Nigeria plans to initiate fresh moves to privatize its four ailing refineries before the end of this year, as it seeks to boost domestic fuel supply after abolishing payment of costly subsidy on imports, Platts reports.

Presidential aide Adeyemi Dipeolu said; “The federal government will set a time frame for the privatization of [state-owned] refineries before the end of this year.” “As part of the deregulation of the downstream oil and gas sector, the federal government will set a deadline for the country to be self-sufficient in refined petroleum products and become a net exporter of some,” Dipeolu added.

State oil firm Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC) owns and operates the four refineries, namely: the 125,000 b/d Warri refinery, the 110,000 b/d Kaduna plant and two other refineries at Port Harcourt with combined capacity of 210,000 b/d. Industry officials said the support the government received from the two powerful oil workers’ unions, NUPENG and PENGASSAN, in the recent removal of subsidy on imported petrol and the increase in fuel prices, bolstered the government’s confidence to launch a fresh bid to privatize the refineries.

The refinery should be a joint venture like the oil companies with the government owning about 60% while the private investor operates. In a sane clime, the general managers of those refineries that fail should have been sacked.

Government should get more serious with providing refined product for us the same way they are serious about the fiscalization of the oil and gas streams.

There is no much tax income here for them, but it will go a long way in building their image and PR.

I Concur..

Instead of Wealthy Niger Delta Men to form Voltron and buy out Port Harcourt and Eleme Refineries, They are busy sponsoring Militants to blow up pipelines.

Dangote by now would have sent scouts to go run checks on all the Refineries and do him a feasibility report on how long it would take him to recover his investment should he put some stacks on it. HE would have also informed his other rich Abokee Hommies too..

But Buhari said privatization has not epped PHCN to improve power supply as it was sold to PDP cronies, perhaps he wants to sell the refineries to APC cronies to balance out the action of PDP in the power sector?

Another round of distribution of our Common properties to Indimi, Atiku, Rilwan and Dangote them.
No one will remember the Owners of oil itself until a facility goes up in flames somewhere in the creek and the shameless parasites start shouting 'kill them'

If federal government wants to be sensitive with this auction, they need to find a way to cover some prominent men from Nigeria Delta, otherwise there will always be militancy down there. These Prominent men will take care of the militants, trust me.

Watch out how one Muhammed something will buy the refinery in Port Harcourt and expect the neighbourhood to watch over it for him for free.
But i bet my last money that the Refinery in Kaduna can never be bought by any one from South South or South East even if the person is Buhari's friend. Can we bet on it?
Some of you will think i am preaching disunity or something like that but the truth is that i am preaching the reality. You cant eat with your enemy if you don't have a long spoon.

You can't Kill Saro Wiwa, Jail Tompolo and Asari, give oil license to Atiku, Danjuma, Indimi etc and expect Peace. You must be daft to think the peace will last forever.
I am not from ND but every sensitive government do not use force to settle its internal problems.

With the way this NDA guys are going and the forceful approach the government is taking I doubt if investors will be willing to buy off the refineries!

They just announced it so that Dangote should be prepared to take over

I still don't understand why you establish refineries in the hinterland instead of a massive concentration of allied industries near the source of the raw materials.

Except for Dangote who knows how to maneuver the corruption in the system, any investor who buys these economic waste is mad considering the liabilities and security risks in getting the raw materials (crude) ie for Kaduna refinery

Best, govt has no business in handling all those critical infrastructures. But they should just try and manage it in such a way it want promote monopoly sha and it will in other way cause problems for the pipu in the future.

And when Goodluck/Yar'Adua tried to do so earlier what happened? Didn't these same APC noise makers instigate a nationwide noise making session and media attacks to thwart the move? Now Buhari is planning to do the same thing. What sort of nonsensical fraud has Nigeria entered into?

Really there is something wrong somewhere. First we heard they are planning to build Modular Refineries, now they want to privatize the world class Refineries that they have already.

Black man with too much wahala...Maybe it's time to get expatriates to run the Refineries for profit. Or possibly make a British man Petroleum minister.

Explore every possibility but whatever you do Biko don't sell our Refineries, hopefully one day we will get it right.

Ppl come on T.V and say complex and unrealistic jargons and claim they know it all...deregulation was the anthem during OBJs regime.. now privatization is the hymn.. Is building a refinery so complex. Government can't solve our problems coz Government is a problem.
