It's not about "fighting". It is about speaking out against evil.

Read the piece and stop criticising for the sake of it. Soyinka's sacrifices as a young man were acknowledged.

Why are you waiting on Wole Soyinka? He has created his path and why can't you be the next voice for others. Why can't you stand up like he did many years back. Do you have any idea of how it is quite challenging for an old man to do the same things he did in his youth. Once in a while, you may see or hear his thoughts on certain matters but you may just be the next this generation is waiting for...

@OP, How many fights have you been involved in since you were born?

Soyinka tasted prison as a 28 year old fighting injustice in 1962. He went to prison again for 3 years because of Biafra in 1967. Countless brushes with the govts since then.

Where were you in 2010 when he, bakare, odumakin etc were trekking under the sun for Jonathan to be set free from Turai's cage?

Were you not on earth when he was televised advising buhari to convene an economic summit?

You want an 82 year old man to be fighting your battle? Are you not ashamed? You stay on internet ranting everyday and you stay waiting for a grand father to keep fighting for your future. A 23 year old Tunisian started the Arab spring, what are you waiting for?

The man has paid his dues pls. Let him enjoy the few years he has left abeg.
the truth they say is bitter and I must say the op nailed it hard. Why are you trying to divert the topic....... Or is it now a crime to say the truth bare as it is. Let's call a spade a spade, wale Soyinka has been gag by APC 82 million dinner that's why he has lost his voice and to crown it all,Bubu is just clueless, the true defination of an illiterate presido.

Soyinka was vehement in his attack against Gej. At least it's expected that he should speak against the ills of this country today for CONSCIENCE sake. He was one of the reasons Gej was voted out. He gave Buhari his vote of confidence. 82 million was spent in hosting him. I guess his conscience has been bought.

He went against the Truth he stood for.

And the Truth he stood for is that no Northern of Fulani extraction means well for Nigeria.

And have you spoken out not just on Nairaland?

I wonder if this op has conscience at all. Like a free minded person wole soyinka needs to watch and study this current situation very well. Not that he has nothing to say. He understands the calamity that 16 perilous years have done us and what wailers are expecting after sucking the nation dry. Buhari did not cause this current misfortune, rather he is in to clean a Longtime decay of our system and to set us on the glorious path.

The issue is beyond the economy. We are looking at the injustice suffered by the poor and defenseless. Innocent blood is being shed by the herdsmen. 300 in a community alone is not a small number. Soyinka is the same person that attacked Gej and called Patience shepopo.

As for me, I'm fairly comfortable with life. But when I think about others, I feel so sorry.

How many fights have you done beyond ranting on NL? How many times did you condemn any.of the wrong moves of GEJ?

I am saying he deserves to rest. He is a grand old man now, let younger Nigerians like the op and others on this thread pick up the gauntlet. Afterall, Soyinka was in his twenties when he started speaking up.

It is a shame that most of the ranters on this thread are about Soyinka's age when he started his activism, yet they still expect him at 85 to keep fighting for them.

Nigerians are funny. When Nnamdi Kanu fought the injustice, how many people support him. People looked at him and laughed. They left him to fight alone. The truth is that people like Soyinka have been compromised that's why he can't say much. At least he should speak for conscience sake.

The author of this article woefully fails to understand the primary goal of Wole Soyinka in his activist days.

It is to speak up against brutal dictatorship regimes or fight when he feels that ideals of democracy are about to be usurped.

15 million people made their voices known when they voted for Buhari in 2015. Seriously, you want Kongi to speak against that? That will be going against everything he fought for all his life.

Lack of fuel, economic hardship, riots in the North are not what Wole Soyinka fight against. His silence implies that he respects the people's will to elect a person who can solve their core challenges.

Kongi has been an activist long before many people's fathers were born. Frankly speaking, most of you are unworthy to hold a torch to his record. Calling him out at a ripe age of 82, when your grandmothers teeth have all fallen off, is not just bewildering. It shows lack of willingness to take responsibility by this generation. The very reason we are all heading off the cliff like sheep!

Obasanjo endorses APC moves, as party leadership visit Abeokuta
22.Dec 2013

The push by the opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC to dislodge the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP received a boost yesterday as former President Olusegun Obasanjo openly threw his weight behind the APC’s current initiatives.
The APC leadership, comprising some national leaders and governors visited him Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Saturday to solicit the former president’s support for the party in the forthcoming elections.
The party leaders, which started converging on Obasanjo’s Hilltop Mansion around 5:22pm, included former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Bisi Akande; former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari; former speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari; former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff; Senator Osita Isunazor; Senator Bukola Saraki and Lai Mohammed.
Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State came to the former president’s house in company with the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissioin, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode and others in a convoy of three black jeeps.
Other APC governors at the meeting included Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Abdulfattah Ahmed (Kwara), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Senator Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo).
The Chairman of the New PDP, Kawu Baraje led some of his members and the former Kaduna State Chairman, Yero Makama, to the meeting.
Presenting the party chieftains and the APC governors to Obasanjo during the opening of the meeting, Akande said the party was in support of the former president’s 18-page letter to President Goodluck Jonathan.
The APC National Leader, Tinubu who alluded to Obasanjo’s contribution to the building of the Nigerian nation, lamented that the country was divided more than ever.
Apparently referring to Obasanjo’s recent letter to Jonathan, he enjoined the former president not to shy away from speaking the truth.
Tinubu added that the APC had resolved to rescue Nigeria, appealing to Obasanjo to lead the mission.
“You’ve come out of tribulation and held the highest position in this country. We are here because of your courage. Nobody can say he has information more than you. You have surmounted a number of crises. Nigeria is divided more than before; to realise stable Nigeria, we want to encourage you to continue to speak the truth. We’re resolved and determined to rescue Nigeria. We want you as navigator,” he said.

Yes he campaign for GEJ an latter lambasted him.. he took to the street to register his disdain for fuel subsidy removal.. where was he when this Govt announced the removal of subsidy before bringing it on again?this Govt is subsiding fuel at 87 naira and we are buying at over 160. Where is he now when we are buying fuel at over 160 per litre even in Abuja? Falana is going to court to stop this government from taking more loans.
