Siasia fires Monday deadline for Olympic team invitees

Coach Samson Siasia has warned any of the players from the domestic league called up for a training camp for the Rio Olympics has till Monday to report or else stay away.

Speaking after the team's training session at the practice pitch of the Abuja National Stadium, Siasia said he does not want to make the mistake of the past when players who had been penciled down by the coaches were not available when needed.

“I want to work with only the players on ground, and to get them to the shape I want,” Siasia reiterated.

The team are billed to feature in the invitational Toulon Football Festival in France next month as part of their preparations for the Rio Olympics.

On the issue of other teams in Nigeria’s Group B already announcing plans to include very experienced over-aged players, the U-23 gaffer said the technical crew and the players are not scared of any individual player, but would rather bother about the quality of opposition at the Olympics’ football event.

“Yes, I have read of plans by Sweden to include someone like Zlatan Ibramovich as one of their over –aged players for the Games.

Good for them, but as far as we are concerned, there is nothing like fear. For us, we are trying to put up a team, and that will determine which players we are going to bring. We have played against players of stronger calibre than Zlatan. We have played against Lionel Messi and Di Maria and others.

“We would rather think of the fact that they have a strong team tha‎t will play against us, and not individual players. I don't want to jump around and start mentioning names, and later if those players are not available, we would be disappointed. So, I have to be sure of what I am doing and when that time comes we will release the names."

Siasia dreams to meet Brazil in Rio Olympics final

Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has revealed his dream is to come up against hosts Brazil in the final of the Rio Olympics in August.

Both teams clashed at Atlanta ’96 with the South Americans winning in the group stage, before Nigeria stunned them in the semi-finals.

The teams again clashed last month in a friendly in Brazil with Nigeria again winning 1-0.
Siasia was at the Rio Olympics draw recently and he said his thoughts of another clash with the Samba Stars came by when he stood by Brazil coach Dunga.

He said he smiled and stood near the Brazil after the draw at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

“I told myself this is the man I would be playing against in the final match!” he revealed.

Crewe boss praises Nigerian youngster Daniel Udoh

Daniel Udoh

Crewe Alexandra manager James Collins has showered encomium on unknown Nigeria youngster Daniel Udoh.

Collins said the player signed from Ilkeston has shown he has qualities to make the team stronger.

“Danny has a great work ethic and he has a good leap on him. He is prepared to have that contact with other players and he is determined to do well,” Collins.

“When you sign the players from non-league they are grateful for the opportunity and they want to impress. He is more streetwise than our own Academy players and hopefully that competitiveness will rub off on some of our players.

“We develop more technical players here and hopefully some of the work we will do will rub off on him.

“I am sure he would have been surprised to have gone straight into the team but he is getting valuable game time and it should aid his development by getting the experience.”

The 19-year-old Udoh has played for Stevenage Academy, Kidderminster Harriers, Worcester City, Wingate & Finchley and Grays Athletic.

His deal with Crewe Alexandra is till June 2018.

EXCLUSIVE: Siasia picks Mikel, Ighalo and Ahmed Musa for Rio

Mikel and Ahmed Musa are set to feature at the Rio Olympics in August

by Samm Audu

AfricanFootball.com can exclusively reveal the three over-aged players coach Samson Siasia plans to take to the Rio Olympics in August – Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi, Watford striker Odion Ighalo and Ahmed Musa from CSKA Moscow.

These are the only over-aged players on the 60-man provisional squad for the summer games, we have exclusively gathered.

This means the Olympics dreams of Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi have been dashed.

The Olympics allows for three players who are beyond the eligible age of 23 to feature.

Siasia himself reasoned Mikel, 28, is keen on playing at Rio after he missed out on Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The coach has not hidden his admiration for 26-year-old Ighalo, who he made captain for the 2009 FIFA U20 World Cup in Egypt.

He has also praised the striker’s form in front of goal even though he has struggled to score in recent weeks now for club and country.

Ahmed Musa though was a surprise choice after Siasia stripped him of the Super Eagles captaincy in March.

The CSKA Moscow flying winger looks set to quit the Russian club in the summer with the English Premier League a likely destination.

He has played at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, 2013 AFCON as well as the 2011 U20 World Cup.

Nigeria, whose Olympic team are better known as Dream Team VI, are drawn in Group B alongside Japan, Colombia and Sweden at the games, which begin on August 4.

