scientifically snakes are necessary evil. is good to kill them,on the other hand, you need the venom to treat snake bite, so if you kill all of them how do you get the venom?
simple!once you kill all of them which snake bite will the venom cure again.besides the snakes we are worried about are not the ones deep in the forest but close to our homes

It's one of the ways, in the culture of the igbos, of paying last respect to their loved one no matter how young the deceased is. People from other climes would naturally see this as courageous. RIP young gul!

If we kill them all, there'll be no need for the anti-venom

It's sad! Heard about it. She was asleep when it crawled into her room nd bit her. She shouted and her lodgemates came out, killed the snake and tied her hand... but it was worse when the first hospitals they visited didn't have an antidote for it. She died in the process

no dear. the reason I said scientifically, the venom is widely used in medicine for other therapy.

secondly you can never succeed in killing them all.. even if you can, its still a specie of animal that has right to life (na God create am)and should not be extinct

Nigeria. Bad stories every minute after the other. None of these deaths have closure regarding the root cause as to why it happened, contingency plans or how to avoid it for future occurrence rather every time it occurs I see exclamations like "Ewoo", "Chai", "God help them", ""Name checking comments".

The current and unborn generation living in Nigeria will suffer all these in abilities of the older generation.

Well be rest assured you cannot kill all the snakes no matter how hard you try, what you do is you educate your citizens on these animals, types and how to identify them, what to do when bitten, provide clinics with anti venoms in areas with high concentration of snakes, ensure our environment is not conducive for snakes to hide and breed ( I.e cutting of grasses, avoid clusters and introduce plants that repel snakes)..

This is NOT about forming oyibo as the person you quoted tend to believe, its simply devising an effective management of something you can NEVER get rid off, that's how you tackle issues.. Our forefathers have been killing them since time in memorial yet we still have snakes around us, so thinking you will wipe them out by killing them is an exercise in futility..

South Africa had a problem with Mambas, you know what they did, collected a few of them, kept them in captivity just for there venoms.. This meant they can develop anti venoms which were distributed to different clinics all over the country, once bitten, people are quickly rushed to hospitals/ clinics with anti venoms already waiting to be given..

What killed this girl wasn't just a snake bite, ( i bet it was the deadly Puff Adder that delivered the fatal bite, known as echi eteka/ avu ani in Igboland, this is probably the most deadly snake you will find in Enugu axis) but lack of program or strategy to manage it once it happened, May her soul RIP..

on point!

while reading the topic, I really thought of our lack of zoo keeping.. a lot of animal species that should be kept in zoos have either become endangered or are danger to humans.

Please can we leave out silly comments such as the one quoted and pay our respect.. Snakes use venoms to protect themselves and kill there prey, same way you will use your hands to fight when in danger or use a gun or spear to hunt for food.. enough of the hogwash abeg.

You need to repeat yourself and again and carefully think of what you said. "you need the venom to treat snake bite, so if you kill all of them how do you get the venom?". If you kill of them, will anyone ever bite you again in the first place?
