SHELL.

Why? Because it is SHELL.

Lets assume the difference in salary between the two is 150k: 150k x 48 months = N7.2mil.

With 7.2mil saved up after 4yrs, I don't think you will be in need of a regular job when the shell contract expires.

Even if you insist on regular jobs thereafter, you have SHELL crested on your cv. Trust me, you have nothing to worry about.

If i were you, I will take the 100k Job. Four years right? That will finish in a blink of an eye. Have you heard of oil workers being disengaged and right after they found no Jobs. What i am saying is working for shell may not guarantee your success in the future and employers may seek bigger expectations when you are seeking for a job right after.

If you are sure of the career progression and job security in this 100k Job, i believe you should stick with it. After all, your salary will increase over time. What is the evidence that as a contract staff, your salary will increase? I dont know either. As a contract staff, your contract can even be terminated at any time. That four years may not even be certain after all.

However, this is just my opinion though.

And also, Put God First. That little thing you think may have nothing, could actually be the one that will connect you to the bigger picture. I am a living testimony.

OP, l remember l was in the position sometime last month, l had a steady security job that pays and £2500 monthly, however, l got a contract job as a data validation specialist that pays £4000 monthly for 6month.
I actually did not hesitate to take the contract job because of the exposure and experience that comes with it.
I will strongly advised you take the contract job.....your is even more extensive, well into 4years.
BUT if you not sure of the duration of the contract don't take it.
Above all, seek the face of the almighty God.

Hmmm, people can be funny. So u get 200k job on contract with shell job and below 100k job in another one and u r here asking people's opinion.I thought what you would have been asking is that how sure that the person that told you to start getting ready for the shell job will not fail you, otherwise if you are more than 100% sure that it is real, why should you be talking of less than 100k job and career this and that.Money matters in all we do,and working in shell alone whether as contract staff or not will give you more exposure and opportunities let alone being 4years.Before the expiration of the 4years,there is every possibility that you can be connected and hooked up to higher level.Talking of job security with less than 100k,how sure are you that you are secured and mind you that in 4yrs,there is possibility that you wont be earning up to 200k in the less than 100k job even promotion.Money matters, forget about all these bla bla bla,it is when you re earning less than 100k especially here in Lagos that expenses and cost of living is very high that your eye will open and you will know the meaning of "If i had known".However, its left for you to make the choice and i cant influence your decission, the decission is yours. I just want to make a common sense according to Ben Bruce.

Hi, You need to examine your self.Do a simple analysis:
. Are u a risk taker or not? Do you enjoy or do well with uncertainty?
. Shell- risk
. Job 2- almost certain you'll remain there after 4 years.
. Whatever you do know that money isn't everything.

In a case like this no one can perfectly predict what would happen or clearly tell you what the future holds for you in each of those establishment, therefore, my candid advice is that you take one week to pray to seek the face of God for him to guide you. I assure you after a week of prayer you would surely get a direction.

Please I need mature advice if possible from professionals and career persons.

Since late last year, I have been pursuing this job stuff from Shell which someone close to me who works there referred me to.
It is a contract job which will last for about 4 years. It was supposed to start late last year but due to the delay in change of govt, it couldn't.

Last month, I got another new job. The pay is a little below 100k and there is career progression and assured promotions in this new job.

Now my referrer in the Shell job has told me get ready to start on the contract job by next month. This one pays above 200k but its just for 4 years period.
So am confused and don't know what to do right now.
Am thinking that this Shell job might connect me to a permanent and bigger position if I go for it.

If the facts in bold are lacking in shell's, forget it!

The probability of being retained in shell after the 4 years is less than 1/1000.

I know guys who worked with shell on contract term for more than 15 years and were later dumped. Don't even think they were not good at or dedicated to their job.

I prefer a dish of corn with peace of mind to that of meat with mental stress.

Nothing is as good as having a secured job. A bit less than 100k, to me, is ok for a start. What you do with it is what really count.

Bekky,I suggest you take the shell opportunity.
i work with shell as a contract staff too.Initially, i was given 4 months contract, but now this is my 6th year plus with shell and counting.
Recently,( No,2015) i was moved to a new(better than previous position) department.
what am trying to say here is, you will have more opportunity when you join shell no matter contract staff or not.
just pray over it
Cheers

i wonder y everyone is advicing you to hit the second option because of its brand name.
Becky before i join the bandwagon of option two or do otherwise, i need some info from you to help me put my opinion together on this issue.
1. what is your career path ( i mean your profession)
2. Are you ready or do you wish to pursue this career path to its hight?
3. What is your position in your current Job, and how long is the career progression in this job?
4. In what position or capacity you will be working in the proposed contrct job with shell?