Rio 2016: Siasia gives home baseds deadline, may offer Mikel Olympic spot

Head Coach of the Nigeria U-23 team, Samson Siasia has disclosed that any of the players invited from the domestic scene who fails to report to camp by Monday, 25th April should not bother coming to camp, as the technical crew will work with only players available to them and are willing to play at the Olympics.

Speaking after the team’s training session at the practice pitch of the Abuja National Stadium, Coach Siasia said he does not want to make the mistake of the past when players who had been penciled down by the coaching crew were not available when needed.

“I want to work with only the players on ground, and to get them to the shape I want,” Siasia reiterated.

So, I have to be sure of what I am doing and when that time comes we will release the names.”

On the issue of players like John Mikel Obi and Ogenyi Onazi showing interest in playing for Nigeria at the Olympics, Siasia remarked: “I guess that because Mikel missed out the last time, he wants to make up for it. Not only that, the last couple of games he has played for the Super Eagles, he has been playing very well, and if he wants to be part of the team, of course he is welcome, but as I said we have to look at the positions we really, really need people. We are not going to select players because they play for the Super Eagles or because they are still under the age bracket. They have to compete with those players who actually qualified the team for the Olympics.”

Coach Siasia confirmed that he has sent a provisional list of 60 players for the Games. According to him, “if your name is not on that list, then no Olympics for you. That’s why we put as many names as we can, we don’t know the Europe -based players whose clubs would release for the Games.”

I did prefer Ahmed Musa to Odion Ighalo. I would rather we pick Balogun, Onazi and Ahmed Musa.
Omeruo is not overage so we can still fall back to him.

The only reason I would ok Ahmed Musa in that team is bc Ahmed Musa just like Onazi belong to that generation(he is 23+). We need to carry them alone as we build a new Team.

I feel we need at least an over aged defender. I am not too comfortable with the young defenders I have seen so far in the U23 camp. U saw the team loosing 2-3 goals advantages at the CAF U23 tourney.

I think Siasia is paving way for his boys like Oduduwa, Mfreke, Amaefula and Amuzie to make it to Rio. Count me out with this crop of defenders.

I doubt the authenticity of this news because Siasia specifically said that the choice of the over aged players will be determined by the departments we do not have the players there i.e the areas we r lacking in talents, from this he won't be needing the likes Musa where we already have M. Simon, even Iwobi and success can play from the wings.
But if Siasia actually had made up his mind on the likes of Muas and Ighalo, then he has just wasted those 2 slots that should have been judiciously utilized in more delicate departments like the defense and the midfield departments.
Good luck to him,but I will b watching the Olympics with an open mind. The best choice for 3 over age players still remains Balogun,Onazi and Mikel.

It is funny when people try to make Mikel look like a useless player, when he is far from it.

If Mikel is as terrible as a lot of you make him (Not just this thread), how did he rake more man of the match performances than any Super Eagles player in the AFCON we won.

How come top respected coaches like Scolari, Mourinho, Benitez, Villas-Boas, Avram Grant, Ancelotti, kept using him.

He is among the most capped players in the history of Chelsea with over 350 appearances.

In the Super Eagles, he was maintained by different coaches.

Mikel have had solid games against top oppositions like Bayern Munich and Barcelona. He put in a good game against Manchester United in the FA Cup finals.

His wonderful performance against Spain remains in our minds.

So how can someone try to make it look as if Mikel is just a King in a blind midfield.

Michel Vonk (Coach of Sparta Rotterdam in January 2013) singled out Mikel Obi and Kenneth Omeruo for special mention. “Your number 10 (Mikel), is very good, creative and has good vision, then Omeruo, very good aerially and gives good cover to the keeper.

Unless we want to say all these coaches are wrong and they do not know what they are doing.

Chelsea is offering Mikel a knew contract and they rejected interests from Arsenal and Inter Milan. They can not all be wrong.

