Episode 24

As I made my way back home, I struggled in vain to keep myself from thinking about what could be on between Tayo and Maria, and, most importantly, what the Elder had come to discuss with Maria. I didn’t know if Tayo was also there during their discussion but I felt a strong impression that he was. The last time Elder Joshua came unexpectedly and in quick successions was when he heard about Tayo and Tolani. He had series of after-service meetings with him in a bid to restore him in love and help him overcome his depression.

Tayo had shown significant improvement when a more matured spiritual leader stepped in to assist him, though he still makes reference to how helpful I was in getting him through those difficult times. I reminisced our early friendship days. I began to worry that something might go wrong to sour our friendship. If my guess that Tayo was also ‘eyeing’ Maria was true, then our friendship would be at stake. I could share anything or anyone with a friend, but not the woman who I claim to love.

Deliberately shifting my attention from the perturbing thoughts that infested my mind, I chose to fantasize about other interesting subjects—my ideal wife, dream-wedding, and future home. As I continued trekking home, I daydreamed about going for annual picnics with my wife—Debby’s picture flashed to my mind but I shook it off quickly and replaced it with Maria’s. I imagined my children running around the house, playing hide and seek; Samuel—the name I intend to give my first son—being a facial resemblance of me, and his sister, Susan, that of my wife…

My reverie was interrupted by the greeting of a course mate. “Happy Sunday, Femi.” He said as he crossed to the other side of the road to meet me.

“Same to you, Mike.” We exchanged pleasantries and he went his way.

I was about reverting back to my wonderland when the blaring hooter of a trailer shook me back to reality. With just a few more steps, I helped myself to the compound of the hostel, and headed straight to Tayo’s door with no idea whatsoever on how to present my case. Was I going to openly confront him and accuse him of stealing my ‘bride-to-be’? Should I ask him if there’s anything beyond ‘brotherly love’ going on between him and Maria? Or, maybe I could just tell him how I was feeling towards Maria and see what his reaction would be.

“Knock! Knock!! Knock!!!” I said in my characteristic manner as I tapped his door trice.

There was no need asking who was at the door as he already knew. He opened the door and I saw he was on the phone with someone.

“Should I come back?” I whispered. He beckoned that I should wait. I slipped into a chair and flipped half-mindedly through the pages of a book on the table, trying to eavesdrop on his conversation without being noticed. From the little I gathered, it appeared he was speaking with Elder Joshua. He did more listening than talking. After the call ended, he looked happy and satisfied, but I didn’t want to pry.

“How was today’s service?” I asked with a friendly tone.

“Today’s service was wonderful.” He tucked his phone in his pocket.

Still turning the pages of the book, I said, “I guess you had a visitor today—again.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Which visitor?” Tayo’s answer puzzled me. He couldn’t be lying. Could that mean he didn’t know about Elder Joshua’s visit?

“Never mind. It’s not important.” I changed the subject of discussion. “How’s your preparation for the exams?”

“No. Femi, you have to tell me. Which visitor were you referring to?” Tayo pressured me for more information.

“I thought it was you Elder Joshua came to see.”

“Elder Joshua was around? What did he say?”

“He came to see Sister Maria. I thought you knew about it.”

Tayo sat on the bed, his head dropped into his palms. He was silent long enough for me to just sit there marvelling at the ongoing drama. I couldn’t tell if he was happy or sad, but since he wasn’t saying anything, I stood up and left. Obviously, something else was going on between him and Maria and the only thing that seemed to make sense was that they were in a relationship. If I had waited any longer, there’s no guarantee that I’d be able to control my emotions. I had an ace in the hole—telling Maria about Tolani.

Resisting the pressure to call Maria immediately, I decided to wait till the following Sunday before bringing up the issue again. The days seemed endless and the week almost refused to end. I tried as much as possible to avoid any discussion that could raise the topic with Tayo. When I finally met Maria on Sunday, I was shocked that she was the one who asked to see me after the service.