Response to the above questions will allow me to form my opinion, and to ditch out my advice as well.

My friend, first and foremost congratulations on the fact that you have a job although did not tell how well your current employers are doing in the market or business world. Good to know that there is room for career growth and promotion on that job. I guess that means very likely confirmation at expiration of your probation (that is if if you were employed to be a staff and not contractor). As for the other offer, a contract job is a contract job. Gone are the days that you would go into SHELL as a contract staff and get conversion to full staff. The greater percentage of SHELLs employees/ workforce esp. in Nigeria are contract staff (this is basically to reduce overhead). Some have been there for 15- 20 years as contractors on the same salary and even have regrets of having stayed that long. Even at 200k, thats complete stagnation and if i may add, your contract can be terminated at any time because of your status. May that not be your portion. It is important for us to learn from other peoples mistake. Money is not everything. If there is room for growth in your current place, you never can tell where God will take you in those 4 years. Most likely over and above the 200k+ SHELL job. That you worked as a contract staff means nothing and does not in anyway enhance your resume. Besides, you will be amazed at how fast 4yrs will go by, no growth, same pay, same task, more responsibilities (if and when you settle down), less motivation. Think hard and pray more. It always seems to look greener on the other-side.

I advise you stay with your new job. With the way the oil sector in this country is moving, my dear nothing is guaranteed and besides its CONTRACT job and it can terminated easily.. I got a contract job that didn't even last for a week sometime this year.
Best advise so far.
Oil firms are struggling to breakeven. No oil job, except the pay is really huge, is attractive right now. Except there is a clause preventing them from terminating ur appointment before the 4 year period, I suggest u stick to ur present job. 4 years is a long time and the oil sector would most likely recover by then.

I disagree with you. How do you know the 100k JoB has job security? you said you know some guys that worked with shell for 15 years and were later dumped? i think i would better work for shell with a good package for 15 years and be dumped than working for a package of 100k which am not sure how secure the Job is.with good package with shell for 15 years,i think one suppose to have setup a backup system that will generate income apart from his primary Job.

Thank u very much.

Most of the folks here telling you to go for shell don't know much about shell system!!

I can't really give you any advise cos the info is too limited & you ought not to put the full info here either

what's the nature of the job? is it a construction project or design Job or what?

That a project will last 4yrs doesn't mean you will be needed for the 4yrs.

Take my project for example, each discipline had 2 reps doing back to back, a time came when they dropped 1 rep each

Before that, they slashed some salaries as much as half & some were & still being owed for months

Hope you know that there are levels of being a contract staff in shell, so which one is yours?

Shell doesn't know you, you are a staff of a labour supplier, they call it outsourcing

Labour suppliers also differs in how they treat their staff, at a point, one of the labour supplier for my project had to tell all their staff to stay back cos shell had not paid him for 1yr. The guy got tired of paying salaries from his pocket!!

so more info will be needed, by the way most oil projects are going to suffer this year, the priority will be on gas projects

my advise take the other job if you're interested in job security but if you have a project at hand eg masters program abroad, take the shell job but remember, there are no guarantee

Here's my take which will likely not be all-encompassing because of the info you provided:
SALARIES
Since both jobs are legit and the Shell contract job will kick off next month, given the comparison of salaries: a little below 100k = 95k or 90k or 80k even vs. above 200k (210k or 220k or 225k), the Shell contract job is a better option.

Mathematically, if the other job pays 95,000 every month and you've got an expenditure and investment allocation of N45,000 a month, you'll save N50,000 every month.

Multiply that by 12 (months) and you've got N600,000 x 4 (years) = N2,400,000

For Shell, if she pays you N220,000/month and your expenditure and investment allocation is N75,000 a month (I increased this because of spending more when you earn more and also, if you get to work at Shell, I assume the prices of items there MAY be more expensive), you'll save N145,000 every month.

Multiply that by 12 (months) and you've got N1,740,000 x 4 (years) = N6,960,000

So...?

