The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Audu Ogbeh, has announced plans by the Federal Government to withdraw subsidy for fertiliser procurement in Nigeria.
The Minister explained on Thursday at a forum in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital that the government’s decision would ensure the availability of fertiliser to farmers.

He said there were plans to ensure that farmers access loans at single digit rates to meet the growing demands for agricultural produce.

The Director of USAID Nigeria, Michael Harvey, and Director of IFDC West and North African Division, Robert Groot, suggested the increased lending to farmers.

They also called on the government to ensure that members of the private sector were involved in the distribution of fertiliser.

The Speakers noted that this would provide income for farmers and ensure food security for all.

Besides all of these suggestions, leaders in the West African region are also expected to back all policies that affects fertilizer production and distribution with action.

Why always 'making things available' is always the assurance given when subsidy is announced being removed when we know that the availability won't be different from when subsidy is on it!

In the last administration, fertilizer was soo available to farmers that they practiced all year cropping, Akinwumi Adesina did a fantastic job on that, so what's this one saying?
No jobs, no light, no fuel, no food yet they can import grass to feed cattle. Whoelse doesn't already agree that this government is confused?

FG's plan is to make sure that the farmers obtain loan at a single digit interest rate. If you are a grown man and still let party alliance to cloud your reasoning, you are taking a vital part of your life away. Government makes mistake. They are people like you with imperfections. You don't need to defend government just because the decision is coming from PDP or APC. You defend the masses because that is where you belong for now. That being said, I think this is a good decision by the government because I never trusted anything called subsidy. The real farmers that really need Fertilisers subsidy may not have seen the effect. Na niaja nah. Somebody that does not know the use of fertilisers would be in his office pocketing the money and issuing statement up and down. They should do this one without letting the populace know. The price of agricultural produces are already high, and hearing this plan can even spur them to cut the throat at once.

Food prices are gonna break through the sky. How bad can it get? Buhari is simply heaping more misery on you all. He wants to take us back to the days when thieves break into homes to steal pot of soup and other food items.
