Lagos-kano Rail To Generate 250,000 Jobs – Amaechi by centvin008(op): 10:26pm On Feb 19, 2016
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, said on Friday that the Lagos-Kano Rail project would be completed in the next two years.
Amaechi, who said this while inspecting the Abuja-Kaduna rail project in Kaduna, added that, it would generate employment for 250,000 Nigerians.
He said the ongoing rail project from Lagos-Kano and Lagos-Calabar would generate more employment than the Abuja-Kaduna rail modernisation project.
He further stated that a training institute would be established by the Chinese company to train Nigerians on operations, maintenance and communication.
“For the Lagos-Kano and Lagos-Calabar rail project, we expect to generate like 250,000 employment opportunities both formal and informal.
“We are negotiating with General Electric in America to construct a narrow gauge from Lagos to Kano and they cannot run that without training Nigerians.
“If the communication system goes down how do we revive it, so they would also teach Nigerians how to maintain it.
“If we want to replace it, how do we replace it, so the key thing is transfer of technology and that will be the focus of the ministry.”
He said government would ensure that the rail service was affordable for the masses.

First to comment since I joined Nairaland in 2014. So it's this easy!
Nothing special sha,but Amaechi is a huge joke. He should give his 250,000 jobs to be created to his children and generations yet unborn.

Pls wait.....
I watched with disgust on NTA this week how our so called Hon minister of works, Mr Fashola commissioned an old locomotive which was taking its first run from Kaduna to Abuja and which I believe had since in the early 80s been dumped by developed countries.
Is Nigeria that poor or our leaders are shortsighted to invest in those old rags.
Are we not ripe for an express train?

A tad ambitious in my opinion, although the Ministry of Railways in India which also run the rail services employ about 1 million people.

Why are you doubting it? Think about the distance(s) the rail track will cover for the construction companies. Not to mention after the project is completed, the creation of jobs and trade/commerce it will bring forth.

Railway transportation is one of the highest job creation venue in all the western world.

Bobbyjay dear, I understand. But, let's start believing gradually, and with time if they fail to deliver we will use all their words against them to push them out. No party is indispensable in nigeria now.

........but, the thought of mentioning General Electric of America? Hummmm! God should help us so that all the good things should come to be fulfilled in Nigeria soon too oooo.

what the hell is narrow gauge? why go for cheap stuff? This country is annoying. Why not spend the extra money and build a standard gauge rather than spending much more money in future to upgrade the narrow gauge? The North gets a standard gauge while the south gets a narrow gauge.
