State Of Niger-delta by MaziOmenuko: 4:03pm On Jun 01, 2016 |
I saw a thread this morning that was mischievously created to justify the recent activities of militants destroying oil installations in the Niger-Delta. https://www.nairaland.com/3139312/could-why-niger-delta-avengers Sadly, this thread was taken to the frontpage and gathered a lot of comments from peeps who are either myopic in their approach of matters, or grossly inept in their ability to make discerned conclusions. How on earth can a single picture represent the true state of a region? The said thread tried to paint Niger-Delta as an abandoned enclave of dirt, firth and polluted land. Those from the niger-delta will attest that this is a shambolic representation of the true state of Niger-Delta. Pictures 1 and 2 - Bonny Island

Are these the real pix of Niger-Delta or is someone trying to mischievously justify militancy? Picture 3 and 4: Ph and Bonny

Niger-Delta has always gotten preferential treatment when it comes to revenue disbursment in this country. They get 13% from all revenue acrued from oil to the country! 13% is a fair deal for any governor that is serious about developing his state. They have Ministry of Niger-delta Affairs. They have NDDC that builds projects only for Niger-Delta state. Picture 5 and 6: Uyo, Akwa Ibom State 1 Share

Only these set of people support NDA 1) my igbo brothers that are sympathetic to nnamdi Kanu, people that have been brainwashed that once we get Biafra we will have constant power supply, no tax, and good roads( but a Biafra that will be ruled by same leaders we have today) 2) the jobless Niger Delta youths who believe the northerns who own oil Wells (that are not even producing) are the reason they are poor 3) the PDP supporters that wants Buhari to fail by all means We know the real Niger Delta, Bayelsa have received over 2 trillion in the last 17 years, what can they show for it?? Same goes for Delta, minus ameachi and Akpabio that did small work those state were dead Cross river is far better than most state and receive the least among the Niger Delta states why?? They have sensible youths and government I see the NDA as a gift to correct the mistake we made by giving armesty ... we should never have done that. Nigeria shall remain one until a united African country is formed 5 Likes |

Apart from the Kaduna refinery, all other refineries in this country were cited at the Niger-Delta. the Kaduna refinery was cited at Kaduna to service the northern part of the country in order to cut cost of moving products to that region and also to refine heavy crude apart from the other 3 we had that was refining sweet crude. What exactly is your point? That Bonny Island and very few parts of the ND that is well structured and planned represents the entire area? These amazing looking spots represents less than 5% of the region. How many people from the ND live in such places? Fact is, most of the people of the ND are only aware these places exist, but have never even set eyes on them. 2 Likes |

Illegal refining, bunkering and pipeline vandalism are activities done by the niger-delta youths that pollute their own environment. Ironically, they come back to blame the FG and International Oil Companies for the pollution of their environment.

There are shanties and slums in almost every city of the country, how did a single picture represent the true state of Niger-Delta? Now, looking at the pix of Lagos and Bonny Island below, can we conclude that Lagos has been neglected over the years at the expense of the Niger-Delta which has been developed? Finally, The Niger-Delta scavengers are just a group of hoodlums, militants and thieves that has been empowered by some pained politicians and benefactors of past corrupt administration to take the govt attention off their crimes against the country. While the sponsors themselves are looking forward to accomplish this, the militants are eyeing a juicy pipeline protection contract and a presidential treatment as given to their predecessors in crime. They are not fighting for anyone's interest: The case of Asari Dokubo is still fresh in our minds: He, after pioneering the NDVF, got his settlement and invested in another country by building his university at Benin Republic. If he cares for Niger-Delta like he portrayed, why was his school not built in the region? If the Niger-Delta avengers are sincere in their quest, why can't they give the present government enough time first to see if it has the interest of the region at heart before picking up arms? The budget wasn't even signed yet and they picked up arms. I urge the Federal Government not to relent in its quest to extinguish these unscrupulous elements from Niger-Delta. The country is bigger than any set of people and must not be cowed or intimidated into signing off our scarce resources to a group of selfish parasites. All agitations must be tabled through the right means for dialogue and not through ultimatums. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Mazi J.O. - Omenuko Niger-Deltan, Nigerian. Absolute nonsense. For the past sixteen years, the Niger Delta (Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers) has generated over 400 billion dollars for the unitary government of Nigeria. The Niger Delta has been subjected to over thirty years of mental, spiritual, physical, sociopolitical and economic rape by the Northern military dictators. Peace, justice, freedom and equity are assets that trumps infrastructure. 1 Like |

Why is d clean up by PMB today if there were actually nothing bad or wrong with the current Niger delta? Stop peddling lies against these people. The current state of ND is as a result of Govt and IOC's neglect over the years. Who are u to call them bluff when the govt has already accepted their responsibilities? 1 Like |

Already some states and ethnic groups in the region have started saying that those avengers shouldn't be given the broad nomenclature of Niger Delta. Some political analysts from the region that are not Ijaw are now say the avengers represent the Ijaw of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states, not the BRACED as a whole as well as Ondo, Imo and Anambra states, that are part of the Niger Delta. |