Thankfully, I’d delegated the preaching of the sermon to one of the leaders, otherwise, it would have affected my ministration that Sunday. Moreover, I felt unqualified to preach that day. I had repeatedly silenced the constant bidding of the Holy Spirit on how I was handling the matter. The indescribable nervousness that gripped me made me break into sweats uncontrollably. When the service ended, I escaped into the vestry for a drink of water to cool my overheating body system.

“Sister Maria, it’s always a pleasure to see you.” I had to pretend all was well when she came in.

“It’s a pleasure to see you too. And it appears you are on break today.” She took her seat without asking.

“Necessary break.” I answered, relaxing into the chair. “Sometimes you get blessed and refreshed when you listen to others preach. You said you wanted to see me.”

“Yes. I considered what you told me last week and I want to bother you with some personal matters. I hope you don’t mind.”

“Bother me? No. That wouldn’t be bothering in any way. If it’s personal to you, then it concerns me.” Did I really mean that, or was I just looking for something?

“Hmm. I knew I could trust you.” She said with a smile, and sat forward. “It’s about Bro Tayo.”

My heart skipped a beat or two at the mention of his name. Different thoughts started flying through my mind: Was she about to report Tayo to me? Did he propose to her? Was he giving her any problem? Is he trying to lure her into…

“Bro Tayo? Yes, what about him?”

“Please, don’t be offended as I shouldn’t be asking you this. But, are you two on good terms?” She must have heard or noticed something.

“I believe so. Why would you ask such? What did you notice? What did he say to you?”

“We’re supposed to go somewhere together this weekend and I told him I wanted you to go with us, but he’s reluctant. He said I should find someone else or tell you about it myself. I don’t understand, because I thought you were best friends.”

Go somewhere? Together? I was sure it wasn’t an evangelistic outreach they were going. My heart was pounding hard in my chest and my limbs shook under the desk where they were hidden away. I had to rest my elbows on the desk to stabilize my trembling arms.

“What did you mean when you said, you were to gosomewhere, together?”

“He didn’t tell you?” She said with raised eyebrows. Her look of surprise met mine. “Tayo and I are engaged.”

Episode 25

For a moment, I felt the beating in my heart stop. A devilish numbness crawled up my arm. I stared vainly at the figure before me, contemplating unholy options that invaded my subconscious. I stared until my sight became blurred and I thought I was going to collapse, then I sneezed hard and revived.

“You and Tayo are what?!” I stood up from the chair, then sat again. I tried to keep my voice low. “Are you messing with my mind, Maria?” In addition to the surprised look on her face, she was looking scared too. She’d probably never seen me this way before. I’m not sure I’ve seen myself this way before either.

“Why would I joke with such a thing? He proposed to me some weeks ago. Is there a problem with that?” She looked so sincere. I knew it would be unwise to start telling her I’d been having a crush on her too.

“What do you even know about Tayo?”

“Enough to want to get married to him.”

“Really? You think you know him? Do you think because he is brilliant and appears spiritual, then he is perfect? You are choosing by sight, Maria.”

“I know Tayo is not angel, and I’m not one either.” She turned her face towards the window. “I believe God is leading me to marry him.”

“God is leading you?” I gave a sarcastic laugh. “Sister Maria, I am speaking with you as a concerned friend who doesn’t want you to fall into a trap. You better be sure that God is really leading you. You are aware that Tayo is my best friend, and I know so much about him. There are many things you don’t know about him and you need to pray that God will reveal those things to you. I’m sure if you receive a full revelation about Tayo, you will think twice before giving him a reply.”

“You might as well start giving me those revelations right now, because I have already said yes to him. I told you we’re engaged.”

An alarm went off in my head once more—more like the church bell ringing at prayer time. “What?!” I hit the table so hard that she jerked backward. “You said what to him?” I asked as if that’s not what being engaged meant. I knew I’d already run slim on options, so I activated my ‘Plan B’.

“Sister Maria,” I said with an authoritative tone, “You have allowed carnality to get the better part of you. If you had spent time in prayer, God would have warned you about him.”

