Naira Continues Freefall, Now N370/$ by Nobody: 11:04am On May 14, 2016
The sharp depreciation of the naira in the parallel market triggered by the deregulation of petrol importation continued yesterday, with the naira depreciating to N370 per dollar. The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA on Wednesday said that, with the deregulation of petrol importation, importers will henceforth be permitted to source for their foreign exchange requirements from secondary sources.

This triggered speculation and increased demand for the dollars in the parallel market on Thursday, halting the two-month exchange ratestability in the market. On Thursday the naira lost N7 naira to the dollar, as the exchange rate rose sharply to N334 per dollar from N320per dollar.

This persisted yesterday with the parallel market exchange rate rising to N370 per dollar, indicating N50 depreciation of the naira in two days. Saturday Vanguard investigation revealed that the sharp depreciation was driven by two factors, increased demand for dollars and hoarding in anticipation of further depreciation of the naira.

According to a BDC operator who spoke to Saturday Vanguard on condition of anonymity, “With the exchange rate going up, those who have dollars don’t want to sell, expecting the rate to rise further so as to maximise their returns.” Recall that the naira depreciated to N400 per dollar in February in the parallel market before retreating to N320 by the end of the month due to declining demand by importers.

According to President, Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, “The market has been stable all this while due to drastic reduction in import activities hence demand for dollars by importers reduced sharply.

Those who had bought dollars when the rate was high and used it to import were having difficulty selling their goods, hence those who are still importing have reduced. But the announcement yesterday has changed the whole thing.

More demand for dollars for petrol importation is expected in the market; meanwhile, there is no supply of dollar. Some people with dollar, especially those who bought when the exchange rate was high, feel the rate is too low for them to sell, hence they are withholding their dollars, waiting for the rate to go higher.”

Re: Naira Continues Freefall, Now N370/$ by oduastates:
Buhari fall my hand on this devaluation thing.

I was hoping that he would maintain his stance.
They accused him of running a command and control policy. Command and control was and is still exactly what Nigeria needs.
You can only do this with patriotic, competent and incorruptible Men whose job is to change the course Nigeria has been travelling for 60 years.
A lot of useless and socially unproductive / destructive activities happen in that country on a regular basis.
A lot of misplaced spending also takes place.
Nigeria has an economy similar to that of a dying super power or civilisation( service economy) . While the super still remembers how to make some stuffs, Nigeria makes absolutely nothing.
WE CANNOT EVEN BUILD OUR OWN ROADS.
if all the so called elites, after 60 years of independence, have not been able to build the capacity to construct our roads, then they are useless elites.

A new set of elites, preferably younger, patriotic, intelligent and competent, are urgently needed.
In order countries, when the elites start spending on art works $50,000 champagnes, $5 million parties, you know that it is time to increase the higher rate of tax.
It means that they are making easy money and are not paying optimum taxes.
Same thing goes for the materialistic masses.
Money hearted through serious hardwork is never wasted. It is more often than not, reinvested.
A lot of products we import in Nigeria can be made at home. Even with poor power supply.
I hope to hear from the textbook economist like
Pat Utomi, Ekwesili and the political rats who are constituting a nuisance online.
Nigeria cannot borrow, import, financialize or legalise herself into development. ( Banking, importation, union thuggery, and law seems to be the only profitable activities after churches and oil theft, politics ).
The state is broken. Nigeria failed to do anything with the oil money when it was worth something.
The real exchange value of the naira to the dollars lies between 450 and 1500. This is because Nigeria does not make most of what she consumes and hardly export anything.

Food for thought
I have always argue that payments due for previous bad behaviour is what Nigeria deserve. Crime and punishment. My stand remains as it was.
One good thing is the opportunity to make the desired corrections. I remember during the abacha regime, due to harsh realities.
Nigeria started making beverage, candles, nylon bags etc in their bedrooms. Civil servants were part time farmers
This is the attitude that will save Nigeria.
By the way.
WHO GAVE DOLLAR DEBIT CARDS TO NIGERIANS?
The persons whose idea it was to hand dollar debit cards to Nigerians ( a people who make nothing and only excel at shopping ) are same textbook quacks who were pressuring Buhari to devalue.
I am sure that in 99.9% of cases , the dollars were going in one direction only . Out of Nigeria.

