On June 12, the Federal Government launched a website where Nigerians can register for the Federal Government’s employment programme. In just 8 days that site has become the 72nd most popular site on Alexa.com’s Nigeria rankings. In fact, on the first day of its existence, the site had 400,000 registrations.

Anyone who owns a blog knows how much Google Adsense and other advertisers would pay him if he had that amount of traffic.

Npower.gov.ng has already gotten to a place it took Linda Ikeji Blog years to get to, and all within a few days.

I think the government should use this massive traffic on their site to sell ads. You may say that jobseeker traffic is relatively unatractive due to the fact of their reduced spending power as a result of unemployment, but I believe anyone who can afford to get on the internet to search for jobs has considerable spending power.

And besides, who says sizable numbers of these job seekers would not become employed tomorow? Who says a sizable number of them would not become entrepreneurs tomorow?

I think the revenues generated from selling ads on Npower.gov.ng should be used mainly to help fund the salaries of those applicants FG eventually employs. It can be just like a beauty peageant is funded. You sell forms to many, and out of that you get money for the prizes and a lot of profit for your self.

it's a very nice idea. the FG can generate passive income from this site. Job sites like Jobberman and co. do advertise through FB ads and Google AdWords. They will get excellent Targeted traffic using Npower.

Re: Why Nigeria’s Federal Government Should Begin Selling Ads On Npower.gov.ng by igahdavid(m): 8:00am On Jun 21, 2016
This is a nice idea. I think its a win win situation. There are lots of recruitment sites and companies that can place adverts. Someone that is unemployed will be very glad to see other job vacancies he can apply for. Even seminars and entrepreneur workshops can be advertised.
The government gets paid through adverts and unemployed youths get to apply for more vacancies and might even get jobs from the adverts.

WIN WIN

I am one of those with a strong believe that government can generate additional income through the internet. The OP is on point and I think government need to maximise all the resource at her disposal.

Thinking that everyone visiting that site is poor and can't afford anything is very WRONG, I have friends entrepreneurs/netrepreneurs that have applied. So it will be very wrong to assume that even the "Artisans" are all poor, its part of the national cake and almost everybody wanna get a share of it.

Secondly, a positive government doesn't necessarily have to listen to every distraction, just go ahead with what is right (make more money for Nigeria) and at end of it even your critics will applaud you.

Lastly, be it Npower or any other site, the government can make decent amount of money out of it, all that's required is for the government to create a page in the site that will recruit for all government agencies(customs, nnpc, efcc etc).

In summary let the government of the day (including states) learn to think outside the box, imagine the president and his ministers addressing Nigerians and making all his policies and programmes public through a particular government owned website instead of Twitter...wow! That's money.

There's a reason some site carries the TLD .gov, it is mainly not for profit. Apart from that, imagine a candidate logging in to apply and the next thing he sees beside the apply button is "Find Russian Girlfriend Today", I sure you will be the first to blast the Nigerian government

1500 likes for u.

I couldn't help but burst out with laughter when I saw that part "Find Russian Girlfriend Today" grin grin

The question is, how long is the website keep experiencing this level of traffic?

Put aside the fact that most of the applicants may not be convertible, I think if the traffic will not be consistent, the idea of thinking ads is not a welcome development.

LARRYDKING:
U think unemployed Nigerian youths are interested in ads? U try. Most people will bypass the ads for whatever made them visit it in the first place.

It will also give the opposition a good chance to nag at the FG a million times for intending to make money by taking advantage of innocent Nigerians. U self go change your orientation when pdp feast on such news.

To think all a lot of those who visited the site has considerable spending power is fallacious. I doubt if u know how broke most who visit that site daily are. Someone called me to register for him during the period the site crashed. He said he has spent all he had with him at the cafe, he wouldn't mind if I keep helping him to try it on phone. He doesn't have an a smart phone if u care to know.

Nigerians are suffering my guy.

so thoughtful.