“What are you insinuating, Bro Femi? I know what God told me even before he came with his proposal. So, what would God have warned me about?”

I shook my head with pity in a way that said, ‘Children of nowadays. What do they know?’

“Since you have given him your answer,” I continued, “Then you have one question to ask him.”

“What question?”

“I will tell you the question, but you can’t ask me for the answer. You should ask him to tell you about—”

“Tolani.” She completed the sentence. “Yes, he has told me about her. He has told me about Benjamin too. In fact, I’m supposed to meet them this weekend, and I wanted you to accompany us.” I was speechless. My balloon was punctured. I didn’t just look defeated, I felt defeated. I managed to say something.

“He told you about them, and you still want to marry him?”

“Of course.” Her answer was somewhat strong. “I know how I felt about him before he told me, and the feelings didn’t change after he told me. I believe God is with me on this. Telling me that part of himself made me love and trust him more than I did before.”

“You have feelings for him too? I thought you said it was me you liked?”

“I said I liked something about you. And, even though I didn’t tell you then, I’m telling you now that I liked you, and I still do. But, love and like aren’t the same. I likeyou, Femi, but I’m in love with Tayo.” She said emphatically. “Now I see what you’ve been doing. Is that why you’ve been bad-mouthing him since I came here? Trying to turn my attention from him to yourself.” I was ashamed of myself. All the cautions of the Holy Spirit that I refused to heed were now echoing in my ears. I’d been making a downward journey on the emotional lane that I’d shut out the inner voice of the Spirit. A part of me knew that my methods were wrong, but my emotions proved stronger than my knowledge. I bowed my head in shame.

“I’m disappointed in you, Femi.” Maria said, pushing the chair backward, and ready to leave. “I thought you were a good friend. And, to think that you are even a pastor; I expected more from you.” She turned back and opened the door.

“Wait.” I went after her before she stepped out of the vestry. I closed the door and started pleading with her. “Sister Maria, I’m so sorry. I know I shouldn’t have gone that far. Please, just please, forgive me.”

“Forgive you? That’s not hard to do, but since I’m not the only one your action affected, you need to ask God for forgiveness. And, you need to ask Tayo too.”

“Please, Sister Maria, promise me you will not tell Tayo about this. If you have truly forgiven me.”

“I’m sorry I can’t make that promise. I already promised him that I wouldn’t hide anything from him as far as our relationship was concerned. He trusts me so much that he didn’t hide anything from me, and I won’t betray that trust because of you. So, if you don’t want me to be the one to tell him, you should call him up and tell him yourself.”

That was fair enough. It would be worse for Tayo to hear it from Maria. “I’ll tell him.” I pleaded, “But, that will be later. Tayo can’t bear to hear that now.”

“That is mine to decided. If you don’t want me to tell him, you better make sure you have told him before the next time I see him.”

“And when is that?”

“This evening.”

“Can you at least do me a favour of being present when I tell him?”

She paused for a moment, then shrugged in agreement. “If you’d had agreed to accompany us to Tolani’s this weekend, we three would have had to meet this evening to plan for the journey. I could tell him you’d be around, then you’ll tell him.”

“Thank you.” I released the door. “I’m sorry again.” She took her leave without passing any comment. I locked the door and fell on my knees. I thought of how disappointed God too would be in me. I had allowed the flesh to drive so low to the point of disgrace. I pleaded with God to forgive me. I asked him to touch my heart and purify it again. I prayed. I was so lost in the prayer that I didn’t know when I dozed off.

