The Naivety Of Southerners by 4lashyme: 7:15pm On Apr 12, 2016 |
In my few years in the social media and studying the Nigerian political landscape, I have observed some anomaly within the different tribes in the southern region/part/protectorate of Nigeria. There is serious division among us even when it is clear that we share many important common values. The Ibos, Yorubas, Benin, Efiks, Ijaws, Isokos, etc all have peaceful nature, and practice the form of religion that preaches peaceful coexistence. Furthermore, we are mostly educated, we promote intellectual excellence and creativity, our different tribes/cultures practice some forms of democratic ideology and above all we are from the old Southern Protectorate/Southern Nigeria [with similar climatic conditions and topography]. On paper, all the above mentioned characteristics should make people see us as homogeneous or at the very least a united people. But even with our shared values, we still display sheer disunity and hatred for each other. This is so obvious that even in our normal everyday conversation; we tend to express our disunity while at the same time promoting the unity of the Northerners. A good example is the way we classify ourselves in Nigeria. We can safely agree that anybody from Sokoto, Borno, Plateau, Kogi, Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, is usually called a Northerner or “Aboki” [No offence intended please]. Are people from Cross River, Imo, Bayelsa, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, generally classified as one southerners in our everyday vocabulary? NO! Instead we switch to the divisive style of tribal identifications of Ibo, Yoruba, etc. to our own detriment. While forgetting that there are as many different tribes in the North as there are here in the South. This is the problem. The tribal division in the south is getting dangerously out of control that if not checked, we run the risk of losing forever our collective advantage in the political structure of this country. A good example is our criticism of public/political office holders. In this new administration, the Ministers and Governors that have come under our “hell fire” of criticisms are; FASHOLA, EMEFIELE, AMAECHI, KACHIKWU and ADEOSUN our brothers and sister from our beloved South occupying in combination the most important portfolios in the nation’s political atmosphere. But we [all from the same South] want to pull them down one after the other. In fact, we can’t wait for all of them to fail and be fired. My Ibo and Ijaw brothers were so happy at Gbajabiamila’s failure to clinch the Speaker position that it stopped just short of a National celebration. In the same vein, my Yoruba folks are waiting for the Glorious day when Emefiele, Kachikwu, or Ekweremadu will be thrown out of office. Furthermore, of all the 36 state governors in Nigeria, Fayose, Oshiomhole, Mimiko, Wike, and Okorocha are the most insulted as if their counterparts up North are not guilty of the same sin with which we want to crucify our own. A critical look at some of our criticisms unmasks the tribal/ethnic motivation in them. As a people, there has never been a record of fight/riot between us proving that we are peace loving people capable of living together and have always done so even before history. But for some sinister reason, we are always happy when one of our own [from another tribe] is innocently attacked and killed by the Fulani herdsmen. When the businesses or shops of one tribe get burnt/collapse, there is silent jubilation in the heart of others. It’s like we here generally wish calamity on one another with the flawed thinking that one tribes downfall is our tribes opportunity to rise. Forgetting that while we are busy plotting misfortune for other tribes in this region, the tribes in the North are uniting to become stronger and taking advantage of our naivety for their own gains. The north has been fashioning their unity into a formidable stronghold in the country and always [at every opportunity] present a united position on national issues. This is also demonstrated in the associations they promote. While they champion and support the Northern Governor’s forum and the Northern Youth forum, and Arewa people’s congress, we in the south are busy with Ohaneze group, OPC, Niger-delta, Ijaw people’s congress, etc. where is the collective unity in such associations? How can each individual group confront the dominant power of the Arewa group? Our Southern governor’s forum is either none existent or is in disarray. Even us the young ones waste our energy, intellect and megabytes to rain insults at each southern tribe here. Curiously, unlike the northerners, most of our elites, politicians and young people are educated, smart and capable of constructive dialogue that can iron out our little differences [if any: I think the differences are artificial rooted in falsehood and fallacy] and merge us into a united Southern people capable of stacking their claims at the national platform. The gains are for us all to have and to share. Who said we can’t have a rail link from Lagos-Ore-Benin-Onisha-PH-Calabar. If the north regards Kano as their major city, then why are some southern tribes not happy with Lagos as our own major city? Why is the Ibo man so keen on having investments moved away from Lagos [even when Lagos is the national hub for investment and talent], and why is the Yoruba man uncomfortable with industrial development in other southern states like Cross River, Anambra [forgetting that the more industrialization/development spread in the south, the better it is for all of us]? You will agree with me that we are the architect of our own problems. It’s not the northerners, or the Fulani herdsmen, or the British [as our Ibo brothers would like to have us believe]. It is our fault! Our own tribal pride, jealousy and bitterness. The Ibo man wish that the Yoruba man fails, the Yoruba man wishes the same for the Ibo man, the Efik man wishes the Ibo man bad luck, the Ibo man returns the same wish. The Ijaw man hopes the Yoruba man runs into trouble and the Yoruba man hopes the same for him, and it goes on and on in circles expanding into every aspects of our society. We can’t move forward or make any significant national impact in this divisive state. Because of our mutual destructive approach, we have been relegated to playing second fiddle/supporting role in a political climate which we were designed to lead and dominate. We have to unite under one banner as “Southerners”. We have to drop our tribal/ethnic sentiments here in the south and form a formidable united entity to champion the collective cause of our people. We have a lot of things going well for us and we share more in common. We are; pro-live [we don’t kill for the fun of it], democratic, progressive, creative, educated and respect our institutions. And above all, we can derive much more gains for our region and people if we are united. So I propose for a start we begin to change the way we identify ourselves by dropping the ethnic/tribal tag [I’m Yoruba, I’m an Ibo guy]. It is divisive and counter-productive to our common aspiration. I prefer “I am a Southerner from Imo state”; “He is a Southerner from Ogun state”. I don’t think it should be difficult for us since we are already comfortable to say “He is a Northerner from Bauchi”. This doesn’t change our respect and value for our various tribes. We are from our states and villages, and we are also from SOUTHERN NIGERIA. #iamasoutherner 5 Likes 1 Share |

