AS the economic situation drives deep welts into the flesh of Nigerians, there is a growing air of melancholy and despair as the Federal Government appears lost for options to bring succour to the people in the near future.

The economy is biting hardest in the areas that impinge directly on the people’s material and social wellbeing, with steep drops in the supply of electricity and petroleum products, thus threatening the resilience and ability of Nigerians to survive. Both sectors are undergoing some of the worst and most prolonged stretches of scarcity.

For instance, in March 2016, power supply dropped to unprecedented low levels between 1,580 megawatts and 2,841 megawatts just before the Easter holidays, barely hours after President Muhammadu Buhari had promised to add 2,000 more megawatts into the national grid by the end of this year while aiming to top off to 10,000 megawatts by 2019.

Most parts of the country have endured lack of power supply in the past three months, and yet the Federal Government supported plans by the electricity distribution companies to jerk up prices in spite of poor services; an action that brought Labour and civil society groups to the streets in protest about two weeks ago.

Usually, when power supply gets nasty, most citizens turn to their generating sets for comfort, which means sinking a large portion of their income on petroleum products, such as petrol and diesel. The situation was compounded, however, by the scarcity of petroleum products, which has also held sway on and off for over four months.

The fuel scarcity is blamed chiefly on the inability of independent marketers to raise foreign exchange to import fuel due to the strict policies of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to protect the Naira and the nation’s foreign reserves.

The careless talk of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Ibe Kachikwu, that he did not have a magic wand to restore full supply within the immediate future, sparked angry calls for his resignation.

The fact that the Ministries of Petroleum Resources and Power are manned by President Buhari/Kachikwu and Babatunde Fashola, who operate at the highest level of executive function of the Federal Government makes this bout of petroleum and power scarcity seem beyond the capacity of the Federal Government to grapple with.

We demand that the Buhari government does something to alleviate the plight of Nigerians. It must come up with solutions as soon as possible. This is the time to translate the “change” that the people voted for from negative to positive change.
Nigerians need immediate relief, not apologies or flippant talk from those in leadership.

Awosiyan Segun... political cartoon satirist par excellence.
LudaChriz:
How power supply suddenly became a rocket science to Fashola & Osinbajo is what baffles me the most
Well, let's give him time- 6 months in his own words.
But I'd be generous enough to give him more time than he proposed- to evaluate his performance at the end of his stewardship of the Power sub-ministry.
DonMaxxy:
When some peps were chanting "change" against "transformation" I was just laughing cos they never understood that change can be via positiva or via negativia. Even Barrack Obama's change mantras, almost ruined the US politically and economically as they are now trailing behind Russia and China. Americans are now screaming "Make America Great Again"

Personally, I will prefer a corrupt govt that believes in transformation to a holy one that believes in an unrealistic change. Corruption is a human fault and it functions in all govts worldwide. Infact everyone has his leg in the boiling pot of corruption.

Let all of us park well and enjoy this "change" untill 2019. If you are fed up with the change, you jett off and leave the country.

If I see anybody come her to cry that we are suffering or that we have been scammed; i will lash that person. Everybody must enjoy this change for it is what Jega said we voted for last year.

What is Mr Buhari doing with over $300 billion so far recovered or returned from the corruption fight? shouldn't part of that money be channeled into building more power plants? Why is 3 trillion lying fallow in TSA while the people's economic social and political wellbeing is zero? who is using the interest accrued from these funds?

Pmb & Apc govt.has broken record negatively in their present rule since they came into power.rather than admit their failure, they go abt accusing Gej..
(1) 3month plus of fuel scarcity, they are now the govt.with the longest fuel scarcity period,(2)anoda negative records is in the appointment of ministers. when they came onboard,,the apc govt.also stayed 6 month b4 appointing ministers(3)anoda is in the disobedience to court rules,,they have the highest number of disobeying court orders just almost a yr into power & God knows how many more they will disobey b4 their regime ends(4)Apc govt. With pmb is also leading with president with the highest travelling oversea record with just months into power when the ppl he is rulling are suffering,,,(5) the list is much..,...

1.On fuel...it is obvious....subsidy has to go so that marketers would have the cash to import fuel. Sure...prices would be high...but they would fall (see the GSM experience).

2.On power.....let's be honest....it is going to take ten years to fully improve generation, and sort out the wretched transmission system that we have right now. Either way...we must increase power supply because it is key to getting us off oil permanently.

Why are people expecting miracles when square pegs were put in round holes.

Ngige is a medical doctor- in charge of Labour
Fashola a season lawyer who has never held spanner heads power.

Amaechi, a historian abi na English he read, heads transport.

Fayemi, a political scientist was made in charge of solid minerals. ..
Dakuku's whobis totally clueless about maritime has been put in charge of NIMASA.

Some mofos will tell you he is a technocrat. .how about we put a technocratic expert there.

The consequence of all the above misplacements is that they learn on the job and steal for the next 4 years.
when I saw the placements where expertise was sacrificed for political compensations. I knew Nigeria has entered auto reverse again.

Haven said that I think It's not good for a man to talk too much.

IMO, APC talked too much during their campaigns.
They got Nigerians to believe that the last administration was grossly incompetent.

Nigerians were so engrossed in their promises that they thought that once APC takes over interlocking blocks will start coming out from the ground to cover the ground for smooth walk.

Alas, they had no plan but talk and talk is cheap.

Fashola so nicely rubbished the power sector in the last regime that he said you don't need the brain of an astronaut to make power work in months.

Buhari was seated in the town hall meeting in Lagos when he made his analysis of the power sector.

PMB was so convinced that he handed over the sector to him.

Today we hear it's vandals behind power drops

Were these vandals there when Fashola was ranting? Yes. One will think he had solutions to vandalism.

If anybody I repeat, anybody still has hope with this government. ...examine your head and wake me up in 2019.
PDP killed Nigeria in 16years but APC is here to bury it.

This is the type of news that will prepare the minds of Nigerians toward 2019 on the personality and party to vote for......I wondered if by 2015 Jan, we can still boast of over 4,000 mw, what then could have reduced this mw to this ridiculous level under the "former action Governor"......madness in the land no doubt.
