hello everyone. Please what is the difference between an institute and a university. Middlebury institute of international studies sent me an application fee waiver code to apply to either MA in Nonproliferation and terrorism studies or their MA in International policy and Development. The school is in Monterey California. I actually have passion for sustainable development, human rights and all. Really want to work with international NGO's like UN. Do you guys think these courses are marketable in the US? My undergraduate degree is in Mass Communication, should i rather go for my masters in Communication? How marketable is this course too. I really don't want to go waste my time with a course that wouldn't get me a good job. Abeg make una advice me .

Pls I am still waiting for a response to the above question o. I know we all busy, but pls, if you have anything input, please just contribute.

The course is not under STEM, secondly, related course that can make u work under UN is offered at Bridgeport . Global development and peace. I have been admitted and I have my I 20 now..

My plans is to enroll for first semester and transfer my unit to community college for courses under STEM..

I got partial scholarships in 3 of the 4 schools I applied to. No GA though, just awards. How can I possibly apply to other departments for a GA position while I'm still in Nigeria?

cc: GboyegaD, bigfrancis21, imperiouxx et al

You could check on the career page for non-teaching GA awards. It could be some offices like Graduate Student Office, Student Hostels as Community/Resident Advisor position amongst others.

Not sure but I don't think there's much difference. MIT, Caltech, etc call themselves institutes abi. Also going by wiki, the parent institution of your "institute" is Middlebury College, a very respectable school. Let's see what others say.

Why the craving for STEM? OPT?

You really cannot do direct comparison here. Many Nigerian students are shortchanged. Many lecturers need to be tutored on how to lead class, how to set and grade exams. There are things you shouldn't examine students on yet our naija lecturer go on to root them out for examination. Sometimes, students are tested on untaught areas. At the end, they are so strict with marking! [b]In US, if you failed, you are either dull or indolent but you can fail woefully in Nigeria while working very hard[\b].

On the flip side, naija students hardly grab concept of their subjects. They don't know the objective, aim and applicability of taught subjects. grin. they just read/cram to pass. For instant, don't be surprised if some final engineering students in mechanical do not know what is torque! But students are taught to learn and apply here in US. You leave university with a measurable knowledge. You can do!

Many of our Nigerians only get to know subject matter in the industries.

The bolded isn't the case many times. That one fails doesn't mean one is lazy because sometimes, things happen.

Because people with good results in STEM subjects are sought in the job market! smiley

Oh wow. I will check out the school. Are you going for the Global development and peace program? Also, how can someone with an social science background just transition into STEM, just like that! The VO's will think its just a strategy to get into the US system. I equally don't think the schools will offer me admission with no prior undergraduate STEM courses.

This is serious. So are you implying that people like me don't stand a chance of getting good jobs after graduating? I was thinking of pursuing a PHD, then get into lecturing. Heard they are paid well.

Yes they are under Middlebury College. That was why i even gave it a thought. Don't just want anything that will raise eyebrows in the interview. So needed to find out from gurus in the house and also on the course.

If you want to work with NGOs (most are health related), you should have a health background(like taken one or two courses). And you should apply for a program that falls under a STEM degree (at least to be marketable on the job market). I got admitted for Healthcare Mgt (a STEM degree), in Cal state LA(Really Affordable school but LA cost of living...LOL), and good job prospects for NGOs and UN-like organizations. So maybe you email the grad coordinator and ask if Mass com is acceptable in d list of undergrad programs. On the long run for me, I am also looking at NGOs but defnitely not just US. NGOs in Nigeria like FHI, 1 AIDS foundation (cnt rem the name) & another that partnered with Harvard are all in Nigeria and they pay REALLY WELL. Personally I rate NGOs over Banks and even oil firms but not Tech companies.

What Gboyega said earlier is correct. I applied to over 5 departments (mostly non-teaching, residential, admissions office etc). And once you meet their requirements, you just apply. Next stage is usually an interview and then a decision will be made. Apply to as many as you can (if there is no limit) but personally I prefer GA in my department. [quote author=purplesummer post=44058226]I got partial scholarships in 3 of the 4 schools I applied to. No GA though, just awards.