So what do you want Igbo and other easterners who have been warning you about licking fulani arsss to do? There is a tribe down south that have their tongues deep into Fulani asss. Infact when Buhari won the election with what I call 'media rigging', this tribe told the rest of the south that they were no longer southerners but 'westerners'. The 'sai chanji victory dance' threads are still here on NL. The Igbo have for donkey years confronted the fulani but guess who defends this fulanis against the East?- the ones that said they were no longer southerners but westerners-The yorubas! The SS/SE will confront and check Fulani brigandage head-on with or without the so called 'neo-westerners'. They (yorubas) should be the ones proclaiming that Igbos have been right all these years and come to the East in penance and restitution holding an olive branch and begging for a 'southern alliance'. SE/SS will not go to them! If they are too big for that, they should stand where they stand holding their lovely fulani anus and licking it like mango without complaint, the SE/SS will stand where it stands. No shaking! Thank you. 9 Likes 2 Shares |

Our style in the South will be wonderful if all the Southern legislatures will pass resolutions individually that they want FULL AUTONOMY for State Governments with regards to sourcing and applications of their Funds, their Security, Safety and Success. When this is achieved through Constitution amendment, different types of mergers and combinations of states will emerge to foster economic cooperation of states, understanding and growth and progress of Nigeria. 1 Like |

No way! Nothing like "I am a Southerner" This cannot work as a certain tribe will never allow such unity in the south. The rest of us cannot be fooled |

In the course of our investigations, we subsequently obtained a text message sent by Abdulmunin Jubril, the House of Representatives Chairman on Appropriations, in which he provided an update to leaders of all the Standing Committee leaders, and asking them to stand by him in case the executive fought back because he had included and removed some items from the budget. http://saharareporters.com/2016/04/11/lagos-calabar-rail-project-new-controversy-between-arms-nigerian-government-over-2016 |

Your collective Achilles heel (or nemesis) is in the ignorance fueled superiority complex you have in your head regarding northerners. Just read the tripe up there; southerners are smart, educated, bla bla as if ALL northerners are illiterate dunces that know nothing but to kill and destroy, and ALL southerners are degree clutching intellectuals without a criminal destructive bone in their bodies (I even read somewhere in the article that southern tribes have never battled one another ). Continue to underestimate your 'rivals' at your peril and blind yourselves with delusions of grandeur while the carpet continues to be pulled from under your feet as you're continually dominated from all sides. This is beyond naivety, it's a deadly mix of ignorance, conceit, insincerity and political illiteracy. Keep playing yourselves . 6 Likes 1 Share |

NONSENSE! As long as the unity will only be based and fueled by unreasonable hatred and enmity against the so called Northerners, not common zeal and aspiration to build a formidable Nigerian Nation, its DEAD ON ARRIVAL. You can only achieve unity and progress with superior ideology but NOT share HATRED for other people. 1 Like |

The north wants development in there region that only them would enjoy, not all Nigerians, even Nigerians who mistakenly venture into there region they mark u and locate where u stay so that they can use u as killing practice during election times and over there religion. They built all the roads in the north, even interior villages with zero civilization hv very good federal roads, while places in the south like owerri-ph road, aba roads, lagos roads, are in worst of the worst shapes. In this life u MUST REAP WHAT YOU SOW. With the way Nigeria is going if Nigeria gets into problem like what happened in Iraq, syria and the rest, maybe they are after Lagos, people from the ss/se wud go and sign up in the invaders army to help them kill their country men, or westerners wud sign up in the invader's Army to help the invaders kill there ss/se brothers. 1 Like |

madenigga: What you refer to as 'bootlicking' is what strategists call 'stooping to conquer', but I don't expect you to understand the concept since you and your kin seem to have an in-built political handicap. It's the politics you suck so badly in because of ego and emotion. Last time I checked, it was the Yorubas that were winning on both sides regardless of whether it's the Lagos-Calabar or Lagos-Kano rail track is built. 1 Like |

Refer to the 1999 elections.
