Why? It's mission accomplished, he has propped up Assad, which BTW was the main mission.

Yea, but I expected a push on Raqqa and/or Deiz Ezzor and any remaining major city. Agreed, ISIS and other terror groups have lost significant territory, fighters, income streams and Assad probably will seat tight for a little while longer but I expected that Russia would do more....
Oh well, I guess Putin knows better than we do.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu to start the withdrawal of forces from Syria starting Tuesday.
“I consider the objectives that have been set for the Defense Ministry to be generally accomplished. That is why I order to start withdrawal of the main part of our military group from the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic starting from tomorrow,” Putin said on Monday during a meeting with Shoigu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Moscow launched its anti-terror campaign in Syria on September 30 last year. Russia’s participation in the operation, according to a previous statement by Putin, has its basis in international law and has been conducted “in accordance with an official request from the president of the Syrian Arab Republic [Bashar Assad].”

The Russian Air Force has been carrying out airstrikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and other terrorist targets in the region, eliminating military equipment, communication centers, vehicles, arms and fuel depots.

At Moscow's initiative, a phone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Syria's President Bashar Assad was held on Monday evening, the Kremlin reported.

The two leaders agreed that the actions of Russia's Air Force in Syria have allowed them to "profoundly reverse the situation" in connection to fighting terrorists in the region, having "disorganized militants' infrastructure and inflicted fundamental damage upon them."

Definitely.

One clear thing is that Assad is not going any where, Putin just proved that. As for Raqqa and other provinces, Assad's military will take care of those ones. Putin is a chess master, he ras rolled Obama like Japanese sushi, achieved all he wants to achieve in Syria in six months, and is pulling out, if these do not connote tact and foresight I wonder what else does.

Just within six months ISIS and FSA have been beaten black and blue by the Russia's military might, and Assad's position is now stronger than ever. Yet some simpletons like vedaxcool and the shemal.e missy89, will be rolling over themselves with the fairy tales of how strong the U.S. Military is, When they can't even achieve in two years what Russia was able to achieve in six months in Syria.

Very true. I'm guessing he's thinking, "Why stay in Syria any longer when Assad's reign has been further guaranteed - and incur avoidable expenses to keep the troops there? Besides, the SAA should be able to finish off the rest."

And about what what achieved in 6 months by the RuAF, one of those geniuses was mouthing off trying to find fault in Russia taking almost six months to achieve its objectives. I responded that while the United States of Anarchy had a 13 month headstart, they actually allowed ISIS to gain territory right under their noses - and let's not forget those long convoys of smuggled oil that somehow didn't get mentioned or bombed until Russia stepped in.

What is the guarantee that Assad's forces would be able to secure the country for the meanwhile?
Hasty decision, Vlad.

A lot of positive to take home from this anyway:

1. Assad stays but for how long, we do not know. I don't trust the West to give up on its insatiable appetite for "regime change"

2. The rebels have been pegged back and we expect the SAA to slowly but surely finish the job.

3. The RuAF has used this as the most perfect, best drill possibly as it has presented it an opportunity to test its military capabilities and new weapons. With the discreet admission by the Hegemon of its surprise at Russia's ability, I'm thinking that they are now thinking long and hard about any machinations they may be dreaming up against Russia. Their best bet as far as I'm concerned is through using 5th elements within the Russian elite: the Khodorkovskys and co.

4. The backers and sponsors of ISIS and other terrorist groups were further exposed.

Like I said before, Putin knows best - definitely much more than all of us armchair analysts combined smiley

No no my friend be rest assured that Putn knows the best. Have confidence in the KGB master, winning is his hobby.

He has achieved all he wants to achieve. Let me tell you, Assad was loosing grounds initially not because of Isis, but because of the FSA, which were fully sponsored by the U.S., so having cut off the train and equip program of the CIA for the FSA I honestly think it is time for Putin to go home. Assad's military together with the Hezbollah can take out ISIS

And BTW pulling out does not mean Russia will have no say again in Syria, no no, they will still be playing big in Syrias military ops. You know, they can supply weapons and intelligence to the Assad's govt to carry on with his task of decimating ISiS. People like us (blessed with superior logic and foresight, and not like the idio.ts of vedaxcool and shema.le missy89) knew the game was over for FSA and ISIS Oon the 30th of Sept 2015, when Putin rolled in equipments into Syria.

