Re: 8 Disgusting Habits Displayed By Nigerians When They Return From Abroad by NobleG1(m):
I base abroad and your list is foriegn to me.

The first thing I do whenever I arrive lagos airport is to visit a local resturant to eat egusi with stockfish and cow meat, then wash it down with fresh tombo (palmwine) before heading east.

Though I'm always careful with what eat because last time I came home, I ate Nkwobi and visited the toilet many times. I later realized they put something in it my stomach didn't like. But the next day I went to another joint and eat their Nkwobi and had no issue.

You can't spend many years in the West and expect your stomach to adjust to some local Nigerian foods immediately. It takes several visits to the toilet before the adjustment

I still meet my old friends who are still around, even though my mentality isn't the same as theirs, but we're still close.

I used to wear expensive stuff and drive expensive cars before, not to show off or anything. That was my lifestyle. But during the kidnapping crisis in Abia state, I decided to blend in by wearing normal Nigerian clothes, sold off all my flashy cars and gave one SUV to my friend in exchange for his old flat boot benz (I had to overhaul the engine and add AC)

After the blending in process, I felt as if I removed a large target sign from my back. I come home now unnoticed and without fear, blend in, enjoy my stay and slip away back to my base.

Nna you just yan correct!!!! No need to add or take away anything!
ronald4lif:
Bros, it's not about going to joints or say parting away with few thousands, no that amounts to nothing. Some of these friends don't even need those few thousands or drinks etc. They want and expect you to assist in stabilising them up with a business, which could run into a hundreds of thousands or million(s). That's the problem.

And even if you've got a few millions as a hustler you have other priorities than shortchanging yourself of such amount of money. Maybe you're saving to construct your own house even if it's a 3bed bungalow or planning to get married and need to prepare yourself with the challenges that comes with the union. No one will distance themselves from an old friend just coz of drinks or little stuff like that, it's more deeper than those stuff.

Who British/American accent epp. sad

While you've got some of your points aptly articulated some aren't exactly true. The thing is people always reads meaning to whatever thing an abroad returnee does or say. Everything you do and say is misconstrue by many as a display of flatulence and gasconade.

About the issue of restaurant, the food maybe delicious and yummy but the environment was untidy or the seller wasn't neat or the dishes on which the food were served. Some people take into cognisance the overall hygiene and neatness of an eatery before patronising one. When a bourgeoise of Nigeria refuses to patronise such eateries we find it normal but once it's someone resident abroad we perceive it as pomposity. It's not always so.

On the accent thing, I think Nigerians who have never been to the West are the ones who brandishes accent about more than abroad returnees. On personal observation, most ladies I interact with or accost at a public place all want to sound British/American in a bid to appear túsh. For their friends they are being impressive but for someone who can differentiate British accent from the fake ones they appear silly. True some from abroad also wants everyone who cares to know that they have got some British/American accent but residents of Nigeria are more culpable in such act.

Unless you've a place where you live and personally built, hotels are the most convenient for someone coming to spend few weeks. You want your privacy and don't want to live in your family abode coz you've got your own paroles to run. Nothing wrong with that.

One very sad thing most people abroad faces is the difficulty in putting up with old friends. This is so coz most of the time all they want from you is money and if you've got non to spare you tend to avoid them. And when you distance yourself from these old friends they think you're being proud coz life is treating you fine. No, you just think it's better to maintain a distance since you both can't gist and laugh over funny stuff like before without anyone being expectant or thinking you're obliged to help them.
I agree with your points except the "helping old friends", in my opinion, if youre sincere, i dont have it and make it clear and give them what you have if you do have at least a gift for them, but not come visiting and expect your old friends to make themselves available for you and take you here and there and all you have is Thank you, meanwhile he is at home suffering one thing or the other. So at least buy him a gift or books/ clothes for his kids or engage a laborer and assist physically in mending his leaking roof cos sometimes its not just money. case in point, i know a friend that assisted another friend in relocating the garbage and swamp at the back of his house that causes the mosquito breeding area.

Also, some of our cultures you might not want to do anymore, for example you might just want to bend over a little bit to greet and not the full "doballe" of the yorubas.

I TOTALLY disagree with you op.
For starters, the accent is never meant to intimidate anyone but something they have been used to.
On local dishes, many people coming home most often could hardly wait to taste the good old local delicacies.
Old friends most times feel uncomfortable in their midst except the few who have done well for themselves back here.
Working in a Country where your rights are respected and your worth valued gives one a sense of self worth. Often this is misinterpreted as pride or a feeling of arrogance..
On their love for bottled water, I think that hardly makes sense because many guys that live in Nigeria hardly drink nothing else
Be patient with them and you will understand their great joy in being with their own people.

@wristbangle
I agree with you 100%. It is a shame that some of our people opportuned to go outside the country (probably from abject poverty) quickly forget what life used to be back in those days and when they visit after a long time away from home (not telling the hardship they went through abroad washing dishes, dead bodies, doing security guards, driving cabs, etc), they start complaining about almost everything that they used to embrace before their departure. What a life? Human beings are interesting.I can guarantee you, these set of people are not even in the middle class in the western world they are coming from. They are struggling there living pay check to pay check, yet they come to 9ja and pretend to be the Lion king.
I come to 9ja (Ibadan) about 2 times a year.My favourite eatery is "Ino straight" oke Premier Mokola, Iya Ope and I drink a lot of palm wine instead of coke. All these stuff are natural. The goat meat and fish are killed daily, not frozen. The only thing I don't compromise on are my medications.I take my 1.Antimalarials, 2.Twinrix (Hepatitis A & B)Vaccines 3.Dukoral (Cholera oral vaccine), Vivotif (Typhoid oral vaccine).
Once all these are taken care of, I pack my baggage with my local "ankara" and 9ja here I come.I'm as free as the bird in the air.I eat & drink anything & go anywhere with no worries.I speak Ibadan dialect fluently with pride.Mind you, I'm not an Ibadan indegene, but I lived there for more than 20yrs before I moved to the States.
Let the wanna bees keep deceiving themselves and we will keep enjoying our lives.I know a guy on NL who is a typical example wanna bee Ibadan man.

Why won't they complain? huh huh grin grin

Is it a crime to complain? You can't compare the ease of life between Nigeria and countries like the U.S., whether you agree or not but don't get it twisted. We're Nigerians just as you are: we eat Nigerian foods, wear Nigerian clothing grin grin grin go to Nigerian parties and events, patronize Nigerian stores abroad, and even remit our hard earned $$$ to Nigeria grin. Just because a few find discomfort in Nigeria doesn't translate to "we ain't Nigerians". Hope you get my drift.

The day you go and LIVE in a developed country legally, pay taxes, enjoy basic amenities, where 96.9% of everything works, where people are still in touch with what makes them higher animals, become socially adapted to the way of life there...then and ONLY then...can you come and post such an erroneous piece...
First of, life as a blackman, emphatically as a Nigerian is terribly challenging, for any Nigerian to live in Europe or North America, critical to your survival is how quick you can adapt, shedding most if not all of the Nigerianess you have, which is a hard thing to do...especially if you're over 18...
Now after going through the unimaginable to become a globally civilized person, you think one or two visits to Nigeria is going to just switch a person back to Nigerian again right? Seriously?
This is the most complete response to this thread thus far.
