my female gsd (VICKY) is almost 8 months now and my vet told me she may be on her first heat anytime from 8 months.I got her from a friend that couldn't keep her when he gt her due to a marital disagreement over pet.they brought her from Jos @ 8wks.
pls how do I socialize her more to be more bold and not afraid when around lots of people or in crowded place.she's always shaky when in a crowded place and I understand that is FEAR.
also if u re around ABESAN ESTATE and u have a good stud.let me know in order to prepare her for second heat.tanx in advance.

Socialization can prevent fearfulness, but it cannot really cure it. Curing it requires a technique called desensitization and counterconditioning.

For your dog, this means repeatedly exposing her to lots of people and crowded places and then giving her lots of special treats that she goes crazy for before she starts getting fearful. For this to work, the special treats must be something fantastic like boiled liver or fried chicken with an irresistible smell strong enough to make her forget her fears. And you must deliver the treats before she starts getting fearful, because once she is in that fearful state she may not even be interested in eating. If you repeat this every day for a few weeks or months, she will improve.

Here is a more detailed guide: www.aspca.org/pet-care/virtual-pet-behaviorist/dog-behavior/desensitization-and-counterconditioning

You should consider not breeding your dog, though. If she was not unusually isolated or abused as a puppy, then her fearfulness could be genetic, and if it is, it will likely be passed on to some of her pups. German Shepherd Dogs are supposed to be confident and courageous, so I think fearfulness is a severe fault. In order to maintain the standard of a breed, it is necessary to avoid breeding dogs with faults. At the very least, you should delay her breeding until the desensitization and counterconditioning training starts working and she becomes very confident.

Lovely dog. Take her on long walks and introduce her to friends and other pets. Ignore her when she shows fear for crowd or any fear atall. Just act like u didn't see her and continue walking. I rili love ds dog. Good job

thanks for the comments.I DONT usually walk her long distance. most times her exercise is done within d walls of d compound. she only goes out once in a while.I took her to d field this morning she was really shaking to the extent she's trying to run off as people jogging are approaching. but after we spent like 30 mins on same spot and I keep pampering her the shaking and vibration surprisingly reduced but not total.I can only do DAT today because I'm off duty,I believed with time she'll overcome it.
@ oga SEUN DAT link is very helpful. million tanks to y' all.

Don't pamper her when shez scared. You are commending a bad behaviour if you do. Ignore her when shez shaking, and pat her after she stops or sits.

Just follow Seun's method or find a toy that your dog likes and crazy to get and use it to desentizise her. She is still very young for breeding though .

You were suppose to start socializing her from around 8 weeks, but the good thing is, it's never too late. You can start by letting her play around your friends and family in the once, once you see she's getting scared, go to her, then give her a treat, go back to your seat and call her if she doesn't come, let a friend or family to her and give her treat too, then go back and call her, keep doing this until when you call her while sitting with friends around she feels comfortable enough to come to you or any of your friends who call her. From there, begin to take her on long walks, you can take a walk out, then go to a crowded area and sit on a spot, let her watch people pass to and from, continue this constantly. Taking her to a place with busy vehicles moving to will help take away the fear. She's cute and I wish you all the best. However, I have a male for stud. You can contact me on 08023962820 for discussion