I'm curious how much the bill will be that putin presents to assad. Nothing short of complete russian dominance of the syrian economy, no doubt. It's still early and all could fall apart but congrats to the Russkies for attacking all non-ISIS targets and propping up their little pet assad. I wonder how many chechen jihadis remain that russian did not kill because they were too busy not attacking ISIS.
Author- curious

Let's console ourselves with the fact that Russia killed a lot of civilians, destroyed infrastructure they used and allowed ISIS to fester thereby worsening the refugee crisis Europe is facing.

My good friend, I honestly don't know why you're being papranoia, why the doubt and fear? Hasn't Putin proven to be a master for you to keep doubting him? The thought of Assad leaving was only possible in the minds of dollop heads. How do you leverage Assad going when America is not even ready to commit to full military ops, for the fear that Russia will roll over their forces like meat pie.

Sometimes, I hate commenting on nairaland, because most people like vedaxcool think straight from their anus. How in the world was Assad going to leave in the first place? I remember when Putin first launched his attack in Syria, that shemal.e called missy89 was all over the place with her itchy finger writing that Putin will get bugged down in a matter of months and that nothing can ever bring back Assad's govt, well now she and her band of strange bed fellows are changing the narrative, telling us trite stories of how and why the Soviet Union collapsed.

Once again, just give it up for Putin, I tell you the world has not seen a politician so tactful and witty like Vladimir Putin!

And you think Putin is oblivious of that fact? To be honest it is pentagon that needs not to trust Putin and not the other way round. Putn has his intelligence on ground and he's still fully in charge of the situation in Syria. The parties meeting in Geneva have to decide and choose, either take the carrot from Assad to make peace and save Syria or the stick from ISIS to destroy the country and let the devils rule Syria.

a very tactical decision. when u achieve a military mission pull out before it wears ur military(art of war). that's why the u.s always fail in all their phony wars. remember Russia still has their naval ports and air base, so they can come back anytime they are needed, no need to remain in Syria, the Syrian army can takeover.

Putin has kept on outsmarting the u.s, am sure Washington wants Russia to stay in Syria longer which in turn takes away Russia's eye from the tricky game of NATO in Europe, but Putin understands that better. look at the way Putin has handled the Syrian issue with calm and tact, it would also be a shock to the u.s, as they expected Putin to be more aggressive. u have to give it to Putin.

Like Zoharariel, I agree as well. I think Putin is a brilliant strategist and tactician with no equal in the West.
By the way, this is probably a scale down rather than a full withdrawal.

Before you jump into conclusions such Putin may be throwing Assad under the Bus, or Putin couldn't take the heat and he's pulling out, read the full article, and pay attention to this particular statement :

"To control the observation of ceasefire agreements in the region, Moscow will keep its Khmeimim airbase in Latakia province and a base at the port of Tartous, Putin said.
In other words , Russian air force and Russian Navy will remain in Syria, and you know they will be still flying missions and monitor the air "to protect their assets"

I don't think they can do much. especially not now that the Arab League has outlawed them as a terrorist organization.

Its left for Assad tho.

Well let's agree to disagree. As for your list , you aren't saying anything new I have say to others but unlike you who legitimize civilians death when Russia is the murder and the reverse when otherwise I don't shy to call murder by what it is when perpetuated by any countries I have not need to cloth murderers in heroes robes.

Just "tekeluk" at the best rated comments below.

And as usual despite the demonization and the lies and the accusations, Putin doesn't seem to be able to do any bad in the eyes of the masses of the West. See below the reactions of Westerners to the news of the pullout. What a poor job these Western governments are doing in their failed propaganda efforts - despite all the resources at their disposal, despite the relentless demonization, despite it all! You gotta feel sorry for them

Putin's approval ratings is the best.
Putin still better than the rest.

Exactly! Knowing when to pull out is key lest you get bogged down for a long time like the Hegemon did in Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam.
Putin went into Syria with the clear objective to ...to stabilize the legitimate authority (Assad govebrment) and create the conditions for a political compromise" Oh, how the Putin-haters must be sh*tting in their pants that Putin has scored yet antithetical strategic victory over the clueless Hegemon.

Of course we "Putin bots" wanted more (Raqqa push, etc) but I guess we have to accept the initial objectives of the Russian intervention which has been more or less achieved.

There is a post from The Saker that I would like to share but this darn spam bot banned my original account! angry Will try again with this one
