Greed and laziness of the northerners who have been in power for a period of eons now. They believe the oil in the nigerdelta belongs to them,they must dry it up before they allow for true federalism

I am on the side of true federalism, where the federating units has higher degree of houtonomy on their resources and only contribute agreed % of their income to the central purse.

Let's take for instance, a young boy that has been living on his father's benevolence and never imagine how life could be without his father.. Then all of a sudden the father passes on leaving the young boy without nothing cos bank has confiscated all that the man had.. Do you think the young boy will just fold his hands, watch hunger and starvation take his life? No my brother, he will learn to work and feed himself... Those states you mentioned are lazy today in terms generating revenue cos they know that FG dish out allocation for every month from oil money and nobody wants to look inward to development their capability.. Without free oil money, states like ebong and osun can still survive because they both have something they can fall back on and generate maximum revenue from it..

The fear of our leaders is simply that they would lose hold of money accruing from oil especially.

True federalism is good but i am sure the federal government's fear is that some regions might become too strong and may start planning secession.

We really need to conceptualise these various governmental organisations/formation..
Federalism simply means a system of government where power is shared between a strong centre and component states.this is opposed to a unitary system which excites total centralisation at the top(mostly suitable for small nations). Why dissecting or interpolating federalism,u shld try to draw a fine line between federalism and a confederal state..A confederal state has a weak centre and strong regions(E.g UN..Somalia to some extend;they recline to their five ethnic echelons).. Those people calling for true federalism and restructuring must not make the mistake of calling for a confederacy(giving more power to the regions)..this will inevitably lead or precipitate secession-one region develops more than others,the next instinct is to leave.In fact a confederacy is like having many states under on facade umbrella nation. I won't devote time to bemoaning the fallouts of an eventual break-up which confederacy will promote. Federalism helps promote cohesion,oneness and unity and at the same time,allow the regions/states to develop;to some extent..e.g.Lagos,Akwa Ibom etc. The main problem of this form of government is that since power is at the centre,it becomes a do-or-die affair;the winner takes all...anybody that controls the centre,becomes the big-man of his ethnic inclination- "ethnic Bigmanism",government of patronage and patrimonialism...There's nothing wrong with federalism,but the way we play it.
What we need is to choose between running an inclusive system or part ways(divide)..At some point,we'll have to answer this tough question..With inclusion,federalism is sustained,marginalisation is starved-off,progress is a fait accompli.

First and foremost, there is nothing like True Federalism in the real sense of it, you either have federalism or another system of government. Now,what i believe most people meant to say is Ideal federalism, though its noteworthy to asserts that federalism as systems takes into consideration the peculiarity of the people.

What I think people should clamor for is greater autonomy of the LG and States. Even if you consider the American, the Center is still more powerful than any other entity and that's an Ideal Federalism, but when the states and Lg's have more autonomy mostly over domestic security and resources they can formulate policies within the federal structure and pursue their individual growth and development without waiting for the central government.

However, I personally doubt if the so called Ideal federalism can work in Nigeria, only a few states will survive; nepotism, favoritism and patronage will ruin many states. For example south south governors will allocate oil wells to the friends and family who will not even bother to pay taxes to the government purse but pay money to the governors account. Tell me how will the states survive? Food for thought! I see only a few states like Lagos, Anambra, Edo e.t.c; because relatively this states are more less of an egalitarian societies wherein anyone can strive to make it to the top and achieve some level of success even if you are not born of a silver spoon or belong to the political/elite class.

Chief Money alone does not create Opportunities...You need the other factors of production! If money alone does, venture capitalist won't go about looking for where to put money.

True federalism will go along in solving numerous problem plaguing this country, from security, to power generation, to job creation and several other.
Look at the situation where fulani herds men are killing in Enugu or Benue and we are shouting Buhari who is in Abuja. Let localise the problem, let state security handle security of her people.
What about power generation, why must every power generated be sent to national grid and then redistributed to all state.
Also all this yeye governors that just sit and wait for federal allocation at the end every month, without thinking of what they can do to improve their state economy.

I can answer this with well researched figures.. Ok, Nigeria's GDP in 2010 is 369,062,000 billion dollar... So out of this figure, 19 northern states' contribution is 99,588,398 billion dollars.. So if you check 2006 census figures you'll see that the northern part of this country has higher population.. So you would expect a region with higher population would have higher GDP but reverse is the case.. Then again, you go back to how most of these northern states were created and ask..are they economic viable and sustainable should we practice true fiscal federalism The answer is a resounding NO

Dependence on easy oil money did. If the people of Osun had to farm n pay tax for the state govt to run, then they will never allow him borrow into their projected earning of 20 years time. They know that whether the work or remain lazy, their salary will be paid with oil earnings, and the oil earning wouldn't have gone round if not for our current federalism, so stop saying laziness bred laziness. The advantages are enormous as eddygourdo and erusen had earlier explained.
Imagine a situation where a state can generate some amount of electricity but can't used it for the benefit of its people because it's exclusively the FG'S prerogative,is that not insanity?
Imagine where a state has a very long span kilometers of road in its axis but can't construct it cos it's the FG road and if it's tarred, the FG will refuse to refund the money expended on such. These are critical issues where only true federalism would solve.
Imagine a governor is the chief security of his state, but can't choose it's security details and can't even caution the cp of police.
Only true federalism will curb this.
My only problem is that it will breed grade A level of corruption if there is no check n balance.
