Good Evening Nairalanders. My mother just resigned from a Company due to personal reasons and she was hoping to start up a business of her own. She lacks entrepreneurship skills and Info so I told her my nairaland fam might help.
She has two business idea that she wants to realise,so I will appreciate if informed NLs can advise me in relation to these business's capital and profit,challenges: stress, time involved, because my mom isn't that young sha)...it's locations and all other economic related stuff:

((Un)) Porridge Meals-- In my own eyes oh...This one seems like a easy-to-start something and like I always say "Packaging is Key". I believe if the Porridge shop looks Mrs Biggs-ish...she'll probably get customers that buy without caring about the price of the meal but seems stressful for starters. Anyway, this business is the family favourite sha.

(Deux) Daycare Services--This one is less stressful but with lots of capital involved. She'll need a fan, and some kids stuff , mattresses etc. My mom has good customer relating skills so as to 'entice' the Mothers with their kids. Seems profitable, as I heard its charged 10k per kid some places.

So please guys which one of the two should we take under Advicement for a retired Mother Of Two?

1) Nigerians love their food. You can go wrong with food business provided the location is right.

2) Daycare business would require your mum to offer her services on credit and I don't think that is what you are looking for.

Food business will always be lucrative.
No matter how poor/rich you are you must always find something to eat. The only difference is the taste and quantity.

Anytin food will sell. Only if the environment is neat and with ur inputs about the packaging. But dont let the packaging affect the normal price ooo. Add lots of ponmo,fish,ede,and let it be a little bit pepperish. Thank me now or never .

Porridge business will be good for mummy,Day care is not dat easy,it is capital intensive and requires all your attention.No one will put there kids in an unconducive place. As the porridge business is a family business, she has an edge there already.

Food business is hot cake in Nigeria.

You are reasonable and rational. A family friend of ours wanted to start that business (daycare) in there rented apartment which was in a secluded area two years ago, I had to discourage her because if big boys should visit that place they might cart away people's children

Daycare is stressful my dear , I think the porridge business would be less stressful ,if well packaged, it 's gonna be unique business . daycare business has too many risk.

Duuude, if you are sure of a secure place, a daycare would be more profitble. The food business is over saturated. The thing is if she can really gain the trust of parents, before u know it she can open branches, establish branches close to big companies (chevron) where rich nursing mums can just pop in since its close by.....

She can innovate and make her daycare have cameras where parents can just login and see how their kids re doing, the possibilities are endless before u know it she has a business she can hand over to you her children.

She can create an agency where she would train nannies to be hired, she would collect the money nd pay the nannies salaries the same way security outfits do theirs... Can u see how big it could get??

Porridge on the other hand is bleh cos most people dont eat such food outside nd its like buying yellow beans.

I would say your mom go for the food business, running a day care is way stressful as you have to be on the move trying to pamper every kid till the parents come to pick the last kid but in the case of the food business, all the major stress are for cooking and she get to relax through the rest of the day. She used to work with a company you say...she can advertise and persuade her colleagues to drop by to try out her delicacy,
Packaging: don't you cheap takeaway pack, install bug zapper, if she can't afford AC at the moment endeavor to install heat expeller and install big size fan. If you need anymore ideas, you sure know how to reach back.

In other news I have a two industrial size refrigerator(the kind you find in shoprite) I just offloaded from my container at a very affordable price, you can package the eatery with this instead of the conventional local eatery. Bellow are the pics.

First of all , porridge is generally not a delicacy that'll appeal to many . You have to go extra mile in order to arouse the appetites of the eaters .

Daycare . Hmmmmm. Your mum has to be patient to handle the rate at which she changes diapers . Children can shyte even when they don't feel like shyting. They'll force it out somehow while looking at the caretaker with a suppressed laughter .


In terms of cost, daycare is way cheaper in the sense that she can use her home instead of renting an apartment . The only costly thing there is the pampers cause a child with a running stomach can finish one bundle in an hour . She's got a telly already . she'll buy some story books and toys.
