Good day Claremont... can I ask for your help on how to extend my stay in the UK. I currently live in Italy but I came to the UK in 2011 and currently in the UK on a tier 4 student visa (3 years)which runs out in September. I would like to extend my stay in the UK by applying for a residence permit before my visa runs out. I'm really confused on how to go about this. I have a permanent resident card to live in Italy and have a partner who resides here with me in Bristol. We have been together for about 3 years. Should I apply for a residence card. Cheers

If you are married to her, and she is exercising her treaty rights in the UK, you don't have a problem. You have right of residence in the UK, and the EEA card which the Home Office grants is only a confirmation of such rights. Apply for it.

Hi Guys.....just wondering. I have a job offer in Watford and other invites for interview in both London and Northampton of which i am sure i would get the job. I have been googling cost of living ni watford and it appears to be on the high side especially rent.

Whoever that has good information about watford and northampton should provide.......I am just wondering which of them is a better city to settle in. I am tired of the current city where i live already so i am happy to move but deciding on where to move to is my challenge.

@Claremont, I don't mean to derail this thread. Just want to ask this here.
What are the chances of getting locum jobs for doctors in the UK. Assuming I scaled the PLAB1 and 2, could I settle into the UK system within two months. What about training posts? I know it is difficult for Non-UK/Non-EU doctors but what are the chances of getting in or at least, doing locum jobs that pay the rent.

I envy a friend of mine who works as a locum doctor in the NHS. He makes a good living earning more than permanently employed doctors doing the same jobs. I have often asked him why he prefers locum, he advised that locum is were the money is. This is someone who makes at least £60 per hour working 12 hour shifts 5 days a week. There was a time when I even considered going back to uni to do the accelerated 4 year medicine degree. To answer your question, there is virtually no unemployment for doctors in UK, and most locum agencies prefer non-UK doctors because they are hardworking and are ready to work unsociable hours.

@Olowo b thanks for the response bro. I can afford the security license but I just want to know the range of pay and what to expect for a start after spending over £400.if it's really worth it.
How long is the security license valid?

Movement of money has being a major problem. Plz how do i move cash or transfer without having to feel this forex problems so much from the secondary market.

Thanks.

@dynamitehimself, the security license is valid for 3 years. is it worth it? YES

I will give you 2 scenarios. please note, i am assuming you are coming for your masters.....

After you graduate

After your masters degree, you will normally have automatic 4 months visa but it is likely your program will finish even before the 1 year, so you may end up having 5 or 6 months instead of 4 months. Now this is the deal, i do not know how well you can hustle, but if you have a SIA badge, i will tell you to just do site security jobs which normally starts from 4pm or 4;30pm till 7:30am. The advantage is that you can also be doing cleaning job in the morning while also doing security job in the afternoon. Trust me when i say the site security job is the easiest job for a student. They are basically paying you to sit down and just do hourly patrols. The site will be fully secured and fenced. Even if you see thief, all you need to do is call the police. For here, if you see thief, you cannot beat him or shout.examples of sites you may work on are demolition jobs, construction of houses etc by law, they must have a security on site.

OR

During school

You can do security as a bouncer in clubs or pubs (this is more difficult but some people love it). You will work majorly on Fridays and Saturdays and will be getting at least 10 hours every weekend. club or pub bouncer jobs normally pays higher. They pay at least £9 ( i heard security officers in London collect even £13 per hour).

I am not telling you what i have not done or what i heard, i am telling you what i have done before and most people do it here (doing 2 jobs). Even while schooling, if you do site security job, it gives you the opportunity to read as you will be in a cabin with at least a heater and a microwave and of cos a generator. site security jobs normally pay minimum wage which is £7.2 currently.

Also, during christmas period, there are always jobs for security guys as they will always need you on christmas, new year etc. before i forget, any holiday here in UK, you will paid double. christmas and new year is double pay guaranteed.

Remember i told you to try and mix wit church members and people who have stayed longer in UK and are upright (please avoid people who have no future). The reason i told you is because you may also get cash side jobs as a security officer. That is all i can tell you on a public forum. When you get to UK, talk to people and hopefully, they will help you out.

Finally, you will make the money for your badge back within 1 month once you get a security job. Also, having the SIA badge will give you flexibility and allow you to be able to do 2 jobs. If you have the money, please go for it.

All the best bro.

