The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps on Thursday destroyed 13 illegal refineries in Rivers State.

This, according to the State Command of the NSCDC, was in line with its drive to eradicate the oil rich Niger Delta of oil theft, bunkering and other illegal activities.
The anti-vandal squad of the command had visited the illegal refining sites located in the creeks of B-Dere community in Gokana Local Government Area, setting ablaze seven illegal refineries.
It also advanced to Bolo Creek in Ogu/Bolo LGA where it burnt down six of the illegal refineries and oil dumps, bringing the total number to 13.
In the operation that lasted for about five hours at the heart of B-Dere/Bolo creeks, the team also destroyed four boats, two flying-boats and two mangala boats used by the vandals in their activities.
Earlier in the raid, some persons suspected to be operators of the illegal refineries at the visited sites had clashed with the NSCDC officers.

The gunmen had engaged the security operatives in a shootout before escaping for safety having been overpowered by the anti-vandal team, although no casualty was recorded.
Speaking to Southern City News after the operations, the Commandant of NSCDC Rivers State Command, Mrs. Helen Amakiri, said it located the illegal refineries through its intelligence gathering and reports.
Amakiri disclosed that the vandals had been stealing crude from oil pipelines in the area and illegally refining the products in the two creeks.

She noted that about 330,000 liters of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil and 250,000 crude oil were discovered and destroyed
The commandant, however, stressed that the government was losing much revenue to the activities of the vandals, adding that they (NSCDC) will not relent in their effort to stop oil theft.

“The officers of the NSCDC Rivers State were in B-Dere in Gokana LGA and Bolo Creek in Ogu/Bolo LGA and we destroyed 13 illegal refineries. From an intelligence report, we gathered that these refineries exist there.

“In today’s operations, about 330,000 litres of adulterated AGO and about 250,000 litres of crude oil were destroyed.

“The government is losing a lot. Definitely this crude oil is got from a burst pipeline. The money that is being wasted due to the activities of these vandals would have been used by the government for other needs of the country.

“We have the challenge of equipment, sophisticated weapons. Like today, there was a shootout between the vandals and our men. Although we have what we can face them with, but we need more.

“There was a shootout between the vandals and our men, but, no casualty was recorded. The shootout will not deter us from our activities, rather, it has boosted our morale,” Amakiri vowed.

Is there no way they can legalise these refinaries. Build them to standard?
Why do we still import fuel, when we can make local refinaries?
Or, will it have a negative effect on the economy?

The NSCDC only deludes themselves. For every "illegal refinery" destroyed, the kingpins have already made enough profits to establish more. It's all a wild goose chase. Simply introduce these folks to the modern ways of doing these things and Nigeria will be better for it. All this bravado will only cause more wahala

These one that we might be complaining of fuel scarcity. Why not seize it and use it to produce fuel. Sense sometimes we don't make use of.

How smart is this? As a government you lack the capacity to provide enough fuel, why not incoperate these private guys, regulate their activities and ensure safety standards, then tax them.

I hope they are arresting illegal gold miners in the north too. Because I recently watched a documentry of people openly minning illegally in the north.

penny wise, palm foolish
US arrests somebody in illegal production, they invest in that person as a potential, and put the person to good use.
Nigerian govt arrest u in illegal production, they destroy the one u produced, dismantle your factory and turn it to scrap and then put you into cell with thorough beating.
TRULY THERE WAS A COUNTRY.

you think the northern govt of Nigeria will allow them to make money.... During GEJ's time, he should have legalized and sponsored them... but he cared more about himself than the SS region.

Nigerian government is a disgrace. If locals can refine crude without sophiscated machineries, y not regulate their activities to the growth of our economy or u use them to revive the refineries we av.

the state govt should also invest the 13% they get into building state owned refineries. and also help legalize this "illegal" refineries... Since most of the time the FG is biased... their governors are just dull.... but GEJ really messed up his opportunity.

Their commander-in-general, I mean, Tompolo, needs to be arrested. Why is he faking hiding and the same time wreaking havoc on our pipelines? His Sun Tzu wisdom will not work!

It says something about just how inefficient Nigeria's government-owned refineries are, that small-time operators of "illegal" refineries should be making profits while the government-owned refineries can't even stay functioning for more than a few weeks at a time.

The sensible thing to do would be to completely deregulate the petroleum sector and allow private operators to build their own refineries, but Buhari is too economically illiterate to agree to anything that isn't state-owned and state-run - which is why we have the same government that can't provide fuel for its citizens busy burning "illegal" refineries that have been created to fill the gap.

What is wrong with successive govt taken up these refineries and empower these boys with current technologies instead of out-right destruction and burning and tomorrow we go over-sea to buy what we have in abundant?

How come a country well blessed with human resources do common things like foolish pple?
Is it because the Oil reserves are located in the list expect areas?
