Please, before you proceed, know that this post is not meant to put anybody's spirit down or to underrate anyone's course of study. It is an observation and it is basically limited to our society; it does not extend to the environment outside.

Every year, an army of young people seek to gain admission into the numerous universities spread across the country. One thing pertinent here, is the fact that many of these young people just want to get there, obtain whatever degree they can (irrespective of the class of degree) and rush to the labour market to sell whatever knowledge they feel they have obtained!!! People mostly think of working and earning money without thinking of 'career'. In the end, they reluctantly settle for UNDEREMPLOYMENT!!! When you don't have a clear career-path to grow in, you may find yourself in just anywhere, whether you like it or not cool Below are some courses in our universities that have slowly lost institutions that can support their career paths:

1) Political Science/Public Administration: Seriously speaking, you can hardly find a clear career path under these courses in Nigeria. Many people I personally know who studied these courses have started doing 'anything' to survive! Except you are studying for just knowledge or you have other businesses or line of interests to engage yourself in, these two courses are not what anyone should bank on as career in these present days. Apart from the education sector, you may not be able to grow your career in the few insitutions aligned to these courses if you are not 'connected'!!!

2) Microbiology: Most graduates of this course have become so frustrated in life to an extent where some of them have gotten trapped with teaching Biology in little mushroom private schools where they are paid 12,000 Naira monthly! grin You can hardly differentiate such schools from poultry farms! One Microbiologist asked me to assist her get placement in a media house. She told me that she liked working as a presenter in a radio station! The first thing that came to my mind is, 'Why didn't you study Mass Communication or Information Technology in the Ivory Tower?'

3) Parasitology and Entomology: I don't even know what to say at this junction! cool

4) Philosophy: Despite the fact that this subject gave birth to all other studies as we have been told, it is becoming more and more irrelevant as the days go by. Apart from teaching or lecturing...or in religious institutions, this course has no clear career path in Nigeria.

5) History & International Relations: If you are not an enterprising person, talented or already in a seperate business, banking on this course may spell doom for you! Your services are mostly needed in academic institutions.

6) Zoology: In a society where even endangered species of animals are flagrantly killed and posted on-line with so much impunity grin, I wonder what the future of zoologists would look like career-wise How many zoo or animal reserves do we have?

7) Archeology: I wonder what's up in your mind if you decide to study this course! We no longer have strong institutions that can support archeology which happens to be the study of ancient things! A graduate of Archeology might find himself/herself doing just 'anything' sooner than later wink

8. Religious Studies cool

9) Anthropology: Don't even think of establishing and growing a career in Nigeria with this!

10) Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa Education: In a society where our indigenous languages are gradually 'suffering' in the hands of our young ones, especially, in the cities, and the government and cultural institutions are doing almost nothing to correct it, I wonder what career path graduates of these courses would hope for, except in the academic world!

Before you criticize this post, consider the introduction of the post.

Don't be afraid that your life might END, instead ask yourself whether it would ever START!!!

Good day everyone!

It's this 'It doesn't matter' syndrome that has placed many graduates where they are today. A man who does things without purpose soon discovers what lies in stock for him.

I specifically included courses that I've personally seen clear cases. Though, Biochem goes with Microbiology. I didn't say they are not lucrative but finding the right career path in our society is difficult due to falling standards and absence of institutions that could support.

Good day everyone!

Have you ever written bank or O&G tests? They ask for a minimum of second class upper IN ANY FIELD. Pass the tests and interviews and see how your career blossoms.

What is important is make a good degree in any field and be able to defend the fact you went through a tertiary institution. The rest lies with God and being at the right place at the right time.

Don't limit yourself or others.

Just a suggestion.

There's a difference between growing ur career and finding a job. The insight u gave to us is finding a job and not growing ur career. Are u telling me that someone who studied archeology but works in the bank is growing his/her career? Except u are aiming for a career switch...then two things are involved! (1) U didn't have passion or any plan for the course u have studied or (2) U don't have passion or interest for ur banking job; u do it just to keep body and soul together.

Op. What do u understand by the word 'career'?
Do u mean a vocation for making money or a sustained pursue of personal interest?
I think we also have this mindset of going to school to learn how to make money, whereas i can opt for philosophy just for the knowledge whch to me holds my interest. I also want to do a pgd in economics cos i love the subject, not for making a career out of it.
You should advice accordingly, every body of knowledge is vital, even if not practiced, for the love of it by the learners.

A profession is different from a career. You join the bank and create a career path and grow in it. You may be sent to HR services for instance and you get certifications in HR and personnel related line. That is different from being a lawyer for instance.