It never ceases to amaze me,yet the man(Mikel) will still go down in history as one of the greatest in Nigeria football.
Nigerians make it difficult for themselves to accept the fact that they actually love him.

bro you can mention my name instead of hiding behind the ''someone said'' statement

now regarding mikel i still stand by what i said that if nigeria had better midfield players at best he would be a squad player. yes he has put in inspired performances but he has put in so many poor to average performances that i have come to the conclusion as much as he would be a useful addition his omission wont be the end of the world. did we not win silver without him in beijing? i was also happy with his mvp performances in afcon 2013 but be honest did we all expect such from him based on showings in previous tournaments? i was so excited by his found new form that i thought he had turned the corner finally mikel is living up to his potential but the 2014 world cup brought me to a crashing reality that it was a false dawn. subsequent performances in our failed afcon qualifying campaigns have not done much to change my mind.

yes he has had a good club career mostly as a backup. when he's then trusted with a run in the first team he blows it from mourinho to ancelloti any time he displays his usual snail movement football they don't hesitate to bench him. hiddink that has been using him we all it's because matic has been terrible this year and mikel is the only decent backup and where is chelsea now? no fa cup, knocked out of champions league middle table in the league

in conclusion i again restate if we lack better options yes mikel is your go to guy but so far as we have just as technical much faster players i make bold to say we can do without him

Published: April 22, 2016

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Chelsea loanee Kenneth Omeruo has not been selected in Nigeria’s provisional squad list for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The 22-year-old had indicated his interest that he would love to represent the Nigeria U23s at the Olympic Games, and had been tipped make the roster, especially as he is within the age limit.

Dream Team VI coach Samson Siasia has drawn up a list of 60 players which has been sent to the Nigeria Football Federation and his name was missing from the roster.

Assuming Omeruo made the squad list for the competition and was given a run out in any of the matches, he would join a select group of players to have played in the five international tournaments sanctioned by Fifa.

The central defender represented the Golden Eaglets at the 2009 Fifa U17 World Cup before starring at the 2011 Fifa U20s, then played at the 2013 Confederations Cup and World Cup the following year.

Exclusive: Watford Star Ighalo Ruled Out Of Olympic Games,As Siasia Picks Mikel,Ahmed Musa &Efe Ambrose
Allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report that Watford striker Odion Ighalo will not be representing the Dream Team VI at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Ighalo was snubbed by Nigeria U23s manager Samson Siasia when he shortlisted 60 names for the competition in Brazil, meaning he has been totally ruled out of playing for the Dream Team, with the former Nantes striker stating that he will not select any player outside the provisional squad list sent to the Nigeria Football Federation.

Though Siasia earlier pronounced that Ighalo is being considered as one of the three players above the age limit after plundering goals aplenty for Watford in the Premier League, it is thought that the Hornets number 24 was never contacted by the coach regarding representing his team.

Celtic defender Efe Ambrose could win his second medal at the Olympic Games, having been named in the roster as one of three over-aged players, while this website can confirm that Chelsea star Obi Mikel and CSKA Moscow striker Ahmed Musa have been included as well.

At Atlanta 1996, Emmanuel Amuneke and Uche Okechukwu were the players above the age limit, Garba Lawal and Godwin Okpara were the experienced players in 2000 while Peter Odemwingie was the only player more than 23 years picked for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Oshaniwa bawo

Madu and Amuzie can do the job..

Oshaniwa bawo? And Madu and Amuzie are ok, right? Smh...A player with a world cup experience is a NO for you probably he is not of your tribe. I see logic. Amuzie that couldn't handle Egypt's Salah and Madu that plays in lowly-rated slovenian league compared with Oshaniwa that plays in mainstream europe for Hearts of Scotland. I see the level at which you watch football.

Kenneth Omeruo, Alex Iwobi, Leon Balogun should all be given chances in the Olympics...

Love him or hate him Cristiano Ronaldo is the best football player in the world. Watch him having a nice time with his son Cristiano Ronaldo jr.

What makes u think Ambrose is unfit?

Is Siasia unaware of Troost-Ekong of Haugesaund in Norway? If he doesn't consider this guy in his team and goes for 'slow-snail' Ambrose then I can confirm that the opinion many people have about him that he is full nepotism is valid. Isaac success should be given an opportunity as well. We have a very rich array of young guys that we may not necessarily need overage players for the tournament. Overage player we may need is Victor Moses if he can be persuaded to be more matured with his game.

bro you can mention my name instead of hiding behind the ''someone said'' statement

now regarding mikel i still stand by what i said that if nigeria had better midfield players at best he would be a squad player. yes he has put in inspired performances but he has put in so many poor to average performances that i have come to the conclusion as much as he would be a useful addition his omission wont be the end of the world. did we not win silver without him in beijing? i was also happy with his mvp performances in afcon 2013 but be honest did we all expect such from him based on showings in previous tournaments? i was so excited by his found new form that i thought he had turned the corner finally mikel is living up to his potential but the 2014 world cup brought me to a crashing reality that it was a false dawn. subsequent performances in our failed afcon qualifying campaigns have not done much to change my mind.

yes he has had a good club career mostly as a backup. when he's then trusted with a run in the first team he blows it from mourinho to ancelloti any time he displays his usual snail movement football they don't hesitate to bench him. hiddink that has been using him we all it's because matic has been terrible this year and mikel is the only decent backup and where is chelsea now? no fa cup, knocked out of champions league middle table in the league

in conclusion i again restate if we lack better options yes mikel is your go to guy but so far as we have just as technical much faster players i make bold to say we can do without him

First of all, you are wrong thinking I was targeting you. It was your comment that sparked my write up but I was not talking about you.

