DonBobes:Yes you are right. I guess it has changed now because a real soldier sees his compadre as a brother that he is willing to die for. Africa has a fundamental problem with ethnicizing everything: leadership, food, allocation, rulership, political affiliation even the army. Na wa for this region |

Heard differing versions mostly from idiots who possibly, cos of d suffering which d Nigerian madness has blighted them with & wont let them think straight and see thru d prism of objective analysis, d real motives being that of selflessness which is to liberate d southern region from d monstrous grip of d vermins from d north. Indeed from d recurring narratives we've heard overtime, one would allude to d fact things wouldv definitely changed for good if those guys pulled off. This can be deduced from d valiance of d characters involved, especially GO who with every chance of escape, stood his grounds. Like you said, the genius of their legendary exploits needs to be passed on to generations unborn. dfrost: |

The coup plotters underestimated the strength of IBB who had a good appraisal of the nature of power. Enough people in IBB's government were too loyal to him. He "blessed" every key actor in his government with "correct settlement"; he carried them along with inimitable cunning and guile. I'm not too sure about Nyiam's expertise as a coup planner. How do you hope to supplant an entrenched figure like IBB without compromising his key officers and field commanders. Simple verdict: Nyiam and co were brave but sloppy. |

DonBobes:The sheer Vulgarity of this write up tells me you are one fella against the North. It is amusing how Kano and Co were blamed for the deeds of Babangida a son of Niger. It tells you one thing- That Middlebelt of thing DID not AND Will Never Exist. The few misguided Northerners that followed the lame Colonel were disillusioned scions of the Lantang Mafia, a crime horde that was disbanded by IBB. RIP Col U K Bello. The true Hero of that Day! Rip General Sani Abacha- The Defence Minister and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staffs that wiped out the lame Coupists. Live Long Col Dangiwa Umar, A soldier in every way! Live Long General Ishaya Bamayi, your heroism is a thing of legend! Live Long General IBB, if nothing, you at least moved the FCT to where it should have been! Live Long Federal Republic Of Nigeria- The unbroken Maiden of Africa! ![]() |

blackfase:The Greatest Lie the lot of these Southerners tell themselves is that the North some how enslaved them. For the Information of your unlearned selves it may calm your frisked ways to know that when independence was first proposed in the 1950s, Northern Nigeria opted for secession! YES WE DID! It was your fore fathers- the AWOs, The Zikwes that convinced the Balewas to keep the North with the federation! If anything, I'll say they sold whatever stake you guys think you have in that framed up nation of your dreams! If anyone wants an Oduduwa or a Biafra they can go to somewhere else and build it, but there fathers made it abundantly clear that Nigeria was a united single entity. Now if you are one of the lesser few who talk about some 'true federalism' in a nation of regions, then I will kindly ask you to put all the blame for your woes on that sadist called Nzeagwu! If he and his deranged horde hadn't killed off teh first republic you'll still have Ibadan as your regional capital. As for me, I'm perfectly happy with a One Najeriya!!! ![]() |

Alaminalpha:Contrary to the emboldened part of your post, it was Zik and the easterners who convinced the North to stay within the union. In fact, they went as far as proposing a unitary system which they sought to push through with the constitutional conferences but the North and West objected to such a system. It is only interesting that their sons implemented a coup, killed people from other region but not theirs. They didn't stop there; they went as far as implementing the unitary system Azikwe & his band of easterners tried to push through in the conferences of the late 1950s. I have continued to wonder if the coup had anything to do with the pro-unitary leaning of the pre-independence eastern Nigeria. Let me also add that if Yoruba wants Oduduwa Republic today, we will get it, Ilorin will be taken along and the North will NOT, again NOT do anything about it. The brain power in the West is what the North is still dreaming of catching up to. Breaking Nigeria into bits will happen without a bullet being fired if the West wants it to break. Yoruba is not Igbo; we play differently abeg. Thank you. |

naptu2:so we get intellectual grandpa like you on Nairaland? You know I'd love to read your experience as at that time. were you gripped with fear or filled with ecstasy of experiencing live Rambo movie with your korokoro eyes? yet again, I salute you! |

Hmmm.. only if the coup was better planned. They obviously lacked the experience, support and expertise of experienced coup plotters. They were also in a haste and too emotional about it. How do you not make sure that a formidabIe officer like Abacha was either killed or held hostage? Guess it wasn't meant to be. Uncle Naptu, I greet you, Sir. |

Jaymaxxy:Which book, who wrote it? I was part of those jubilating that day. I was only against that speech and dividing Nigeria, maybe Okar saw tomorrow, he saw Boko Haram, Herdsmen, he saw bandits etc all from the North. |

Lifestone:-Oil Politics and Violence: Nigerian Military Coup Culture(Max Siollun). -Soldiers Of Fortune(The Buhari and Babangida Years-Max Siollun). -Soldiers Of Fortune(From Abacha to the Obasanjo Years- Max Siollun) Every politically conscious Nigerian should really read these books to get educated on Nigeria's politico-military histroy. The late Maj.Gideon Gwarza Orkar truly saw today's Nigeria from a distance. His fellow coupist were determined to change the griphold of the core northern hausa-fulani hegemonists on the Nigerian nation but failed prematurely hence paid the supreme price but the feudalists were really rattled by the coup. |

If you give Hausa people power they think they are God. We are too different from these people, that's the reason why I think it is a bad idea to be together. It either you are not Northern enough or Muslim enough. The whole reason why we are where we are today. |