Also i know a masters student (who has finished) , doing site security job. He works on Mondays, Fridays (4:30pm-8am) and Saturdays and Sundays (8pm-8am). After tax, he is making about £1,250 on this job and he is also doing a cleaning job Monday to Friday (8-2) where he gets at least another guaranteed £700 after tax. There is no way he will spend more than £900 as student monthly (He stays in Scotland). Sso he can at lest save £1000 for the 5 months he has left on his visa while he still applies for jobs.

Even if he does not get a job, if he leaves UK, he will have at least £5000 he is taking back home with him which is not bad to settle down with in naija. the point is, i hope you can hustle well and also read well to get a good result (that is the primary reason you are in UK).

I can go on and on but i will stop here.

Generally, any temp/contractual job pays like crazy especially if you're in a high sought after profession. UK might be many things but am not leaving here soon with what am getting grin

Should be paying early next week tho via the Form A
What rate did they charge you for the Form A?

Was charged 197.5 but it won't be so anymore cos of the new flexible forex market price. The new price will be determined by monday but certainly not 197.

Lesson 2: Guaranteed British Citizenship for those with Student visas.

I know this sounds hard to believe at first, and might even sound dubious to some people. What if I told you that there is a way for a Nigerian student (or any student from the commonwealth) to get British citizenship after 5 years of living in the UK, or indefinite stay after just 1 year of living in the UK?! It's not a hidden secret, it's something that a few students have exploited and they are enjoying the fruits of it today in their respective careers. It's not for everyone though, and I understand the mentality of some Nigerians who would rather avoid it.

JOIN THE BRITISH ARMY
. A few jobs have been opened up to commonwealth applicants, and the Army is currently bending over backwards to recruit people from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Benefits:
1. As soon as you join, you get an ''exempt from immigration control'' sticker on your passport. This sticker is similar to indefinite leave to remain in the sense that if you have already done 5 years in the UK prior to getting this sticker, you can apply for your British passport straightaway. If you join without having done 5 years, you would need to wait till the 5 year point before you get your British passport.
2. You will travel the world. Most people will be sent all over Europe, America, Africa, Middle East.
3. You will live in heavily subsidized housing provided by the Army. Imagine getting £65 a month deducted from your wage to live in a 2 bedroom flat all by yourself.
4. You will be paid a handsome wage which you will hardly ever spend because everything is subsidized.
5. You can apply to join with your student visa as soon as you land in UK, application process lasts about 6-9 months.
6. You can give the Army notice to leave after you have done 3 years and you feel you want to pursue your career dreams.
7. If you are married, your family will be well-catered for with subsidized housing, and they are entitled to UK dependent visas with no stress whatsoever.
8. The likelihood of you been sent to a ''warzone'' is very negligible. Only special forces are in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. You will be surprised though at the number of soldiers who actually volunteer to go to these zones.
9. This is also open to female applicants. Infact, black female enjoy positive discrimination right from the application all the way through their career. The Army is trying to make people believe it's gender and ethnic fair. There are many African females in the British Army.
10. It is not unthinkable for you to leave the Army after you have completed 4 years with £50,000 savings in your account, because you hardly touch your wages.

Challenges:
1. You would need to be ready to work on your physical fitness as soon as you submit your application. The physical tests are not hard but for someone coming from Nigeria with our capacity to consume fufu and egusi plus assorted cheesy, you need to be ready to work on your body. I would advise going for steady state runs 3 times a week, start slowly and build it up to 5-6 miles 3 times a week. Google some upper body exercises to strengthen you upper body. Like I said, the tests are not hard, it just requires determination and basic fitness.
2. The Army is not the way you see it on TV. Yes, the Army fires big weapons and jump out of helicopters e.t.c; but, 70% of your actual job is mundane and monotonous. Some people find it boring and give notice to leave at the 3 year point, some others choose to stay in it throughout their life.
3. Be ready to be sent anywhere in the world at short notice, this might have an impact on your family/relationships. You would need a very understanding partner.
4. Be ready to train under extremes of temperature i.e. extremely hot climate like Jordan, Bahrain e.t.c, or extremely cold climate like Norway, Iceland, and some parts of America.
5. You can get injured from training exercises, but if you do, you will be heavily compensated by the Army and the Government. If you get injured while in training, you are still entitled to indefinite leave to remain.
