE CORNERS AND TAKE YOU DOWN, MANY COMBAT SPORTS ATHLETES WILL GET INJURED OR LOSE THEIR LIVES IF THEY ENTER A STREET FIGHT WITH THAT "COMPETTION MENTALITY", I'VE HAD TO FIGHT MY WAY OUT MANY TIMES, ITS NOT PRETTY.
