President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Tijjani Abdullahi as the new Director-General in charge of the Budget Office of the Federation.

The President also approved the appointment of Ben Akabueze as the Special Adviser on Planning to the Minister of Budget and National Planning.

Mr. Abdullahi, a fellow of the Certified National Accountants of Nigeria, and a banker of repute with experience in managing public finance, will replace the current Director-General (Budget), Yahaya Gusau.

Mr. Gusau, who replaced Bright Okogu, who completed two terms of office, was appointed to the office on August 18, 2015, for a term of four years that could have been renewable for another four years.

But he has now been sacked following the widespread irregularities detected in the 2016 budget presently under consideration by the National Assembly.

Presidency sources told PREMIUM TIMES Mr. Buhari believed that the sacked DG failed to effectively deliver on his mandate.

The new Director-General (Budget) is expected to work with the Minister of Budget and National Planning to efficiently deliver on the mandates of the Budget Office of the Federation, a statement by the presidency said.

Mr Akabueze, who is the immediate past Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State, has worked in senior management positions in Citi Bank, Fidelity Bank, United Bank for Africa, NAL Merchant Bank, Sterling Bank and BIA Consulting Limited, among others.

He is Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers; Fellow, Institute of Credit Administrators and Honorary Fellow, Chartered Institute of Bankers.

This is how to be presidential! If your subject can not take adequate care of his/her responsibilities you show him/her the way out irrespective of your ties.
Buhari's action is a statement of intent about his mission.

The president should immediately sack the DG budget office and the minister of Budget and national planning. They have both failed the president. The massive fraud in the budget was perpetrated in the budget office and the leadership should be made to pay for it.

Going forward, the president needs to appoint a very knowledgeable and trusted management or public accountant as his special assistant on budget. The SA budget and his team will help the president review the budget before it is presented to FEC for approval. If due diligence was carried out on this budget after it was compiled by the budget office, all this paddling, inflation and errors would have been detected and the president would have been spared of this national embarrassment.

Don't be fooled by Buhari's theatrics and grandstanding. The incompetent cattle-rustler is only trying to save face by scape-goating someone else. Did he not append his signature on that fraudulent document before presenting it to the National Assembly? Did you Zombies not hail the said budget of corruption as the best thing that happened to Nigeria since independence?
