This is no news, we have always known the south east is the most backward region in Nigeria. Even the North with the poverty is cleaner.

Take Nimbo community for instance, the whole town is made up of mud houses with no tarred road and Enugu happens to be the Capital of SE, HOW MUCH MORE THE HELL HOLE CALLED ONITCHA angry

An article talks about polution caused by rapid industralization and carbon emission but our so-called educated youths understood it as dirtiness .

Another Yoruba sentimental being.

One minute, Igbos are accused of being too tribal and only care about their follow Igbos or perceived friends, and the next, they a're accused of being unable to bridge divides and form a common front.

The truth is that Yorubas are obsessed with Ndiigbo, the exact reason they seldom sound rational whenever a matter have to do with Igbos.

Lmao @ Yorubas are obsessed with dirty people. You people on radio Biafra only talks about Yorubas. You blame your misfortunes on Yoruba. You'd even leave your land to live amongst Yorubas.

"Annual means are reported as provided in the primary sources, or an average of the cities' monitoring stations were used. In order to present air quality that is largely representative for human exposure, urban measurement characterized as urban background, residential areas, commercial and mixed areas were used. Stations characterized as particular ""hot spots"" or exclusively industrial areas were not included, unless they were contained in reported city means and could not be dissociated. This selection is in line with the aim of capturing representative values for human exposure. The location of hot spots, often measured for the purpose of capturing the cities' maximum values, and industrial areas, were deemed less likely to be representative for the mean exposure of a significant part of a city's population. ""Hot spots"" were either designated as such by the original reports, or were qualified as such due to their exceptional nature (e.g. exceptionally busy roads etc.). Omitting them may have lead to an underestimation of the mean air pollution levels of a city.

I tell you. On WHO site, they even stated that certain exclusion criteria were used. For instance they excluded areas with more than 16 million people which Lagos would fall into and also, they looked at the income level in those cities and categorized them based on low income, low middle income, middle income, high middle income and high income areas. Based on this, Lagos would be in a different league.

But the most important part is that the measurement was taken at locations they referred to as "hot spots" like the Niger bridge during high season.

Comments here show that Nigeria education is useless. Our youths are not learning anything in school.

I see a lot of folks here don't understand what the post is talking about. Being the most polluted city in the world doesn't generally denote dirtiness; rather,it is based on the particulate matters generated from the city which is in the air. These particulate matters come from sources like soots from vehicles, industries, construction activities,wood-burning etc - generally, industrialization. It's almost a problem with fast growing cities where a lot of industrial activities go on. Countries like China,Saudi Arabia etc have been battling with this for long. Air pollution poses health risks, which can in turn affect the economy of a place. The Nigerian cities affected should simply enact effective policies to mitigate against this, even as they continue with their industrial boom.

Professor, teach thyself and don't turn WHO's award upside-down. The assessement was based on objectivity and not sentimentalism and tribalism a la nigeria. Three SE cities are in the top 10 in the world and one of them tops the list.
Keep your fraudulent idea to yourself and be silent. We can read better than you think.

@OP,please give us the criteria for this rating and not just using 'polluted'. Is it noise pollution, environmental pollution, etc.

You don't just post something without write-ups to back your claims.

Until you edit your post and give us the bases of those ranking, your post remains null and void.

I can even see umuahia there and I hope it is not what am thinking?
If you have read the write-up, you would have seen the basis for the rankings

A foreigner's observations/ comments - onitsha and Nigeria at large
XIAN YORK
pulled from the post link

Corruption and a missing state lie at the heart of Onitsha's troubles with pollution.

I have passed through Onitsha twice, both times spending long periods in stationary traffic. Eighteen years ago Nigeria barely collected any form of taxation, it's road network was unmaintained, no-one drove at night for fear of attack. Public utilities were not paid for by any form of organised metering but by extortion carried out be collectors who arrived at a property, made a quick visual assessment of the owner's potential worth then demanded a sum they thought the owner might pay. When a road collapsed it stayed that way.

