Strike Action: A Right Or Wrong Approach? Your Opinion by menzo4u(op): 10:12am On May 18, 2016
Strike (Industrial action) has been the only tool used by institutions to influence government's decisions for decades. But, looking at it closely, at this century, don't you think there ought to be a better approach to influecing government's decision other than the "strike" method?

Don't forget that strike actions go a long way in crippling economic activities in a country, and in the long run, those who still suffer the bounce-back negative effects are the masses.

For instance when ASUU goes on strike, whose children suffer the academic setback? We all know where the children of many of our leaders are schooling; either abroad or private universities.

Strike brings about no transport: they have their cars and private jets.
Strike brings about closure of hospitals; they have their personal doctors...

So it is still the masses that suffer it more...

What is your opinion? Are there any better approaches that can be used to influence government's decisions other than strike action?

Lalasticlala...let's hear what the people are saying.

Downing tools (strike) should be the last resort to resolving disputes and not the first action.

Unfortunately, the Nigerian Labour movements have bastardized this very potent tool to the extent that not many take them really serious when they call for strike.

On this particular fuel hike strike at hand, with all sincerity of purpose and patriotism, I say that the labour goofed big time.

We all know the current economic situation of the country: diminished foreign earnings from crude, very low reserves of dollars, with activities of the militant terrorists, Nigeria is possibly at her wors stage in many decades. Where does the Labour expect the govt to get the money to pay subsidy for? Subsidy that doesn't really get to the common man?

Why not have series of marathon meetings with the government and allow subsidy removal but use the opportunity to press for immediate implementation of some palliatives? Why not seize the opportunity to press for salary increment of FG workers? Why not use the opportunity to fight for state workers being owed numerous salaries by their respective state?

No matter how one dices it, NLC has failed to carefully choose its battle and failed Nigerians this time around.

Complicated in what sense? Don't let's look at this from the angle of politics.

Plenty alternatives. I answered that already. Strike action is usually the last resort when all other negotiations have failed.
