Do I was looking for a driver and found this young guy... He seemed very calm and cool headed so I took him on! We had a long chat about different driving scenarios, how he should always give space to cars all around him... Maintening the 2sec gap to the car in front... Not taking part in the invisible competition with Danfo and taxi drivers... All of that, this guy made it seem he was very conversant will all of it and suited my kind of driving style!

So I proceeded with the contract, took his LASDRI, drivers license and guarantor details all of which checked out.

OK now, drive us back from the island to the mainland (2010 avalon)

First sign of disaster... The guy tried to shift out of park without pressing the brake... No wahala I explained to him

Second sign of disaster... He shifted into neutral and tried to move... OK no wahala, maybe he only drove a manual, or he's not used to this kind of car... Corrected him

Third sign of disaster... He pulled of, slow speed and still managed to hit an opened door of a Ford edge and scratched my car in the process! And worse he wasn't going to stop!... Screamed at him to pull over, took the car from him and went to repark it so could access damage on both cars, Ford edge door was dented... My car was scratched and door handle dented!
Thankfully the owner of the Ford edge was sympathetic and didn't cause a problem... And he even joined my new driver to beg me not to be upset! They begged o... Saying I should access him after a week and if he damages the car, he'll personally fix it!

OK I calmed down told him to come back next day.

OK o dimple maneuver, reverse the car unto this small side street so we can be going... (maybe one car passing every 5 seconds)

Took the guy like 5mins to come out, on coming out, he reversed into and knocked over an oncoming Okada rider and passenger! Luckily they fell into the Bush and not the road so no injuries and damage to the bike! Small damage to my car!

I just told him to leave and never come back! What's worse... He then got out of the car with it in drive still in the middle of the road blocking both lanes of traffic, so I had to quickly get into the car and stop it from hitting another car and park it to one side to allow traffic through! He didn't even bother begging, he just left!

Someone with full license, LASDRI, and claimed 2years Lagos driving experience cannot even control a car? Abi what kind of nonsense is this?

I feel for you, Monty. The average Nigerian is a poor driver. No sense of direction or judgement. They are the same here, driving like maniacs.

They don't deserve to hold a Driver's License, not even a fake Nigerian one obtained through the "back door" without taking lessons from a qualified ADI, or being tested by a qualified examiner.

He might be nervous.

No, he's a bad driver. A decent driver MUST be confident, without being cocky. A nervous driver is useless. A split decision could make the difference between living or dying.

This guy was worse than useless.

sad story, next time use a smal cheap car (rio, yaris, picanto) to test a driver. Hope you are comprehensively insured?

@Siena the above generalization is faulty. In as much as I agree there are poor drivers in Nigeria, many are still very good drivers. The person he tested is not a driver but an impending accident waiting to happen. His possession of a DL just exposed the porous nature of obtaining a driver's license in Nigeria & the leadership inept inherent in our system.

Those errors he pointed out as made by the driver are too obvious to be made by a driver. The issue of nervousness should not arise. I don't know how @montyng found him & decided to test him as a driver. In Nigeria, people who have no idea what a steering wheel is have drivers' license. This is part of the corruption that will be eliminated when we have the right & good leadership in strategic positions.

This also suffice it to say that there are numerous ways to find a driver not by possession of a driver's license.

There are good drivers in Nigeria. Moreover, poor drivers exist everywhere in the world including Nigeria.

There are bad drivers everywhere in the world, agreed.

But this is about Nigeria, not the rest of the world. A country where a Driver's License is issued despite the individual having never even been in possession of an ignition key. These are the same "drivers" who would go on to kill and maim pedestrians and other motorists. There are some good, but the bad eggs are a modern day means of keeping the population down.

This is why I stated "the average Nigerian", unless you missed that part of my original post?

Sure, I didn't miss it. If your use of average underscores 'ordinary' then that's fine.

Meanwhile, the indiscriminate issuance of license to just anyone without recourse to the persons actual ability to drive & understand rules thereof is a major challenge facing road users in this part of the world.

The man tested by @montyng is just one of those who obtained DL with no driving knowledge. The test ought to have ended with the first overt mistake.
Re: I Found This Professional Driver... by MontyNG(m): 4:07pm On May 01, 2016
What's even more disturbing is he had a LASDRI card! Which I was informed that all "professional drivers" must have otherwise they could be subject to arrest by the authorities.
This LASDRI card is supposed to not only test a driver's skill and knowledge of the road, but also their eye sight (most drivers are actually half blind).
Re: I Found This Professional Driver... by Raymie(m): 4:45pm On May 01, 2016
IMO, I'd suggest you put up his name, and features (no photos) so he doesn't go out getting another driving job. Even baby sis who still can't drive properly won't drive as this.

Something is wrong somewhere. He failed the first time and you try him again, and again you said he had two professional licence.

I am sorry but i don't buy this your story.

I doubt if Someone looking for a job to sustain himself will shell out 10k+ to acquire the licence hs not qualified to.

Yes I tried him again and again and again! Why? ... Because he seemed cool headed... And I guess I'm a really nice person that likes to give benefit of the doubt!

My own 'nice person' will disappear the moment he committed the first blunder! I hate dents on my car.

Forget the 'credentials'. I have seen a deaf and dumb with a driver's license. If I search diligently, I may find a blind with one! Road worthiness is issued without the officials even sighting the vehicle.

You are indeed a man of inexhaustible virtue. I dey look for work o.

Na wa! All in one day? Count yourself lucky that this happened before hitting the express (if he would have managed to drag the vehicle there).