To Be Continued tomorrow...I apologize for this please

Episode 23 Fathers are different from mothers in many ways. One of the most significant expressions of the otherness is exhibited in child training. Fathers, unlike most mothers, do not always say the words. They ask questions indirectly, warn with looks, and correct with the hand. Even when they talk, you have to decode their messages inferentially. After Tayo had Ben, I heard the unspoken words of my father each time he called: “Don’t allow what happened to Tayo to happen to you. You know the kind of father you have, don’t you? If you are passing through anything, you can tell me about it. I call often these days to tell you that I am available…” He didn’t have to say the exact words before passing the message. “Hello dad.” I sank back in the chair behind the desk prepared for general questions. “Hello, Oluwafemi. How are you doing? And how was today’s service?” His voice carried no special tone than of a father asking after the welfare of his son. “I’m fine sir. And the service was glorious.” I checked the watch. It was noon already. “How is mommy faring?” “Your mother is faring well. She mentioned that she felt weak and that she needed some rest. It must be because of the sanitation we did in the compound last weekend. I’m sure she’ll be fine.” “I’ll call her later in the day. Hope she ate well before sleeping?” I knew my father was a great cook and mother usually let him prepare some special delicacies. He told us his mother once ran an eatery where he had helped learnt a lot about cooking, while he was helping out. Sunday brunch was one meal we looked forward to in the family because dad was the cook. “No, she couldn’t eat before she slept. I made herbed potatoes but she drowsed off before the fish sauce was ready.” “I trust you dad. I’m salivating over it already. I miss your food.” I swallowed the saliva that had formed involuntarily in my mouth and cleared my throat. “I’ve been meaning to call you sir. There’s something I’d like to discuss with you.” “I hope it has nothing to do with these potatoes. I’m not sharing my wife’s potatoes with you.” Father had a light sense of humour too. “I’m not after your potatoes, dad. But I will be when I come home.” “Are you coming home? Is the matter that serious?” The tenor of his speech translated from humour to curiosity. “Yes, dad. It is serious and it’s not something I want to discuss over the phone.” “In that case, we’ll be expecting you. I hope it is good news you’re bringing.” That was an indirect reference to Tayo’s case. “It could be. It depends on a lot of things.” I pretended as if I didn’t notice what he said. “In that case, we’ll be expecting you.” He coughed softly. “I hope you’re hearing from Tayo, Benjamin, and—what’s that girls name again?” “Tolani.” I answered. “Yes, Tolani. How are they all doing?” He wanted to drive home his point. His message was clear: Whatever it is you want to see me about, it better not be related to the case of Tayo and Tolani. “Yes sir. They are all doing fine. I’ll try to make it home this weekend, or the next.” “My door is always open to you, son; and so are my ears and heart. You know that, right?” “I do sir. Give my hello to mom when she awakes.” “I will, son. God bless you. Have a prosperous week ahead.” “I wish you the same sir.” I waited for him to hang up. Immediately he did, I sprang to my feet. I had the intention of spying on Maria and Tayo before the call came in. Now, I wasn’t sure they’d still be there. The door of the office led directly to the side entrance at the front of the church. I approached the door carefully, peeping through the eyehole. I was trying to set the focus of my gaze when I heard a knock on the door. I pulled back and waited for some seconds. I peeped again to see who was at the door before trying to open. I was shocked to see Elder Joshua. Elder Joshua was one of the deacons at the headquarters. He was the one in charge of the youth church in the zone and he was around for our service two weeks ago. He doesn’t fellowship in any particular location other than the headquarters. He routinely tours campus churches and high school fellowships in the zone whenever he doesn’t have to be at the headquarters for Elders’ Meetings. His visits to a place were usually not more than once in two months, so I was surprised to see him again. I quickly opened the door. “Good afternoon Elder.” I was more surprised to see Sister Maria standing behind him. “Good afternoon, Brother Femi.” He shook my hands firmly. “How was today’s service?” “It was fine sir.” I answered, still trying to figure out what was going on. “It was not just fine, Elder. It was awesome.” Sister Maria added. “The glory belongs to God.” I shrugged. “And, to what do we owe the pleasure of hosting you for the second time in a month sir?” I looked around to see if Tayo was nearby. I didn’t see him. “I wouldn’t call it a second visit since I didn’t attend the service here.” Elder Joshua replied. “I just came to see someone who needed to see me.” He looked at Sister Maria’s face and smiled. “Well, well. I guess you’ve seen her already.” I said, short of words. What could have come to see her for? Could it be what I was thinking? If that’s the case, it means he’ll want to see me too. My mind was busy. “Yes, we’ve discussed and I’d like to be on my way now.” He turned back to leave. ‘Maybe he’ll come back to see me. ‘ I told myself. “So soon?” I exclaimed. “You won’t even let me entertain you sir?” “I have already been entertained where I worshipped today. God bless your intention.” I saw him off to his car in company of Sister Maria. Neither of us said anything to each other. “Extend my greetings to your wife and children sir.” I said, as I waved goodbye. “I will. God bless you.” He zoomed off. As we returned to the church, Sister Maria carried her bag and waved goodbye too. As I watched her leave, I wanted to stop her and ask what it was she discussed with the Elder, but I didn’t because I knew that would be meddlesome. I also wanted to ask her what she really meant when she said she liked something about me; I wanted to find out if that was all she meant or if she was just trying to be deliberately vague in her expression, but I stopped again, letting her go. ‘The time for that will come.’ I mumbled to myself. Then it occurred to me that I could do one more thing: I could ask Tayo—maybe not directly, though. I decided to give it a try. It Continues Still…

