TonyeBarcanista:Barcanista isn't ready to see things differently. Oil has everything to do with Naira value loss. CBN did not try to totally prevent circulation of $ it simply stop augmenting dollar value for importers. Any body who has dollar and wants Naira should simply approch any of the many importers and do business with them. Buhari/Emefiele approach is very OK. |

TonyeBarcanista:you started this arguement urself, by laying the whole blame on buhari and CBN governor which is very wrong, Everybody under APC and PDP are to be blamed equally. bt majority of the blame should go to the former ruling party for failing to plan for the future appropriately, you cant compare the amount of foreign reserve left behind by OBASANJO(over $49bilion to the amount JONATHAN($30 billion) left behind for buhari. so i wonder why do u blame buhari. |

Elosky20:Meanwhile, layer on top that Jonathan produced more oil (militancy under OBJ, ended under Yar'adua), and sold the more oil at even higher prices than OBJ. GEJ should be flogged to be honest and this is not a blame game. It is the pain of a Nigerian that is hurting from the wasted opportunity we had. |

@ TonyeBarcanista ... Since you are adamant about Putting the blame on Buhari & Emefiele, you are free to, cool if that's what suits you but I just need you to indulge me & answer two question... 1.How long can we keep financing out import dependent lifestyle perpetually without judgement day finally dawning on us as a nation?? 2. Who & what will you direct the blame for Saudi, UAE, Venezuela, Angola etc current economic woes to ? LRNZH ... My takeaway from this debate is that the IB is truly a "Lucky" fellow, he created a giant & slippery clusterbleep & got out just in time before its implosion... If the oil price decline had started in July 2013 & not 2014, OP here wouldn't be penning this rumination of his selective thought process. |

modath:With his intellect? the IB is the luckiest fellow that I have ever witnessed. Things just move smoothly for him. The oil price and its impact is not dictated by anybody. I remember in 2015 when the FG kept warning us that 2016 will be a tough year and many Nigerians have forgotten already including OP. |

TonyeBarcanista:did u even read the article at all? The third paragragh from the end clearly states that it was a temporary measure. Same greedy bankers who cried out while rejoice at the policy to help them stimulate reduction Naira they are now secretly accepting dollars at N198.5 and selling at N370+. Try paying some Dollar out of your dollar linked account and try paying dollar into it and observe the reaction. I am talking reality here not some political tone sounded by some greedy bankers |

I've learnt a lot tonight. Guys have murdered Barca on his thread depicting his trademark jaundiced position on National issues.Kudos to all patriots on this thread for not allowing barca to misinform people on an issue he has little or no knowledge about. Barcanista is better off doing his political propaganda than dabbling into a big issue such as the economy. Oga Barca, don't embarrass yourself and your minions further. kindly eat the humble pie and surrender to the superior firepowers of the numerous commentators that already took you to the cleaners as per the issue at hand. I dare say that a smart SS1 Economics student would not agree with your jejune submissions here today. |

TonyeBarcanista:Mami! You don't know anything about Economics and Finance! You should have stayed in your lane rather than Straying into an unfamiliar Waters... Just take a look at they way, you conveniently left out the reason the Naira Jumped from 146 Naira to a dollar to 230 Naira @the black Market between January 2015 to May 2015(Jonathan Infamous tenure), all because you wanted to Blame Buhari and APC.... Second, You brought out the Comparison with Venezuela, but ran away when some people pointed out the Scary picture of its own economy due to the Oil glut... In Conclusion... Your thread is nothing but a failed attempt to impress the illiterate IPOB Youths roaming On Nairaland to give "LIKES" to any comment that mocks Buhari... |

They want you to grow naija but after about 70 years of "investing" on western education, scholarships, oversea trainings and politics, this is the best we could come up with? Its 2016 and they are not ready to do anything different from the status quo and they want you to proudly showcase your 'talent' and compete with the likes of South Korea and China? Why am I angry? I am angry because I need the damn Samsung galaxy S7, but the exchange rate has skyrocketed beyond redemption, whilst some folks telling me to grow a nonexistent naija content. We need to hold our leaders accountable. All politicians, dead and alive, must withdraw their wards overseas. Why can't they lead by example? GEJ's kids studied in Abuja, now Buhari says his doctors are abroad yet some of you people here spend your lifetimes defending these crooks just because someone's name sounds "incorruptible" LMAO! No more oversea shoppings and USA deliveries for celebrities, the rich, the average and the common man. No Nigerian politician must use a Samsung or Apple phone! Its either we adopt Opon imo, Bryte or we return to the 'Old Land line' (naija version). If you cannot drive Innoson, treck! Refuse to suffer alone! Refuse to die for a nonexistent local content! Abacha and Babaginda said same thing and their bank and pit accounts sporadically skyrocketed! In 2011, GEJ (PhD) imposed Zinox laptops for all F.G agencies, mind you, Zinox is a Naija brand of Laptop. He tried and still failed! What do you people now expect from one without NEPA certificate whose allies have in fact approved more Mercedes Benz, and they want you to drive Innoson to grow naija? ![]() |

