10. You don't "ask for", you ask after a person. You can ask for things like pencil, book, handouts but you ask after a human being
That's a typo error.

Guy, looking for someone is very correct please. You can look for a person in a crowded place.
You search for someone one, people or things.

You look at things or people.

When you look. You stare at a particular direction.

When you search, you try to find something by seeking for it thoroughly and carefully.

You are wrong! 'Yet' is a conjunction while 'still', in the context it has been used, can still serve its purpose because it emphasizes something. Do a thorough ground work before you claim chief of mistake detectors!

Now, take a look at this: 'I was hot and exhausted BUT I STILL finished the marathon'. Does it mean because 'BUT' that happens to be a conjunction is in the sentence so we should throw away the 'STILL'?
Thanks for this. I was about asking her what 'comma' stands for?

Very educative. That #10 though. . . Virtually everyone is guilty of it. We have at one point or another 'looked for' someone who was not lost.

Graduates don't go to university or polytechnic to learn how to speak good english. This is pure african mentality, many indians guru out there went to the best Universities and can't even speak good English but they work in reputable organizations all over the world. You want to know why? It's because spoken language doesn't matter but how well you can contribute to an organization or the world at large.
my dear spoken language matters alot. It depends on your career. You cant tell a presenter or public speaker that spoken language doesnt matter.

I know even educated people commit grammatical blunders sometimes but there are grammatical blunders that are just so outrageous and shameful at the same time, when they come right out of the mouths of supposed 'graduates' from tertiary institutions!

If you have been guilty of the following as regard spoken English, then you have clearly moved from being a 'Half-baked' graduate to a 'Quarter-baked' graduate!!! grin grin

1) 'You are smarting'...I heard a guy at a plaza who claimed to be a graduate saying this! Gush! Being smart is very different from being fast or slick. By the way, there's no verb such as 'smarting' in English language which means the same thing as what this young man was trying to say! cool

.
.
.

Smarting is absolutely correct.

The word 'smart' does not only refer to having mental agility or something.

It also refers to

> a sharp, stinging pain.
> feeling upset and annoyed.

It's my guess that the guy you mistook for a quarter-baked graduate was actually referring to any of these other situations.

2) 'You are showing yourself'...just like the one above, how can someone be 'showing' himself/herself? So human being don turn movie? Na wa o!

3) 'Oya, come and go'...two opposite verbs. You are telling the person to come and at the same time, to go! grin Again, what's the meaning of 'Oya'?

4) 'My body is scratching me'...your body can only itch you and not scratch. You scratch when you use your fingers to stroke a surface roughly! Lol! grin

5) 'My phone is 'more' better than yours...this sentence can surely make you appear a 'quarter-bakie' wink You can't use two comparative adjectives in a sentence! We have good, better, best. When you compare two things, the middle one which is 'better' should be used so there's no need for 'more' which is also a comparative adjective but goes with 'than'. As in 'more than' cool

6) 'Did she went to the market'?...as absurd as this sentence is, I have seen many 'graduates' saying it! Two verbs with past tense form in the same sentence?

7) 'Ola, something is smelling. Can you hear it...ehen!!! 'HEAR'? English!!!

8. 'People has' or 'she have'...'has' is a singular auxiliary verb that goes with a singular subject while 'have' is a plural auxiliary verb that goes with a plural subject.

9) 'They takes people for granted'...this one is common on NL. A plural subject does not go with a singular verb and vice versa. 'Take' is plural and 'takes' is singular which goes with a singular subject as well. Take note of 'They' being a plural subject.

10) 'I am looking for Funmilayo'...you can't be looking for someone. Instead, say 'I am asking of Funmilayo'. You can only look for what is lost! It happens regularly when people go to check on others. We can only start looking for Funmilayo if she is declared missing! grin

I hope these help! We are all learning. It is only a foolish man that takes offence when he is corrected!

Good day!!! cool

You can add yours!

You are right on the other ones but on no 1 you are wrong, with all due respect. Smarting is not used in the context of being smart it is used generally in the context of going through an emotional process... perhaps hurtful feeling... smarting from a loss...this is not used in the context of being brilliant or smart in everyday sense of the word. Peace

That's right and it's not as if looking for someone is entirely wrong, it's just better to use search for, because that actually conveys a more appropriate capture of what you are going for.

I'm trying to show you the context in which some people use it. In pidgin, people freely say 'You dey smart oo!!!' It means you are biting more than you can chew! Does it mean it should still be correct grammatically when spoken in English? That's totally wrong!

In pdgin if you call me smart, it means you are calling me sharp and its correct because pidgin english has no rules and its generally understood.

When people say someone is 'smarting', does it mean they are talking about the skin? You need to be serious.

We are looking at the context in which the word is being used.

Minus the fact that you are being very unreasonable, you also jump to conclusions quickly. How very sure are you in ur eavesdropping that the context of usage had anything to do with mental capacity? For someone who preached that we learn, you are doing a very bad job of it. DesChyko was right. You are wrong. 'Smart' is a verb and not just an adjective, and it is synonymous with 'hurt', 'stinging pain' etc.

Rapmoney, how did you know what the young man who said "you are smarting" was trying to say? Maybe if you tell us what he was trying to say, we would have a better idea.

Smarting is a transitive verb.