Episode 26

Repeated knocks on the door awoke me. I recognized Tayo’s voice. He wasn’t alone; I could hear Maria’s voice too. It sounded like they were praying. I checked the time on my phone and saw that it was 5 pm already. I had missed about 8 calls from both Tayo and Maria. I’d been sleeping for over 4 hours. As I got up from my knees, I remembered that I’d been dreaming too. There was another knock on the door. I sat there, silent, trying to recollect what my dream had been. Was it a good dream or a bad dream? Why did it leave me panting breathlessly?

“Femi, it is Tayo. We are waiting on you.”

“I’ll be with you shortly.” I answered from within.

My mind quickly did a replay of the dream. I’d seen myself dressed as an athlete preparing for a marathon. After several weeks of training, I was finally set for the race. Lining the streets were various friends and relatives, church members too. The race had begun in earnest and I’d taken off well. I couldn’t recognize the other contestants but I knew I wasn’t alone. I’d seen Maria in a golf cart, dressed like a coach cheering me all the way. I’d begun to lose concentration on the race while I focused on her and kept appreciating her for being there for me.

My thoughts were interrupted by another knock on the door. I stood up reluctantly, steadying my breathing to avoid unnecessary questions. I opened the door to a company of Tayo, Maria, and Mercy. They were seated in a circle and were praying. Sister Mercy was Sister Maria’s prayer partner and best friend. She was the choir director for the fellowship too. I joined them to become the fourth around the table. Tayo rounded off the prayers after I joined them. I looked inquiringly into Maria’s face to know if she’d told anyone anything. She shook her head to deny it. That meant Tayo felt I had agreed to accompany them to their outing.

“Before we go on, I have a few things to say.” I turned towards Tayo. He must have felt guilty that he didn’t tell me about his engagement to Maria. If I was indeed his best friend as I thought, I didn’t expect him to have kept me in the dark on such a matter. If you were in his shoes, would you have done otherwise? The question was sharp in my spirit, but the truth was I would have done the same. But, that was not what I wanted to say, I wanted to make a confession. Tayo didn’t know this, so he spoke up before I could continue.

“I have something to say too, Femi, and I think I should go first.” His interruption was helpful. I kept quiet and listened with rapt attention.

“I am sincerely sorry that you didn’t get to hear it directly from me. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know what to expect. The first time Elder Joshua asked to see me after church service, during our discussions about Tolani, he asked me if I’d been praying about knowing God’s will in marriage. I told him that I’d perceived God’s leading towards Sister Maria even before I went for my industrial attachment but deliberately kept it from everyone because I wasn’t ready for a relationship. I had tried to just maintain a casual friendship with her which has grown over time.”

