True. I mean how can a contractor use 6 inches block all through in a building with little concrete.

Your comment makes no technical sense...........in a framed structures, blocks serves as partitioning materials since they are not designed as load bearing ones.

So in this case 6inches block usuage isn't wrong

Bede2u:

Are u saying 9 inches will be better? I thought that if u want to reduce load, that 6 inches is usually better

9 inches are load bearing block, while 6 inches are partition blocks. So its better to use a load bearing block than a partition block. The hollow in the block makes it less heavy.

Nah! I didn't. It was just a one time experience.

Back then in school, one of my friend fell ill 1wk to exam and was admitted. And bn the closest to him I was tasked to help him write that paper, I was given some texts to read by his coursemates (which seem like Arabic to me at first), they were like I should try to get an 'E' or 'D' by any means.
But I promised them I'd shock em and surprisingly, I got the shocker! I made a narrow escape 'C' grin. While one fail and 2 got 'E'.

Talk about the sins we commit for our dear friends.

That day remains my biggest motivation in anything I do till today.

It's. True but at d same time Africa experience more rain and wind than Europe and america... if you have been to America how many rain do fall over there compare to Africa where we have heavy rains and winds

This is why it is advisable to build just a bungalow in Nigeria, it saves money and no matter how badly built, will not collapse. The problem with bungalow is it requires lots of land for adequate ventilation, I how ever prefer to build a bungalow that is cheap to build, safe and easy to maintain...

Well ignorant will be carried away, almost every month building collapse in China, you can compare d rains and winds we have here to Europe or America, our rain is much and heavy compare to them.
I could see some saying poverty, if our govt stop people from building house here won't you people start shouting, how many white even own a house talkless of building a house? All those houses were constructed by their govt none of them can afford to build a house.

More often than not builders pay little or no attention to the structural design of the building...

Some people prefer quack... I remember how a man hired a plasterer from Benin republic to continue a building that was started by a registered engineer and the plasterer faulted the position of a particular column and ordered it should be removed... As expected the building collapsed a few months later and he disappeared into thin air... Thank God no life was lost.

Quacks in the field makes it difficult for professionals to take the lead.
Yesterday, I saw a similar collapse mechanism at Obigbo in Oyigbo LGA of Rivers State and immediately corrected the Site Supervisor who doesn't know what it takes to handle the construction site.

You just needed to say something.

Well, you need to be informed that blocks (be it 6 or 9 inches) DO NOT BEAR LOADS in buildings. The strength of the foundation and the specification of the columns (pillars) are what largely determines how safe a building is. Blocks play no role in that aspect. They just form the walls and partitions.

I was amazed when I saw Egyptians laying foundation of a building in Egypt. A hole as big as a bungalow was opened then filled with iron rods, Cement and Granites.... The cement alone go reach Naija Engineers build 5 duplex.

Secondly I noticed their cement is about N350 per bag and once mixed it gets dried in not more than 30mins.

Please, can you share the link to the foundation of the building in Egypt you referred to? Thanks.

Phonefanatic:

Cement is just too expensive here. And I'm yet to know why we abandoned building with bricks.

That should be a thriving industry in that part of the East where they have red soil or Ogun state but the unfortunate thing is the moneybags are unthinking, they have 0 thinking capacity.

Or is it that bricks are expensive to make? Or that they're not good for building?

some client once they see architectural plan, they will say that they don't need structural drawing because they don't want to inolve the service of a structural engr. Not knowing that the architectural drawing is just for atheistic.

It is disheartening to note that, the extent of professional decay in this country is devastating. why? Inability of government to penalize those found guilty of unprofessional acts. Inability of government and other professional organizations to partner in building constructions. For instance, in construction of say, two storey building, the professionals and agencies needed on site are...The architect, civil engineer, building technologist, electrical and mechanical engr,a representative of an insurance compay etc . Unfortunately, here in Nigerian, a mason can pose as an engineer and supervises the construction of multi - storey buildings. Building of multi - storey buildings as mulch to do with professional approaches than empirical approach..

Your right my dear. bungalow is 100% better than living in a public compound or house. bungalow is just you and your family no intruder and no nonsense characters to pollute your children.

Sadly I don't have a photo I actually saw that around where I lived while I was in Egypt.
As for bricks I think people don't use it because they think it's expensive. It's far better than regular blocks and has more strength and durability.

I guess I have to ask Nairaland engineers why people don't make use of it. There are amazing house designs I saw in Egypt that I think could only be made with bricks.

Why Buildings Collapse In Africa?

Corruption!

They use inferior materials and inefficient labor in order to have enough money to loot!
Re: Five Reasons Why Buildings Collapse In Africa - BBC by Cribpark: 10:47am On May 06, 2016
Nigeria is one of the countries in the world with the most expensive cement price. We can relate with your Egypt experience. We had a first hand experience of home construction in Rwanda and the attention to details even from the artisans was so impressive.

In sane climes, government, wealthy people or estate managers build houses and citizens have to pay for mortgage.
What do you expect from an average person desiring to just own a cover called house over his head? He'll just make do with sometimes, the cheapest of materials.
And on this, many contractors are so greedy that after charging the right price they'll still cut corners on the materials.

Thanks for your contribution and making us all see that this isnt a time to deflect responsibility. It is time we all faced our issues objectively rather than comparing ourselves with those who share same plight.

Interestingly, the people who died in all the building collapse listed are all Africans and not BBC staff or Europeans, if they are pointing out our flaws on our behalf, then we should take heed

Don't bother about India......we have a serious problem with bad buildings here in Africa....and if this article makes African countries take serious action on building standards....then everyone here wins.

So much said as usual but who will bell the cat and indeed put an end to this preventable perennial menace that keep taking innocent lives? I though they said there used to be a death penalty or so for Engineers or Clients that are responsible for such collapses? 33 lives lost and still counting!!...Which way Africa?