A life example? The present minister for trade studied medicine and joined Arthur Andersen. He went on to grow in that field and thereafter set up African Capital Alliance from where he was called up to become a Minister. i did not see where he practised that profession.

You may have a profession but choose a different career path. You grow in your career path, it's not necessarily a factor of what you studied.

Kachikwu is a lawyer....

First, I must commend u for ur opinion. That's a very nice one! Now, I picked ur second definition of a career even if it's not complete. I believe our career should be able to impact on our lives and the people around us. What's the essence of being an Archeologist when you can't even utilize the knowledge to solve society's problem? It simply means there will no growth.

Even if a profession is different from a career as u have stated, u can hardly separate one from the other. The people you used as examples...was it yesterday they started their career? We are talking of our present day society. The ease at which those people got to where they are now cannot be compared with what the present graduates of today are facing career-wise. Now, let me give you an example. Do you think a graduate of Public Admin would find it difficult to grow his career about 3 decades ago compared to the way it is now? We train but we hardly create an enabling environment that can take care of the people being trained!

I dont know what u have made ur mind to know about archeology, but some people i know like collecting and storing artifacts in their house. You can so much love that subject that when u have a sponsor, u can undertake to take expeditions to places to collect materians for storage, maybe u can have a room for such display. Its worth somebody's interest. There was a time people were collecting postal stamps as a hobby and it became valuable for museums later in years. All these u can do for fun or past time while u survive thru a money making vocation.

you're hopelessly ignorant! angry I would have taken my time to properly educate you, but I can deduce from your postulations that teaching you would be a waste of time. yes! there are challenges facing microbiology in Nigeria, but to say there's no clear career path is total bunkum and balderdash!

the lady you spoke with was merely following what she believes to be her passion. there are a lot of people with first degrees in microbiology doing pretty well for themselves in other spheres of life and there's absolutely nothing wrong with seeking to switch career path after first degree.

Now, microbiologist can establish careers in the food/beverage industry, as food examiners/quality control analysts. they can also perform quality control functions in the pharmaceutical industry, be part of environmental monitoring, do research in universities or research institutes etc. the career opportunities are boundless. I seriously wonder how you arrive at the mind boggling conclusion that there's no clear career path. pls be informed, and desist from offending the sensibilities of well meaning people! angry thank you.

@OP, you just displayed your sheer ignorance by regarding entomology & parasitology as a discipline. There's no such course @ first degree level in any Nigerian university. They are areas of specialization under zoology at higher degree levels, and that tells you how broad zoology is. Zoology is not about wildlife or national park/forest reserves alone. There are many areas of specialization under zoology & many job prospects for zoology specialists in sane societies which take pride in their natural heritage and turn such to revenues. But for politics of appointments, zoology specialists should be gainfully employed in various sectors of our nation's economy e.g. NESREA, NNPC, NCAA, FAAN, NNPS, River Basin Development Authorities, agricultural research institutes, State & Federal ministries of environmen/ water resources (with their parastatals). I've seen NNPC adverts requesting The service of zoologists as Pollution Control Officer, but only those with specialization in hydrobiology. Zoologists who specialize in parasitology can work with Governmental & non-governmental health organizations. Those who specialize in conservation can work with the Nigerian National Park Service (NNPS), Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) & even work with multinational conservation organizations (e.g. WWF, UNEP, Birdlife International etc). In countries which take their environment with all The attention it deserves, zoology is one of the reigning courses. The whole world is crying of climate change which has taken its toll on our natural environment. UN and many serious governments are currently utilizing a vast amount of resources at their disposal to stem The tide of environmental decline by training of young and dynamic scientists with conservation bias in various courses such as zoology, botany, forestry etc.
The reason why it appears as if zoology doesn't look promising is because our governments/politicians would rather employ their friends & relations for positions that are primarily meant for zoologists. All the same, some zoologists still work in some of these places, particularly those who are passionate about the course.

Timolanki:
Apart from medicine, law, pharmacy, few engineering courses, health sciences n few other professional courses, every other course in Nigeria is tending towards useless...
How do you read the courses you mentioned without o'level subjects like maths, english, chemistry, physics, biology? You still need people to study these courses to come and teach them at o'level. Teaching is also a career.

This op just killed me. And its really funny.. grin I actually have a National Diploma in public administration and I recently applied political science for DE... And before opening this thread I had it at the back of my mind that I'll see either public administration or political science because this courses often time appear in threads like this.. And lo and behold tada! It was the first on the lot. cry
