Exactly how much time did respective ministers need to scrutinise the budgets of their ministries and identity as well as correct loopholes? What is d meaning of not having enough time? Unless they are all incompetent with grossly poor comprehension skills otherwise even the most cursory of glances will immediately throw up obvious problems like identical sums proposed for different line items repetitively!

Buhari, unless he admits he's unfit, should have been able to study the state house budget at least even if not the entire document. That way he'd have been able to query the purpose of state house rent and exotic wild life for the Presidency for instance.

These attempts at passing the buck will not work. He and his saintly ministers have been caught in blatant attempts at theft and embezzlement, nothing more or less. It is an indictment which they must honorably admit and work to make sure it is properly dealt with.

Exactly my opinion. We don't have time to be dwelling on remorse and excuses. The budget should be withdrawn and a new one crafted in a month!!

This is no budget at all!! Whole thing looks totally fvcked up.

My boss, can you accept your general manager not reading the budget his various departments put together before coming to defend it in your office? I know you won't accept that as an astute entrepreneur. Governance is serious business.

Back before 2012, I attacked everything called PDP. We all needed some shift from the normal but I gave up when I saw established criminals jump ships to the APC and started blaming the PDP.

GEJ wasn't the best at all...but in comparison with PMB, Haba. .....As a people we are in a huge mess. PMB is already scheming for 2019.....

Naira will most likely hit 500/$ before the year ends.

He's scheming to leave abi? undecided

This government is confused. For real angry

There's no time for the expression of remorse, the damage is already done.

Baba, address the nation and withdraw that document now or watch all the hopes of getting it right in Nigeria unravel before your eyes.

A stitch in time saves nine.

My brother, PMB addressing the entire nation over this unacceptable show of corruption would have been the most suitable thing to do. Leaders the world over makes mistakes and they own up to their mistakes and reassures their people by addressing them....but that won't happen here.....Instead what we have here is excuses and more excuses.

It took the national assembly and citizens just a few days to start spotting the multitude of errors.

A finance ministry manned by competent people should have spotted these errors in a matter of hours.

Yet again Kemi Adeosun the incompetent, is displaying her stupidity. Of course the Mumu at Aso did not help matters by appointing his ministers months after his inauguration and being a dunce himself.

What are we actually calling errors in the budget?
What we see in that budget is fraud. A well co-ordinated fraud being put in place to fleece the nation of her resources. The noise from the populace concerning the budget made those ministers disown their budget. They all knew those figures where in that budget.

Don't foreclose the possibility of that happening just yet. Perhaps they are weighing their options to see how best to address this most embarrassing situation.

Nevertheless, whatever options they are weighing must be accompanied with an apology, taking absolute responsibility and a reassurance that what is gonna be made available next would reflect the economic mood of the nation- there must be visible and drastic cut in the cost of running the executive and the legislature.

Anything short is that is totally unacceptable.

Unfortunately for you, Iweala is held in high esteem by the international community and in fact landed two juicy positions on leaving the government.

Kemi Adeosun's first budget as a minister has turned out to be the most fraud-ridden document ever put together by any government of Nigeria.
Yemi Osibanjo who happens to be the chairman of the Nigerian economic team made sure to sort out some funds for some book he wants to write, to the detriment of very important cash-strapped emergencies of the nation.

whatever your warped thought process is, the ministers have a job to do, they all clocked 3 months on seat today, the first disaster would have been if this budget draft became an act with its many errors, but the worst disaster is an unimplemented budget. I rember the capital exp of the 2014 budget was less than 40% implemented under your god ngozi, I can recall vividly that history. I like all the ruckus generated over the 2016 budget, it increases the likelihood of its near perfect implementation. The real story that will be more important at the end of this year is the extent of budget implementation.

This is the time for Nigerians to pay more attention to the positive impact of the current happenings in the NASS defence budget than focus on unnecessary technicalities and use of English.

For the first time in 16years, the executive led by PMB have refused to defend inflation of Budget that some government officials and civil servants would have easily stole. The current rejection of some huge figures by various ministers is a clear reflection of president Buhari anti-corruption stand. It is very difficult to indict yourself on a document you signed. it takes courage, sincerity and high level integrity to do that. We must commend president Buhari for that. For Buhari to openly indict himself in public when he can easily make a deal with the senate president by compromising the trust the people place on him like it was done in the past just to cover a little "embarrassment" is very commendable.

We need to tell ourselves the truth. Most of the items in the Budget that are rejected today by Buhari administration, are items that have be existing in the Budget for the last 3 or more years. The items have been defended in the past without any scrutiny by the National Assembly because in the past corruption was worship.

I know some people will argue that PMB is to be blame for the current embarrassment. Yes I agree that the Budget is his responsibility. However we must as well tell ourselves the truth that there is no way PMB would have read all the 1000 page documents. No president in the world does that. The truth is that the civil servants who made the budget estimate did it base on previous template and mindset in the past. They did not fully understand the change agenda of PMB. Hopefully by 2017 budget, we will have less of this misunderstanding between PMB stand and the civil servants interpretation of his stand. Some people will argue why use a template from a previous government you condemn. We must be sincere and know that change is gradual and takes time. The change agenda is a 4year to 8year agenda. So everything cannot be changed in months.

We must also know that the reason the National Assembly is doing more critical work in this budget rather than rubber stamping it as they use to do in the past is because of Buhari anti-corruption stand. If Buhari was sharing Ghana must go to the senate like it use to be in the past, there will be less noise coming from the National Assembly.

I work in a multinational company. I have not met any boss who reads 100 page documents prepared by me or any other of his staff page to page. Some of us here on nairaland are bosses too. For that we can forgive PMB for poor oversight for a document of about 1000 pages.

I am not saying this Budget and the process are perfect. But what I am clearly saying is that, this Budget and National Assembly scrutiny of the Budget, and ministers open rejection of possible inflation is the best Nigeria has had in the last 16 years. This is a major progress every sincere and objective Nigerian who loves the progress of this country should applaud. Because this new development is in the best interest of the country.

I am very happy with current noise about the Budget. This is a clear sign that Change has come. And change has come to stay.
Change is always difficult. Change usually face a lot of resistance and rough path. This Budget is actually a BUDGET OF CHANGE.

Spot on...well spoken.. cool

If Buhari was sharing Ghana must go to the senate like it use to be in the past, there will be less noise coming from the National Assembly.

sorry sir dat budget had passed first reading and successfully scaled through without hitches in d national assembly and was at d second reading if not for vigilant eyes of some journalist who reevaluated d budget and gave a break down of it. Its painful dat PMB has failed us but we must say d truth no matter whose ox is gored.