I was not really listening to him, but I gave no such expression on my face. My eyes were fixed on him but my mind roamed back to the dream. In it, I’d wanted to quit the race, not because I was tired, but because I wanted to be with Maria. I wanted to be with the person who believed in me that I could win the race even when no one else did. I’d stopped running while beckoning to her to come. She’d alighted from the golf cart and ran towards me thinking I needed some help.

Tayo continued his story: “I shared my testimony with him and he took it up from there. Sister Maria later told me that he came to see her the following week and asked the same question he’d asked me. When he confirmed from her own independent testimony that she also perceived the same thing, he told me to prayerfully start the process.” He paused to study the expression on my face.

I was still looking at him but I was remembering how I’d tried to tell Maria in my dream that I wasn’t interested in the race anymore, but she wouldn’t listen. She just kept encouraging me to keep running. ‘You’re almost there,’ she had said, pointing towards the finish line. ‘Keep running. Fix your eyes on the prize. You can win this prize. Look at the prize. Focus on the prize.’ Since she didn’t give me any chance to tell her why I wanted to discontinue the race, I had decided to do as she bade and win the race—for her. After that, I would be free to tell her what I wanted from her, I thought.

“We did all that was required,” Tayo continued, “And, today we’re engaged. I wanted to tell you some things at some junctures and even ask you some questions, but I guessed that because of your closeness to her, you might have conflict of interest if I asked your counsel as a friend. I didn’t want to put you in a position where you’d have to choose between me and Maria.” I remained silent.

“Femi, are you not going to say anything?” Tayo asked. I had nothing to say because I was only partially listening. I had strayed in thoughts back to my dream where I’d had to yield to Maria’s persistent encouragement as she emphasized ‘The Prize‘. As I looked up at the finish line, I saw Debby standing behind it, holding a poster with the inscription, ‘The Prize.’ I looked at Maria’s face and she nodded in affirmation. While I was contemplating going for the prize or insisting on choosing Maria, someone raced past me heading towards Debby. Like a flash, I gathered momentum and charged after the unidentified person, my heart beating fast.

As in the dream, my heart was racing again, a resultant effect of a series of what Tayo was saying, the dream and the thought that I may have lost the prize because of my delay and insensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Tayo misconstrued my heavy breathing for a bad temper.

“Femi, I know you have every reason to be cross with me, but find a place in your heart to forgive me for misjudging you in my mind. I’m so sorry.” Tayo begged.

“You have done nothing wrong Tayo.” I shifted my attention to Maria and then back to Tayo. Sister Mercy was quiet. “You did the right thing by not telling me before now. To be honest, I would have competed with you over her.” I chuckled. “I actually tried but the Lord has been kind enough to point out my mistakes to me.” I narrated what transpired between Maria and me earlier in the afternoon to him. “I have apologized to Sister Maria, and I have asked God too for forgiveness. I need you too to forgive me.”

Tayo was stunned. Obviously, he was more disappointed in me than Maria was. The expression on his face said something like, ‘What if you had succeeded with your plans?’

“You’ve been a good friend to me, Femi. You were there when then there was nobody for me. You helped me up when I fell, and though I’m not pleased with what you did, I still forgive you. I owe you that much. I really wish that our friendship continues and that you’ll be the one to accompany us to see Tolani this weekend.”

“Thank you for forgiving me. If you still want me to go with you, I’d like to.” It was easy for me because my focus had changed. I could now hear God clearly. Now I understood what all that I’d been feeling towards Debby meant. It was God, all this while, speaking to me; leading me through a deep affection for Debby. Accompanying them would afford me the opportunity to see her. I wanted the weekend to be here already.

We spent the rest of the time planning the journey, praying together before leaving for our various homes. As I walked home with Tayo, the thought of sharing my dream with him crossed my mind but I quickly drove it out. When the weekend finally came, I was the first to reach the meeting point for the journey. Everyone was surprised at how joyful and eager I was about the journey, but there was no way they could guess why.

To Be Continued.....