What did they expect, dollars to sell at #298 just because they used that in their pricing templet? Even a kid knows that this would happen.

Where is Pat Utomi, Oby, Sanusi, and all of them now?

Whet the country with imported fuel they said . . .

At what cost?

The Naira is on a free fall as it is.

And by the time salaries are increased and budget monies released, and oil prices . . . it's just going to be anarchy!

So much for cosmetic fixes.

There are somethings you can't just 'short cut': excess liquidity, uninhibited smuggling, illegal bunkering, oil installation vandalism, functioning refineries, stable power supply, railway system, accountability, and e.t.c.

It is all coming to bite where it hurts most -- and we are so going to pay bitterly for our sins unless something out of the ordinary happens . . . like thinking outside the damn box.

meanwhile, conspiracy in Nigeria had Northerners taking up all oil wells while there partner in crime from west occupy all administrative positions in oil companies at the detriment of the owners, while at the same time using Ibadan Lagos propaganda houses to tell minorities in South that Igbos( whom have their own oil and other resources in their lands ) are after their oil. Thank God for social media and recent events in NigerDelta. God is alive and always there for Igbos.

One of my lecturers once said that most of Nigeria's intelligentsia are quacks who passed through school cramming the whole textbooks.
The first shock you get when you study overseas is the emphasis on research rather than testing.
Utomi, Ekwesili and Co put on the toga of being economist .I have never seen them build mathematical or economic models to back up most of the jargons they spit on radio and TV.
To put thing in perspective,

Ajaokuta steel was been 97% complete in 1982.
It is like a caterer having all the tools to make soup but yet cannot cook because it is not 100%.
If you can smelt iron and steel, you can make anything made of iron and steel.
At 90% complete, ajaokuta was capable of producing the components of power plants and 1000 ajaokutas.
The useless and unpatriotic Nigerian politicians economists and lawyers used economic arguments to answer what was an engineering and industrialisation question.
Abacha used ajaokuta to steal over $2 billion

"Nigerians currently own 52 per cent of the country’s 173 active oil blocs, while foreign oil companies own 48 per cent. He added that of the total of 388 oil blocks in the country, only 173 of them have been awarded to individuals and corporations, while 215 blocks were yet to be awarded. Broken further, of the 173 so far awarded, Nigerians owned 90 blocks while foreigners owned 83 blocks.

He, however, lamented that all the 90 blocks awarded to indigenous players account for only six per cent of the country’s total crude oil production, while the 83 awarded to foreign oil companies account for 94 per cent of the total output. Steering the hornets’ nest The Chairman, Senate Committee on Business and Rules, Senator Ita Enang, a forth night ago steered the hornets’ nest, when he alleged that 83 percent of Nigeria’s oil blocks were in the control of the northern region.

This led to a series of claims and counter claims by various groups in the different geographical regions in the country, including activists and non-governmental organisations, NGOs. Many even called for a review of oil block awards.

Even newspapers (not Vanguard) went agog with their own versions of the real oil block owners. However, DPR’s recent pronouncements on the issue that Nigerians own 80 oil bocks where foreigners had 83 have nullified every other previous pronouncements on the controversial oil blocks ownership, including the list of 77 oil blocks and their owners recently published by one of the dailies. Analysts are of the view that to end the controversy, the DPR should go a step further to publish the full list of the 173 oil blocks so far awarded, indicating who owned what, whether local or foreign.

buhari is yet to devalue and u are crying. Osibanjo only said they will review FG's frrex policy. Then, that the oil pump price of 145 was arrived at with 298 to 1 dollar doesn't mean we devalued. Marketers were asked to source for forex form secondary source, then to make sure they do not manipulate the system against oor masses, FG estimated marketers will get forex at 298( even though they may get it more than this) then pegged the price at 135 - 145. Hope u get my gist

There are genuine omoluabi's who never supported GEJ based purely on principles and are today withdrawing their support from Buhari based on today's perceptible reality.

Its so unfortunate that the acclaimed 'sophisticated' ones are in the majority and majority will always have their ways regardless of how foolish they are.
