So now that we know what the spy uniform looks like. How are they spies? Besides how and why does a spy need uniform

Please read and research properly. SPY not Spy. SPY = SUPERNUMERARY not English definition of 'Spy'. It's explained in the text but I guess it's not so obvious. As the name implies, supernumerary policemen are not on the regular Nigeria Police register (super - numeral). That is, they are not usually recruited by the Nigeria Police establishment. Instead, they are requested and recruited by companies and other establishments, with the permission of Nigeria Police authorities, and by Law, as psuedo-private security operatives. They enjoy almost all the rights (within restricted jurisdiction) and protections available to officers of the public entity called 'the Nigeria Police'. For example, they can bear arms like the Nigeria Police (albeit within specified zones), so they cannot be completely referred to as equal to your common private security guards who cannot legally bear arms in Nigeria (again, by Law).

To cut through the chase, I believe SPY police were originally designed to be special security forces that protected oil installations and other assets of oil companies in Nigeria particularly around the Niger Delta. However, today, almost every T, D and H with some change in the bank can employ SPY police as his/her 'hand-bag carrier', driver, Oga's PA etc.) by simply applying to the Nigeria Police, paying some required fee and then buying uniforms for them. Yet, recall that they have no number on the Nigeria Police comprehensive register. So, most of the 'kill-and-go' atrocities you've heard of have been committed by the bad elements in this group. If them no get number, how you go locate them?

You understood, typical Africans who don't like to read anything are already commenting spy gibberish above.

Nope...He almost understood. SPY police can bear arms so they are not your 'University security guards'. The only difference from the Nigeria Police is that they are restricted to specified areas. I have commented in detail somewhere on this thread.

This makes no sense, what's the point of being a spy if you can be easily identified? I mean this is just so silly, the damn uniform got ''Spy'' stamped all over it. Nigeria is a fu#king joke.

The uniform says SPY and not S.P.Y. They can't even get that right.

Yes SPY not spy. Don't be a joke yourself. This is not a new concept in Nigeria. It's as old as oil installations in Nigeria.

Yet another one who refuses to read.

Can you read? Look up spy in the dictionary. If you want to abbreviate a word, you make use of ''.'' or a simple ''.'' at the end to indicate you want to make a word short. The uniform says SPY, not S.P.Y or SPY(e.g police Dept.) .

How is this waste of money and resources important?
Instead of focusing on massive police reform, yet these id*iots take pride in engaging in displaced priorities!

It's astonishing and shameful the way some Nigerians think and behave, and these are our so-called leaders!

Nigerian police is one of the worst in the world and it has not occurred to anyone to call for its reform. It needs to be totally disbanded and start over! Police in this country is a complete mess. We've criminals and thugs in uniform not police!

So much ignorance on this thread.

1) SPY policemen are not funded or paid by the government. They are funded by the organisation that they work for.

2) SPY policemen are not undercover agents. They are supernumerary policemen.

3) Nigerian policemen have not always worn black uniforms. They wore light blue uniforms until 1987.

The black uniforms make it more difficult for criminals to see them at night (just like the green uniforms of the army make it more difficult to see them in the jungle and the desert fatigues make it more difficult to see them in the desert.

I thought a SPY is meant to be a sort of UNDERCOVER agent. How come it's boldly identified on the uniform? Where are they gonna get protection when the attack comes?

What is supernumerary police? Never hard of that.
Do you mean they are temporary police unit ?
supplemental to regular? The OP need to be explicit, instead of using spy as in undercover.
Re: Arase Launches Police SPY Uniform (photos) by Amother4life: 6:27am On May 04, 2016
This is actually a good development. Most Nigerians actually are harassed by these idiots escorting bullion vans. They go on illegal duties at wedding and funeral ceremonies. Now with this uniform we can know who is who.

Supernumerary policemen

naptu2:

Many police forces around the world have auxiliary policemen (civilians who have been deputised/appointed to perform some police tasks). These auxiliary policemen are kind of like the reserve force of the police.

Organisations in Nigeria such as banks, oil companies, universities, etc that need police protection for their facilities/workers and organisations that want their security guards and drivers to have some police skills can apply to the Inspector General of Police or the Commissioner of police.

The organisations would nominate their staff and also state the nature of the facility/person that is to be protected and why they want police protection. The nominated employees would then undergo a 3 months course at the Police Training School, Ikeja (paid for by their organisation).

Supernumerary policemen are paid by their organisation and they are enrolled in the supernumerary police programme from month to month. They would need to give a month's notice before resigning from the supernumerary police programme.

The officers have the powers, privileges and immunities of a police officer within the area he is appointed. They are thus permitted to wear police uniforms.

For the records, S.P.Y does not mean spy (secret investigator). NO.

It stands for: SUPERNUMERARY POLICE Y...... (Na una sabi)
So in short ehn, they are just security men policing a big compound owned by a private company.

Just like the security men we have in Federal Universities. They have no powers to carry gun or do anyhow once they reach main road o.
