No law was broken here. The thief broke into his home and put him at risk, he responded by defending himself.

How was he to know the thief did not have a gun or any other weapon?
In many climes, it's illegal to use "excessive force". Basically, force more than enough to stop the thief or kill him.

Sure there is no "force-o-meter" to measure the force, much less in emergency danger situation.

But where the law works, you may not get away with killing a thief. I wrote above of a guy given 8 years in jail in UK for it.

Bones break and join after many months. If the hand isn't dead, then the bone can also attach itself

it seems some peeps can't get it.
1. it was in the dark, no identity.
2. it was through the window, can't be arrested.
3. you cannot hold on to the hand, he might be armed.
4. for the man to get a cutlass and still be in time to cut off the hand, that means the kid is not new to it, meaning, the man has an experience or the neighbourhood.
darkness respects no one. he should thank his star he wasn't caught by mob, na lynching tinx.

This is wickedness. The guy cannot claim this was done to prevent his phone from being stolen but simply to cause bodily harm.It was not even done in self defense as there was a protector in between them. He could have just grabbed the hand or used a stick on it. Very sad!!!!!

In the UK, he could get up to 7 years imprisonment for this and the thief could also sue his as.s
If he used a stick on it and the 'minor' gets a bone fracture, what will you say?

That the man's action was good?

I haye phone and gadget thieves with passion. When i was in school, thry stole my phone at every second i was unaware or loose guarded. Infact, i remember saving hard to buy a good phone then only for it to be stolen in less than 3 weeks. I felt bad. One thing about a phone is that even if its a tecno phone you bought at 10k, after using it for various activities, the value to you is more than 10k. And these thieves know this, yet they heartlessly go about steating. Dont be surprised if the boy was successful in the act, that he would have been part of those pitying and consoling the man. I ve seen this happen many times. So, very good for the boy and such punishment should keep being metered out to heartless thieves.

Where those big big SAN lawyers wey sabi to defend executive thieves. Go tell the judge say de boy no be thief ,na charge he wan charge de phone.
I'm talking to you as a fellow human being say that punishment no in any way warrant the short sleeve. Reasons : There was no established immediate threat to the life of the house owner considering there was an iron bars limiting only hands and the thief wasn't armed with a gun capable of being released through the window opening and causing bodily harm to the house owner.

The house owner out of fear over reacted. You can gauge the amount of power he applied to cut clean the hand. If sticking ones hands through a window can warrant this from the house owner, it means he has a lot of repressed issues that might need psychologist to fine tune. What if the thief was a friend or family member trying to play pranks on him?

When I was in Nigeria, I saw and noticed that over 80% percent of people walking her streets are no longer human beings. I did the little I was able to do to teach with examples how humans should be different from animals. some learn and turn a new leaf while some don see mugu and try to take advantage. I'm no better human than them but, Nigeria is sitting on a gun powder and any trigger to this would be catastrophic! Too many problems plague Nigeria and nigerians simultaneously yet nobody is talking.

Biblical shari'ah law of cutting off hand of a thief is applied to a boy trying to steal phone in Delta state.

Deuteronomy 25:11 ESV
“When men fight with one another and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts, then you shall cut off her hand. Your eye shall have no pity.

These were the biblical verses used to carry out the cutting:

Matthew 18:8 ESV
And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.

Matthew 5:29 ESV
If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.

The man is despicable. The most I can do is to hit the hand with a stick or something. But cutting off the hand was plain barbaric!

It takes wisdom to live a safer existence in Nigeria considering the level of lack and want. Don't go and be displaying extravagant lifestyles in the mist of hunger and not expect to be visited. This is in no way an endorsement of crime but how for you to secure your life in a jungle Nigeria.

Many people in Nigeria are actually suffering from one form of mental illness. I'm not even saying this to insult Nigerians.
For that man to cut the boy's hand off completely with just one clean stroke shows that his intention was to cut the hand off, he deliberately used enough force to make sure he severed the hand and it also shows that he saw the hand before cutting it off and took note how it was positioned so he could get a clean strike.
Now if he saw the hand that implies he knew the hand belonged to a young child so why did he still deliberately try to chop it off even with that knowledge?
Many Nigerians have lost their humanity, its terrible the way suffering and strife makes them behave like animals. I am even sure people who heard the news in the boys area laughed and made jokes of the situation like it was nothing.

weather the thief is a minor or not. It only takes a heartless human being to cut off another fellow hand because he was trying to steal a phone over the window.

A lighter punishment that will not cause this kind of permanent body damage is enough.

Three years ago, i bumrushed two robbers in my house and knocked them over the first floor balcony. Their fall was broken by the roof visor.

This is how they would have been posing like victims.

The boys career in crime has hopefully been cut short

Cutting his hand was very unnecessary. This can never be seen as self defense because whatever force used in self defense must equate the initial attack in this case he wasn't armed, he should have simply struck him...Only in Delta sha

This is just so sad and excessive.

I would never be able to live with myself if I had done this to someone for ordinary stealing

The man should arrested too

When do we start cutting our thieving polithievians'' hands? They deserve this type of punishment.
No No. For polithieves I suggest cutting their blokos so they will not bring forth other pikin thieves to succeed them in continuing the national damage inflicted upon Nigerians.

My brother, please don't say this. That boy deserves it as well as other heartless thieves. Phone thieves are the worst form of thieves existing cos they know that the phone is more valuable than the price to the owner. There will be documents, pictures contacts, and all in the phone, yet they have no iota of pity when wiping it all off. From my experience, i fully endorse such traleatment to heartless thieves
I can understand your personal experience. but, you should learn to back up documents, contacts and all things you consider valuable. I personally have an old school beast desktop with just to back up things at home so the laptops and phones remains just what they are. I also cloud files and documents so in case all goes to hell, I can access those ones from anywhere and with any device. These are the little one needs to simplify existence. I'm always careful and try to out think dangers and the best cutting edge response to them. Even if I'm stopped and my phones are demanded at GUN point will hand it over knowing it's only just a phone but if like 3 to 4 men without guns, then all my trainings in combat self defence will be put to test just for pride.
