ki02020:I know it sounds like a common insult, but the reason there is so much confusion in this government is simple; Buhari is a dullard. There is no simpler or nicer way to put it. He doesn't understand how things work in a modern economy, nor unfortunately, does he have the intellectual capacity to learn at this stage of his life. Now, remember that APC came to power by demonizing every single thing, every single policy of GEJ. Change was their mantra. Well, just like idio.ts, they went about about changing everything, even things that were well grounded and economically sound. They are too proud and hypocritical to give GEJ credit for anything, so they are bound to be flip flopping and licking their own vomits every so often. All their policy pronouncements are contradictory, cancelling each other out upon implementation. I have never in my life witnessed this type confusion in government. |

If govt really wants to be sincere and alleviate the suffering of its citizens, Refineries should be built and makes them work. Why should Nigeria be importing refined petroleum product when we all know its cheaper to refine than to import. The funniest aspect of it is that before any administration comes to power they saw the PROBLEMS and PROMISE to proffer SOLUTIONS but immediately they got there, they starts shifting error to any past administration instead of providing solutions. This also apply to Power sector. |

Why is it that Nigerians who defend this oil subsidy scheme (and all its attendant shortages, bunkering and smuggling) never bother to ask themselves why even countries like Cameroon, Niger, Benin, Togo and Ghana never suffer from similar problems, even when they have no oil of their own? The answer is simple: their governments don't attempt to interfere in the business of oil importing, refining or distribution! Nigeria's fuel problems are as self-inflicted as the shortage of phones back in the days when NITEL had a monopoly. The answer to Nigeria's fuel issues is as simple as it gets: just abolish all subsidies, privatize the government refineries, deregulate the sector, stop subsidizing Dollars for a few and allow the Naira to float, and be done with it. I guarantee that all fuel shortages will completely vanish within 3 months of such policies being passed, and the free market price for fuel will actually be lower than the current black market rate. Those who say that such policies can't work, because Nigeria is somehow exempt from the laws of economics, have to explain what is so special about Nigeria that sets it apart from the rest of West Africa. Apologists for the fuel subsidy must also explain how the current setup actually benefits most Nigerians who must queue for hours and days to load jerry cans with petrol at the "official" price - if it is available at all. The only parties that will really stand to lose out from a deregulated policy are those who are currently profiting from oil bunkering, fuel smuggling, fraudulent invoicing and round-tripping - as well as Aliko Dangote, who is currently enjoying all sorts of outrageous government subsidies to build the refinery the ignorant masses are cheering him for, as if he were engaging in charity. |

fistonati:The government was very foolish to have danced to the tune of propaganda by claiming there was no need for subsidy. Independent importers then left importation to the government while paying NNPC in naira... It is the cause of the current scarcity.... As they could not continue the with the facade, for long. |

This government seem to be playing on the intelligence of Nigerians. One question I keep asking is that, are Nigerians really feeling the effect of the subsidy? Bringing back subsidy is just a short term solution to lingering oil problems in this country. For us to get it right, this is my candid view. Let the government totally remove the subsidy its paying on this product cos the effect is not trickling down on Nigerians. Furthermore, the government should allow the independent marketers fix prices for this product and remove all ceilings placed on oil prices. The effect of this is that, Nigerians would get this product easily but costly on the shot term but on the long term, competition in the sector will force oil prices to indeed fall amidst availability just like the Telecommunications sector . God bless Nigeria. |

ki02020:If they were not confused in the 1st place, they will know that the right thing to do is to put all those measures in place b4 removing it. There is no trial and error in government where the lives of millions of Nigerians are @ stake. The should have done their research properly b4 thinking that nonsense they were totting. |

juicyboobs:The marketers are quite lucky now. They will collect the subsidy and still sell PMS to us at nothing less than N150.00 per litre. What is wrong with deregulating this commodity and let people sell at whatever price they wish so that we can have fuel and get over this nightmare. |