CAREER PROGRESSION & PROMOTIONS
While the 100k paying job assures you career progression (vertically, by moving up the rungs of the job in that company), you've got to find/figure out what the career progression will offer you:
a) A higher pay of N150k or less?
b) More networking opportunities?
c) Time duration for each progression to occur?

I hope this helps, BeckyBeky.

@ the bolded and colored; U made a lot of sense there. A lot of pple change employment without considering the prospects of the company and the industry into which they are going.
I have turned down a lot of Jobs because of this single fact. From banking to manufacturing etc. As a financial expert, if I don't see the prospect of future growth and sustainability in a company, If a company is facing shrinking mkt size and unfavourable operating policies, If I cant see the mgt taking smart steps to grow the business, then I am not coming on board. I walk.

All those telling you to abandon your current job for this contract job have never experienced it. I wish i can communicate to you on phone and expose you to details. Ask yourself what you will do if community wahala stops the project after 3 months and you have resigned the old job. Ask yourself what you will do if your contractors owes you after three months of work. Don't be carried away with the name Shell. Corruption is terrible there. I have been there my dear and the experience was not pleasurable. This is a public forum i could have photocopied my shell ID as proof. nothing gives joy like a permanent secured job. Shell staff who were dropped during this crude price drop have not been able to secure another job let alone contract staff (so it's not guarantee to anything). Its also not about money. A bird at hand .... With a paid secured job i do a lot. Do you know how many oil and gas contracts were terminated just because of dollar and crude prices?(simple policies and decisions affect contract jobs and they have no end of contract benefits!). There are so many unknowns. You have the final decision.

I usually don't comment much on nairaland but I think I need to comment on this to maybe save you from a grave mistake.

first of all I need to tell you I had worked as a contract staff for 6 years before I finally got my deliverance and got out. I had to resign without even knowing where to go or not having any job to fall back to .

The truth is, contract job is slavery. If they offered you 400k, and you are currently earning 100k, I will still ask you not to take the contract job.

I left a telecom company and joined an oil and gas company as a contract staff because the pay was about triple what I was earning. as at then (2007), my take home was about 107k (apart from housing and other benefits). I regretted by action after 4years because my former collegues where now earning more or about the same. It became difficult to leave because, I was still in the same position as I came in - no promotion, no change of position. My other colleagues were promoted to positions like manager, CTO, senior Manager/ engineers etc with years of experience, I was left with the same name I came in with. This made it very difficult to pull out and impossible to get a job of half the amount they are paying me because of my position and no other experience than the one I came with. I have been doing the same thing for 4 years - no change.

The contract trick works this way, you can be employed as a customer support staff and be paid 300k. At the point of your employment the money is big and cannot be compared with any other customer support staff job in other companies, so it seem you hit jackpot. The true begins to reveal itself when after 4 years you are still a customer support staff and all your colleagues are now managers, supervisors, senior staff with wealth of experience. Their salary keeps increasing, meet and surpasses yours and you remain a mere support staff. In the job market you CV carries an entry level experience and you are not considered for better jobs like supervisors, manager etc because you don't have any other experience- you become stuck. If you decide to resign and take a customer support work work somewhere else, they will ask to pay you 100k or 150k at most (returning you back 4 years what you use to be). It becomes very hard.

Its like Nigerians who travel abroad with good qualification and end up doing mania jobs. Initially it looks good but after some years they discover that they have put themselves into slavery because all their colleagues are now big men and they can no longer compete with them.

Be wise my brother, anywhere that has no prospect will never give you joy. You will hate yourself for making that decision later. while I was there, all the contractors hated themselves and wished they never made the decision.

I later had to resigned after 6 years (I used 2 more years trying to get out, or getting another job). Today I am thanking God for it. I started my business and life's been good- actually, its been better.

Don't dear do it.

Mr...forget about career progression in this instant and go for bank account progression....
See consider the shell job as an investment in a stock, of which you have insider info that the shares will blow in 4 years. You buy 100 million naira now to get 2billion?
Check this out...it will take u 4 yrs to save 1000000 in the 100k job..but for the shell job if you save 100k a month you get 1.2 million in 12 months!!! And in 4 months you have 4.8 million!!! On the 100k job it might take you 10 to 12 yrs to make that amount in ur savings.

Beckybeky:
Please I need mature advice if possible from professionals and career persons.

Since late last year, I have been pursuing this job stuff from Shell which someone close to me who works there referred me to.
It is a contract job which will last for about 4 years. It was supposed to start late last year but due to the delay
