The N50 charge is a law but this one is a guideline by the CBN. Buhari has no hand in this as the money goes to the banks and not the government But it will be unwise of the government to allow it to sail through not minding the independence of the CBN.
Seriously? You'll need to try harder my friend, @the bolded. The CBN governor is an appointee of who? Before you go ahead to say Buhari has no hand in the dollar ish, and the economic downturn we're facing cos those are responsibilities of the CBN and ministries of trade and finance, let me quickly agree with Lai Mohammed : "The economy is beyond Buhari's control ".
The failure of a leader.

What does the FG stand to gain by introducing these charges? On the quote you put up there, please do not believe everything you read on the internet or on the Nigerian newspapers. I read the transcript of that interview and I was not surprised that the journalist who wrote that piece was being sensational.

Oh! So because Nigerians didn't do anything about that preposterous 50 naira per deposit charge, now they are getting bolder?

What is this our country turning into under Boooooohari, the cow herding dullards dictatorship?

Soon they will charge N500 for stepping into the bank premises. Rubbish!

All charge, no change!

What is the economic agenda of this administration? The question is asked everyday and the response seems to be 'we dont give a damn'!

We are virtually in a recesssion - there are job losses, withdrawal of foreign funds, stagnated budget process, trips without traction etc.

Even the party structures have collapsed. There is no PDP or APC anywhere, just rulers and sole administrators. Governors are doing whatever they like, and that cuts accross at all levels.

This is not how to govern a nation!

Oil Minister has admitted it is CHEAPER to import petrol than to refine locally. I am not surprised at all. The COST of everything in the country is prohibitive, from land to water and to electricity.

The FG has put a nail on it by raising electricity tarriff. It is the most nonsense step in government in many years. It has taken cost of production beyond the roof and it is likely to commit the nation into perpetual IMPORTATION of just everything. That in itself will keep putting pressure on the Naira.

Incessant increases and NEW NEW charges will push us further into a vicious cycle.

Why dont we learn from the Dubais and Qatars of this world, who have dropped charges and lowered costs in order to attract investments? Even the US stimulates its economy all the time by looking for ways to lower costs of living and of production.

Why are all the ministers quiet? What is the plan? Where is the development blueprint?

All charges, no change. Let us re-think and not turn Nigeria into Siberia.

So much noise about how much to charge MTN! If you have all the money in the bank and have no plans on how you want to create MULTIPLIERS, then it leaves you worse off.

Think.

Think of how to bring down costs so that people can produce. Put the country to work and you'll be better off.

10% of 10 billion is better than 50% of 10 million. Is that not common sense?

To be honest, sometimes I ask what is wrong with Nigeria and its leaders. We will never develop

This is becoming unbecoming. Why all these incessant charges? And it is not as if the services provided by these banks are improving! Monthly maintenance fee for ATM on top of the 65 fee on 4th withdrawal. 50 per cheque leaflet! Anyway, I want to believe CBN Gov, Emefiele is only acting under the influence of his former colleagues as a Bank MD. He seems to be more interested in getting more money to the banks' purses than any other thing else!

In other words, you are saying, it hasn't been approved yet by the FG?

I believe that the central bank is finding ways to help banks increase their own revenue as the government has withdrawn its money from their accounts.

I won't be purposefully naive about this. As far as this news is out, I am quite sure the government has given some sort of approval...anyway we will see.

That is why it is good to have an ECONOMIST as a CBN governor than having a BANKER as the governor of CBN.

An ECONOMIST always think on how to improve the economy of the nation while a BANKER always think on how to improve the Income generated revenue of the banking Sector.

No, the N50 stamp duty is an act of the National assembly. The bank charges are similar to the electricity charges which the CBN imposes on bank so that they do not bill customers indiscriminately. The current proposal, if true, appear to be a way of trying to shore up bank revenues at the detriment of depositors. This, in my opinion, is wrong and should not be allowed to happen. They already have our money with them, if they cannot be creative to use that money to make more money then it is not the depositors fault.