You have made some statements that showed that you are just writing just based on emotions.

How can one of the most capped players be a back up?

How can Mikel be a star in the AFCON we won when he had Mba, who was a clear bright light in the team and Onazi who was nothing but a beast at the AFCON.

We had a good midfield and Mikel did not shine in our midfield. He shone in the tournament. He outshone the likes of World class respected Midfielders like Seydou Keita and Yaya Toure.

Against Spain, he went against some of the best in football midfield play like Xavi and Iniesta and performed well.

Mikel benched Matic once and he is doing it again. Chelsea sold Matic and he might be on his way out.

All these snail talk and back pass you guys use is outdated. Watch Busquets play, watch Fernando play. These guys are slow. That did not stop top coaches and top clubs retaining them.

Most of the things you are writing, lacks facts. You can never get to 350 games in Chelsea by being a backup player.

It never ceases to amaze me,yet the man(Mikel) will still go down in history as one of the greatest in Nigeria football.
Nigerians make it difficult for themselves to accept the fact that they actually love him.

It baffles me.

Now chrisooblog makes it look as if I am targeting him. Some of them that Criticize Mikel forget that Abramovich's pocket is deep and he can buy most of the top players in the world.

At one time, Chelsea had the likes of, Ballack, Lampard, Essien in Chelsea and Mikel kept on starting games.

He made a statement like Mikel failed when given a chance? When? Is it when they won the Champions League or the FA Cup?

Pundits raved about Mikel's Champions League performance, is that a failure?

I wish he can back his points with instances. When Kashimawo Laloko found Mikel, he said, he found the best player in the country. Today, Mikel is one of the most decorated players in Nigerian football. It is not beans.

chrisooblog, football is deeper than the way you see it. It is more technical. There is what is called balance. If everyone runs forward and possess forward all the time, the team loses balance.

Players like Mikel, Busquets and Fernando bring this to the team.

Florentino Perez, President of Real Madrid criticicized Makalele of contributing little to Real Madrid. He later sold Makalele.

Later Zidane commented on the loss of Makalele. He called Makalele the engine of the team.

Florentino Perez has never cared too much for good old-fashioned defensive midfielders - just ask Claude Makelele.

The Frenchman was bombed out of the Santiago Bernabeu under a barrage of criticism from the Madrid president in 2003. "He wasn't a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres," Perez said. "Younger players will arrive who will ensure Makelele is forgotten."

Reports suggested Makelele, a key cog in two Liga triumphs and a Champions League success, felt undervalued and asked for a rise in his salary - to take him up to half of what star man Zinedine Zidane was earning. Perez did not oblige and instead opted to get rid. Chelsea took advantage and Makelele became a key part of a Premier League-winning side under Jose Mourinho.

In Madrid meanwhile, the former Celta man was missed. He did the dirty work, the work that goes unnoticed when Galacticos are scoring wonder goals at the other end. Zidane himself put it perfectly after David Beckham came in shortly after Makelele's departure: "Why put another layer of gold on paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?".

chrisooblog might not like Mikel's play but a lot of coaches have shown he is a priceless jewel. His work gets unnoticed because a lot of people value only forward play. Mikel's medals is a testament of his greatness and importance.

We will not miss Makélelé. His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and ninety percent of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways... Florentino Perez (Real Madrid's President)

This is the same criticism Mikel gets but Zidane called Makalele the Engine of the team.

To be candid, Mikel is the only top player from the Super Eagles that is needed in the dream team. Every other so called overage player can be described with one word

AVERAGE!

Oga Siasia, it's not compulsory you take overage players along. Use the ones you have, pls don't discard that African-conquering team for some bunch of overrated so called foreign pros.