modath:Why do you think he conceded without a fight? He had seen the storm coming and bailed.. @TonyeBarcanista Even if the CBN had devalued, or devalues the Naira, it will still continue to fall because of low supply. The Country earns dollars by selling oil which right now is almost a useless commodity, the CBN has a choice, flood the market with dollar and watch our reserves finish in about 3 months or ration the dollar and sell to those who are importing essential commodity. The Crash of the Naira Right now, speculators, and people importing things like shoes (41 items on the list) are the ones pushing the Dollar high, this will continue until they realise that the common man can't afford what they are selling, in which case they switch to a local supplier or go out of business. The Problem with Devaluing the Naira. Even if the CBN officially devalues the Naira today, the parallel market will still rise to about 3 times the official rate because devaluation doesn't solve the scarcity of dollars. If we were an exporting country, devaluation would have worked because things produced in Nigeria would cheaper (find out why China manipulates its currency). |

This is what Venezuela is dealing with. Naija is still in decent shape IMO "Venezuela's economy is in dire straits. Adding to failing economic policy by the government, the country gets nearly all of its export revenue from oil, of which the price has declined roughly 70% since 2014. Venezuela's foreign exchange reserves are dwindling fast, from $24.2 billion in February 2015 to $14.8 billion in November 2015, while inflation is said to be triple-digit and Credit Default Swap (CDS) data shows that traders see a 78% chance on default, according Reuters. In an effort to avoid catastrophes, the BCV has a very strong motive to employ its official gold reserves." http://seekingalpha.com/article/3914536-venezuela-exported-36-tonnes-official-gold-reserves-switzerland-january |

TonyeBarcanista:If someone else had posted this argument, it would have been overlooked, but for a barcanista to make this submission, it is quite unfortunate. Between 2008 and 2009 february, oil prices crashed from its highest ever value of $147 to below $40. The only reason Nigeria and the Naira survived that disaster was because we had substantial savings; it cost a whooping sum of $20 billion dollars to rescue Nigeria from that crash. Within one year of Yaradua's reign, when oil prices reached an all time high? Yaradua was able to save about $20bn in the nation's foreign reserves, and this was the exact amount it cost Nigeria to get out of the oil crisis of 2008. Once again, I am indeed shocked that you of all people are not aware of this simple fact. With the oil price slump, all other major oil producers are also having a serious crisis which has affected their currencies. How you arrived at your conclusion that oil price does not affect currencies especially in a country which depends solely on oil for forex income is quite a mystery. Nigeria presently makes much less forex income due to the oil crash, but our taste and demand for foreign goods has not changed proportionately. This simply leads to a negative balance of trade with the demand for forex being higher than the current supply. Economics 101 tells me that when demand exceeds supply, the price goes up; hence the price of the dollars and pounds has shot up. |

TonyeBarcanista:That's coz we had $62 billion dollars in our reserves which got depleted to $45 billion to survive the slump. That slump was shorter than what we've been experiencing since 2014. |

Elosky20:Yes, I share your view greatly. OBJ built a massive reserve and ECA (Excess Crude Account), this was what bailed out Yaradua and GEJ when oil price fell sharply. @Tonyebarcanista, are you saying just that policy of dollar control by CBN is the major reason behind this sharp drop? It couldn't have been. If there had been a good foreign reserve, it would have been very useful in this hard time. Honestly, I don't envy PMB, Adeosun and Emefiele this time around. |

AZeD1:I made case for devaluation when all these started in 2015 and I still maintain that the best way to arrest incesant dollar circulation was introduction of control measures(like sane society does) and not express stoppage(which has never worked). That measure by CBN fast tracked the collapse of the Naira even before anything devaluation. |
