I was hoping you wouldn't say this as I intentionally left it out of my last post. I am telling you that I had students who would reply me in Ibibio after I ask them questions, the scenario is this: Me, interpreters being the students who at least can communicate in passable to decent English and then the student. My question as well as the student's response goes through the interpreters everytime, sounds unbelievable isn't it?
As to this student, she even lives in a place where there are less English/Pidgin 'speakers' than A/Ibom meaning that her case is worse, now add two years during which I'm certain she did not speak the language (assuming she understands a little before her captivity) what do you think will happen? I lived in Enugu between 1995 and 1998, my sisters for a 2yrs and 8months; despite the fact that we were all born and had schooled in Lagos before we left, they had trouble speaking and understanding the language when they got back (they had never spoken English in their life before leaving Lagos other than the compulsory alphabet and spelling learnt in school, we speak Yoruba at home and at all times). The reason for this is that they spent a little more than two years speaking English/Pidgin in Enugu (82 Div., Abakpa Cantonment), even to our dad once they picked up the language. I fared better because I was already reading and writing in Yoruba, continued reading and writing and also took Yoruba in school which they did not. Now compare my sisters who were native speakers to this lady who probably understood a few words before her abduction and tell me if she would have fared any better.

The fault is not that of the students, it is as a result of one the most backward educational system currently in existence. I would have loved to create a thread where former NYSC members can share their experiences, but I don't know if it will get the kind of traction I'd like; believe me you'd be shocked at what you'll read, even in the so-called 'Educationally Advanced States'.

I'm yet to see such before. Now my question is, how did Amina without a jot of understanding or speaking English made it from Nursery to SS3. Were they taught all the subjects in Hausa language? How did she write her Junior WASSCE?

As for the examples with your sisters, that's understandable coz you said they were having trouble in speaking or understanding it not that they can't even speak or understand any sentence again in that language. Amina don't speak or understand a jot of English. It's strange to me.

Let me clarify my position on this matter, which is that while Amina was kidnapped, being among the WAEC-taking Chibok girls is hard to believe.

Here are two reasons why I think we should all ask real and factual questions.


1. According to the official report, Amina and her colleagues were in school to sit for physics WAEC exams. She was an SS III student. The Amina that was "rescued" can cannot speak in English. She is being translated even when English is spoken to her. Do we have a Hausa version of physics? Was she really a student? Or is she simply a fake?

2. Two years ago, someone whol looks exactly like Amina was paraded by the military with a bomb strapped around her, as one of the child suicide bomber Boko Haram had sent to cause havoc. Is this just a coincidence or is that girl really Amina 2 years younger that the Amina that resurfaced two years later as a rescued girl. Kindly examine the picture and make your conclusions. What are the odds in a country of 180 million people that two girls connected with Boko Haram would look exactly alike? (Refer to the pictures)

3. Think about it, in a rescue operation of about 200 girls, is it possible that just one can be rescued at a time? I understand they maybe in splinter groups, but the army rescuing just one is very very doubtful. Amina Ali was kidnapped no doubt, but was she even a student? Was she just rescued now. Why does she look exactly like the girl kidnapped by Boko Haram that was strapped with a bomb?

There have been so many scams with Boko Haram. From a few individuals stealing 2.1billion $ to Generals carting away millions of USD in private jets, to Mama Peace becoming a Nollywood sensation on her "there is God o" mantra. I just hope that this is not another scam.

WAEC Releases Results Of Abducted Chibok Girls

The results of the over 200 girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents from their school in Borno State where they were writing their West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on April 14 2014, are now out.

Nigeria’s Education Minister, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau made this known on Monday when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Education.

Shekarau, who was at a stakeholders meeting organised by the Committee, over the federal government’s directive to schools to resume on September 22 as against October 12 over the Ebola Virus Disease in the country, the ministry got wind of the result via a message from the WAEC.

He said the results are being studied before they will be released to the public.

According to Shekarau, this is because some of the students who were abducted had already written their examinations before they were abducted, while some wrote papers after the abduction of the girls.

Cramjones i served in the core north and i can tell u dat in ss3 dat i taught apart from some tivs dat understand quite OK d 90% of d Hausa'students don't even understand let alone speaking.during waec dey were copying from d board even some of d teachers na d same imagine d whole teachers including d principal couldn't spell yoghurt during agric practical exam.they spelt it as YOGOT

An average Hausa man dont really speak English they prefer their language to any other one. Even in my school sef, there are some lectures who can't really use Hausa to lecture but not that they are not good in the course o, or that they are not brilliant, but tell them they should reverse and lecture in Hausa language you will enjoy the lecture pass honeymoon sef

The Hausas in the educationally challenged regions have been coping and they will continue to cope. They have their means to test the understanding of the principles being thought.

Just as a Chinese man who can not speak English can understand physics principles or a German who can not speak or write in English can understand Chemical laws and theories.

So is your problem the educational challenges some Northern communities face or is your problem the fact that a girl kidnapped, tortured and raped is found?

There are northern sections that are educationally challenged and they do not operate educationally the way other sections do.

NYSC former members have verified that there are a lot of SS3 students in the North who can not speak English.

I am yet to see a concrete report that says Amina can not speak English at all. She is more comfortable in her native tongue.

If the army shows a hundred Aminas dead, does it prove that this girl is not Amina?

She was identified by members of her community who knew her. She talked in the market Square. The Vice Principal of the school described her as a quiet and humble girl.

Her mum is with her. Yet you are spreading what I do not understand.

FYI, none of your points would stand the most basic of practical logic.

1. The two girls in the photographs presented by you are different individuals - shocked that a human being would see them as the same...not even a White Slave Driver would see the two girls as the same!

2. That she could not speak English doesn't not disqualify her from being a WAEC candidate in a contemporary Nigerian government school. At the same time it doesn't stop her from being a classmate to some of the same Chibok girls now schooling here in the US ( refer to YouTube, SR & the BBC for a video of one of them addressing US congress women pls)

Now, this goes to all and sundry, the young woman's inability to communicate in English is nothing but a reflection of the decaded level of our educational system. And this is not just unique to a particular region or people or state. ALL OVER the federation students/ WAEC candidates like her can be found in any government institution - secondary or even tertiary.

Today, many would agree with me that ppl like Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the now Emir of Kano is one of the most articulate personalities in English language in the nation, but would it be possible to have some of his secondary school class mates who might be as poor in English language as the poor damsel Amina?
