A very foolish and useless move..of all the policies to scrap. Why not scrap agbero fee collecting from transporters.

Now nobody in my compound would agree to come out for it. Because that last saturday nobody get excuse. We are forced to clean every nook and corner of our compound and immediate surrounding. Rubbish
you guys are dirty o, so you mean you guys clean your compound only once in a month.

People like you are not supposed to b living in a city, anyway "wole wole" go visit una soon and lock that una filthy compound up since una dey expect government to force una to clean una house #smh

expect Lagos to be very dirty cos those Y people are the most dirty people on earth.

Note: Y means yam, yoga, yo-yo, yours, yesterday but it doesn't necessarily mean Yoruba!
Lagos is no longer populated 60% by Ibos?
Re: Ambode Abolishes Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise by Projectors(m): 4:10pm On Mar 31, 2016
Actually, it's shut down economic activities for that 3 hours but would people ever remember to clean their environment if there is no restriction and again most people use the environmental day to sleep at home.

I will advise we keep our environment clean at all time without waiting for Govt to remind us. The people in Govt always have clean environment, so therefore it's for our own good.

Do you realise NYC is actually a dirty city despite the fact that they are constantly cleaning the place.

Lagos state govt cannot afford to run a 24hrs cleaning service

NYC spend around $2.3B annualy to keep the city clean so how is that even comparable?
My point Exactly..

NYC is a much bigger city than Lagos and generates a lot more Waste (from Liquid to Solid to industrial to gaseous) than Lagos can even dream of and yet they have managed to control their waste disposal mechanism without having to kill off 3 manhours on a weekend a month which is precious to full time workers for Sanitation exercise.

Before you out rightly support the Sanitation exercise as is done in Nigeria today, you must first check participation. Most people dont even bother. Secondly, even the waste generated on those days still follow the normal disposal routine which is;

Pile in one corner until anyday the Refuse folks turn up.

Thirdly, it would be cheaper in the long run if the Government can set up a system aimed at making every Nigerian Sanitation conscious. Dispose of your waste properly, don't liter, report Sanitation violators, e.t.c. Calabar was able to achieve the title of the cleanest Nigerian city without having a Monthly sanitation exercise.

The Waste in my neighborhood that is so large gets cleared once a week.. Before the authorities even show up, the Garbage disposal is filled and overflowing into the road. This is not a problem that can be solved by a once a month activity..

The Nigerian Government has failed to see Sanitation and Waste management as an income generation means that is why they pay lip service attention to it.

The problem with this action is that there is no type of enforcement in place that will make sure sanitation exercises are done daily as insinuated by Ambode. Not impressed with the explanation behind the policy (too simplistic), I assume there must be more behind it.
what's too simplistic? I don't think you understand the value of time. we don't place premium on time that's why the country is where it is today.

serious minded countries don't toy with time, they don't give unnecessary holidays as we do here. that's why people go to work on election days. that's why they are always moving ahead with jet speed why we are still hopping with our back side

keep quiet man.
Its quite a big compound and open to some parts of the streets as they come in to fetch water from the well..which we seldomly use.
Everybody cleans his own part. But the general cleaning of the whole compound...like sweeping the floor and scrubbing the walls and clearing the whole drainage pipes, as well as the well area and all is done by the whole compound on the last saturday of every month. as everybody will be around and participate accordingly. So mr man.. Keep quiet, cause my compound is cleaner than 80% of the streets in lagos.

Bravo, this is a welcome development as I have always argued that the environmental sanitation days are a waste of manhours.

Monthly environmental sanitations have not improved public health nor cleanliness in Nigeria since its inception in the 1980s.

The government cannot shift it's responsibilities to its citizens in the guise of environmental sanitation. Rather efforts should be made to strengthen sanitation agency at the council level, this I believe will make a visible difference in public health across Lagos
you'll still come back here to complain how dirty LAGOS is. I give just 3months from now.

Lagos is now going to become dirtier, trust me. Because most Lagosians are very dirty and that monthly sanitation is one - if not the only thing that puts them in check. Now they're going to have all of the excuses in this world not to keep their environment clean.

Abia is industrialize in nature and haven't reach that level to depose there industrial waste.

That's not dirty but can't depose there waste properly

nay nay nay. Ambode ( THE GOVERNOR ) goofed in this regard. what da Bleep? This is completely a wrong decision. i support the monthly environmental exercise.
Lagos is so busy that people hardly have time for cleaning if not compelled to do so. The monthly restriction of movement between 7am to 10am helps alot. PLS AMBO REVERT THE LAW IMMEDIATELY IF NOT BE READY TO WELCOME BACK A DIRTIER LAGOS.
trust me

This decision is so so wrong. Do the markets constitute the whole of Lagos? This monthly exercise is the only way Landlords force their tenants to clean the envinronment. Lagos is going to go back to the days of "dirty lagos". I hope the governor changes his mind.

everything you just stated is what is supposed to be done daily my brother. it's not to be left to be done once in a month.

lagos in 70's and early 80's uses "wole wole " to keep people on their toes and lagos was way cleaner then. the monthly sanitation is unnecessary if the tax force is brought back to life

besides most lagosians don't even utilise the day to clean up their environment. they spend those hours watching films, playing football and having meetings. so the scrapping of the sanitation day is long overdue

by the time "wole wole " start locking up houses, there will no longer be need for landlords to force tenants to clean the house.

this is a right step in the right direction

by the time the dirty folks are slammed with heavy fines nobody will teach them to clean their environment, if you are too busy, pay people to do it for you.

This has been proven before not to work in the Nigerian society. People are too poor to bother about cleanliness on their own. Why change what is appropriate and best for a third world city?
Re: Ambode Abolishes Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise by victoriokelvin(m): 6:04pm On Mar 31, 2016
Imagine! It is apolly for Ambode to stop environmental sanitation which is usually hold on the last saturdays of every month. This has shown hw dirty d so called Governor is, is this d chnge we need in lagos. ES means that every individuals in lagos should take it as a responsibility 2 atleast clear nd tidy up his or her environment 2 avoid diseases or sickness wat ever u called it. Bros please reverse ur statement because d system as adopted by previous administration has help to reduced negligence on d side of some lagosian who will work 4rm monday 2 sunday without taken good care of their homes nd surroundings. I think ES gives people d opportunity to do cleaning @least once a month if nt everyday.
Re: Ambode Abolishes Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise by lekadornis: 6:14pm On Mar 31, 2016
This a very bad decision ooo......this guy never cancel sanitation the whole of lagos is getting dirtier by the day.
This guy jst wan turn back d hand of time for lagos
Re: Ambode Abolishes Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise by RuuDie(m): 6:16pm On Mar 31, 2016
I think this is a wrong call.... In a Lagos where most 'able-bodied' people in a compound leave home as early as 5am and return as late as midnight; then spend most of the weekend trying to catch some rest only to return to the grueling cycle again, it is actually very easy NOT to cultivate a cleaning culture unless it is FORCED!

Secondly, govt offices (with the exception of emergency services) and majority of private companies do not even conduct 'regular' business activity at the weekend - so where is the 'wasted' man-hour when that day isn't even a workday!?