Onitsha is the meeting point of trade and trade routes in West Africa, a gridlock chaos of roads, markets, traders, buses, lorries, taxis, and pollution. In Europe we view buses and taxis as a way of reducing pollution. In Nigeria the lack of regulation, the ultimate free market so loved by the right, conspires to transform these modes of transportation as dirty as private cars. There was no effective time table that I could see for public transport. Internal flights took off when they were full and the same was true of mini-buses and taxis. Having paid a taxi driver to take us from Obosi to Lagos (because the internal flight in Enugu had failed to materialise at all), a friend and I traveled west towards the capital.

Approaching Onitsha, the taxi driver left the motorway and headed into the centre of Onitsha, a cacophony of gridlock mayhem. He eventually parked his car in the middle of a vast informal space that served as bus depot, taxi depot, market, car park. He got out of the car without saying a word and left us in the full heat of the day surrounded by tens of thousands of people milling around and the thick sweet pollution of thousands of mini-buses, lorries, and private cabs. This is West Africa's transport hub. No visible structure, though there certainly must be an informal one. No road network, just a vast open space that people drive across in whatever direction they choose ... very slowly. A sea of humanity parting this way and that to afford passage to fume coughing trundling taxis, coaches, lorries, and mini-buses.

We left once the driver had found two more people willing to pay to be taken to Lagos. We had already paid for all four spaces in the taxi. Didn't bother the driver, he had an opportunity to make more money and he was taking it. The new passengers didn't even say hello. We sat there pressed together, now obliged to carry our hand luggage on our knees for hours more as we headed back to the motorway and on towards the pollution of Lagos.

On the motorways of Nigeria you regularly passed the burned out shells of vehicles that didn't make it. They are sometimes half in and half out of the forest. You pass groups of people standing beside broken down vehicles no doubt praying that someone will pick them up before darkness falls. You get stopped by posses of soldiers demanding payment. You stop for nothing unless you see a weapon pointed at you. Sometimes the road has disappeared, whole motorways can tumble and slide down a hill, leaving a single lane to fight over where once there were four.

This is what a failed state is. No programme to maintain infrastructure, everyone simply getting what they can to make it through the day. What is true of roads is true of everything else. Build where you like, build as high as you like, no health & safety, no engineers to check the block of flats can take the three extra storeys being constructed on the roof. Telephone wires clumped on telegraph poles like candy floss on a stick.A raw scramble to survive and to make a profit. And millions of people trying to maintain their dignity and treat others as best as they can and enjoy life in spite of it all. This is why Onitsha is the most polluted city in Africa.

Until there is a functioning state there can be no functioning Nigeria.
nawao. u get time

I weep for the educational system in Nigeria, even people who should know better are obviously as ignorant and as others who have never seen the four walls of a school.

The purpose of education is to ignite curiosity in any individual. When I saw this information I decided to check the primary source on WHO website and this is what I found out:

1) Only 12 cities in Nigeria were selected for the research. This includes Aba, Abakiliki, Enugu, Nnewi, Onitsha Umuahia, Orlu, Arfikpo, Owerri, Ile-ife, Kaduna and Nsukka. The reason is that the reasearch data was collected from;

Ngele and Onwu (2015), Reseach Journal of Chemical Sciences, Measurements of Ambient Air Fine and Coarse Particulate Matter in ten South-East Nigerian cities.

2)Lagos was not included in the research

3) only one SW and one northern Nigeria city was incuded

4) There figures from Ile-ife and Kaduna were obtained from manuscripts which were still in preparation.

5)The figure for Ile- ife is 103 ug/m3 and was obtained from measurement taken at the university campus. Note that, a more industrial city Nnewi has 57ug/m3 obviously due to the station were measurement was taken.

6) The figure for kaduna was taken at 2 industrial stations, the reason they have the high 423 ug/m3

7) Onitsha figure was obtained in a location referred to as "hot spot". That is at Niger bridge during high season when there is usually gridlock on the bridge with fume from so many vehicles.

Once again, I maintain that Nigeria education is useless going by the comments here. Because if you can browse Nairaland, you can equally browse WHO website to get the facts.
