The Federal Government has ordered the sack of striking resident doctors in the country.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, in a circular signed by Amina Shamaki, permanent secretary of the ministry directed chief medical directors (CMDs) and medical directors (MDs) of FG tertiary health institutions to fill the vacancies created by resident doctors who have “abandoned” their programme. Resident doctors in government hospitals embarked on a nationwide strike on Monday.

The circular reads:

“It has come to the notice of the management of the ministry that some resident doctors in your establishment have voluntarily withdrawn from the residency training program by refusing to report for training without authorisation. public service rule, PSR 030402 (e) is relevant. “This is in spite of the ongoing negotiations on their demands put forward by the representatives of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) under the auspices of the Nigerian Medical Association.

“In view of this development, you are hereby directed to replace all the doctors that have withdrawn their services, with others from the pool of applicants for the training programs in the various disciplines in order not to create ominous gap in training with attendant disruption of health care delivery in your facility.

“Meanwhile, the ministry is working with the panel on the review of the residency training programme in Nigeria, led by Professor Wole Atoyebi, the registrar of the National Postgraduate Medical College, to fast-track the development of a comprehensive blueprint for postgraduate training of doctors in the country.

“Please, ensure immediate compliance.”

The circular only talked about replacing trainee doctors that have voluntarily withdrawn from the residency training program. Can't see any sack order there.

I don't understand this military govt we are runing in this country.
Isn't it money that they(fg) will use to pay the new ones? Won't they still pay them their entitlements? Why don't they aswell pay the striking ones their entitlements and end the strike.
Dumb govt

News of this magnitude and only one "aproko247.com" carries it??

I'd holster my weapon for now until we get a more credible source. But in the mean time, if there's any truth to this, I'd say it's a poor decision from the FG- even the Ineffectual Buffoon did it with lecturers under the thug Nyiesom Wike and got his ass whooped severely. Baba shouldn't fall for the same shiit.

Edit:

Confirmed on PT.

This one is a BIG NO for me. Baba should order a withdrawal of that circular ASAP. Aint no need courting enemies unnecessarily at this time. I believe the issues surrounding their agitation can be resolved without drawing more blood.

Please reconsider your decision Mr Minister.

The minister of health should understand these issues better. He was a product of this same residency program.

BRF did not succeed when he tried this in Lagos. Kolewerk

For 2nd time in 2 years ..threading that unfruitful path again.

I wish IFA all the best...no shaking for me though

I see the sack ish as a bargaining power for Prof Adewole though.
NARD would be asked to call off the strike before FG can withdraw the sack circular.

The Federal Government has sacked all resident doctors in the country indefinitely.

The doctors had been on an indefinite nationwide strike since July 1, in protest of Federal Government's non-implementation of some agreements it had with the union.

Other demands included immediate appointment of a Surgeon-General of the Federation and increase of hazard allowance to N100,000 monthly.

The doctors were also demanding reservation of the position of the chief medical director for medical doctors only.

The Federal Government, in a circular dated August 13, 2014, signed by L. N. Awute, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, on behalf of the minister directed the suspension of residency training programme for doctors in the country, and termination of appointment of all resident doctors to enable the government appraise the challenges facing the sector.

The government, in the circular, entitled "Re: Presidential directive suspending residency programme in Nigeria," directed the hospital boards of management to take all necessary measures to immediately restore full medical services.