That was one of the mistakes Keshi made. Pls learn from it

African U23 winning Eagles team conceded goals. They hardly held on to their leads. We have good talents to make the squad but I feel we need to use the opening from the overage players to fill that role.

I say we use Mikel to sit deep and shield the defence.

Onazi to bring in work rate and mobility to the midfield. Just this time, he plays ahead of Mikel and his runs will not be a liability to us. Onazi has the pace to track back and he is a good tackler. This also solves the lack of tactical discipline Onazi's game.

Leon Balogun will offer experience and he can help the tactical arrangements of the team during set pieces and be the voice to organize the defence.

My son can decide for himself on Nigeria, says Dominic Iorfa

The English youth international has been linked to play for Dream Team VI at the Olympics and his father insists the decision is all his
Dominic Iorfa says only Dominic Iorfa jnr can decide whether or not to represent Nigeria U23 at the 2016 Olympics this summer, and insists that coach Samson Siasia also has a role to play.

The Wolves defender would be hoping to impress Gareth Southgate at the Toulon tournament in France, where Nigeria, South Africa, Japan, Mexico, Czechs Republic, England, Portugal and Colombia are expected to feature.

Iorfa who represented the Super Eagles wants his son to wear the green and white colours, but says the decision is down to the player himself.

“I want my boy to decide for himself and I am very sure he would like to play for Nigeria his father’s country,” Iorfa snr told Goal.

“But he has a very good opportunity to showcase himself in the colours of his adopted country England against the U- 23 national team coached by Samson Siasia.

“I think after that we can now talk on the future of my son. What I am after is for him to continue to improve as a football player.”

Should Nigeria feature at the 2016 Toulon tournament, it would afford coach Siasia the opportunity to acess his players ahead the 2016 Olympics Football billed for Rio.

Arsenal’s Iwobi warns Nigeria U23 against complacency

The Gunner looks forward to represent the country in Rio, and has warned that Dream Team’s group opponents are not pushovers

Alex Iwobi has warned Nigeria U23 against complacency when they begin their 2016 Olympics campaign in Brazil.

The Dream Team VI are pooled in Group B alongside Japan, Sweden and Colombia and the Arsenal forward believes Samson Siasia’s men will triumph with hard work and commitment.

"First, I would like to join the nation in commending coach Siasia for securing a ticket to the Rio Olympics Football Tournament,” Iwobi told Goal.

“It took a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifice on his part and we should not let his effort and the efforts of the officials and players to be in vain.

“If I am invited to be part of the Olympic; I assure fellow Nigerians that I will give my best. I am a Nigerian by birth and have made it clear that I will always offer my services to the nation if and when called upon to do so.

“I remain grateful to England for the opportunities given me to play at youth level. However my decision has been made to give my services to Nigeria and there is no going back.”

“I have noticed with interest the group draws. The favourites for the Olympic gold medal are of course Brazil or Argentina.

However Nigeria has shown in the past that they are a nation to be reckoned with in Olympic football,” he continued.

“We have been drawn into a group which includes Sweden, Colombia and Japan. These are countries with different styles of football.

“A lot of fans would expect us to qualify easily from the group but I must warn that we should guard against complacency. It has been proved time and time again that there are no easy games especially in international football.

“We would need to concentrate and take the competition one game at a time. I have absolute faith and confidence in the coaching staff and NFF officials.

“With hard work, dedication and the special grace of God we shall surely make the Nation proud. I call upon all the fans to get behind the team and cheer the team to victory,” he concluded.

Nigeria will begin their campaign against Japan on August at the Amazonia Arena, Manaus.

Success injury blow for Granada

The striker faces a spell on the sidelines after sustaining fractured facial bones, and could miss a number of important games as a result

Granada have received some disturbing news on the injury front in the aftermath of José López’s side's 5-1 La Liga over Levante as forward Isaac Success has picked up a facial injury that will keep him out of action for several weeks.

The 20-year-old put the Nasrids ahead in the 25th minute, but was stretchered off in the 73rd minute after an unfortunate collision with teammate Adalberto Penaranda in his attempt to shoot a pass sent by El Arab in the goal area.

Granada medics confirmed that he has ‘multiple facial fractures in bones’ and would be examined by a maxillofacial specialist on Friday afternoon to determine the extent of damaged caused.

The injury means that Success will miss the upcoming La Liga game on Monday against Celta Vigo, while he's also likely to miss the home game against Las Palmas.

The Nigerian has made 30 La Liga appearances this term, scoring six goals in the process.
