Justdulla: Things are already tough in Nigeria. It's not as if Nigeria is as developed as the West in terms of infrastructure to cater for all. Government can't employ everybody yet they are making things tough for hustlers. Btw, who says anyone can't come to Lagos ? |

Having a logical and reasonable debate on Nairaland keeps getting tougher and tougher each day. Its like most of the Nigerians on this thread thrive in just being ignorant and the reach of their reasoning is pretty limited. Yesterday so many people challenged the fact that there was actually a law against street trading in Lagos (and many other Nigerian State capitals). Now that the lagos state government has again reiterated that street hawking/peddling is illegal, the arguement is about if the hawkers should rather resort to being armed robbers. Now the foolishness of this line of reasoning can be seen when looked at like this: So all unemployed struggling young persons in Nigeria are either hawkers or robbers. There is no other option to making money for the unemployed except to be an illegal street trader, A Criminal Armed robber or an illegal street begger. There is no other business one can do in this nation of over 150 million people to make money when unemployed with no money to make money... REALLY?!!!! So to those of you on here holding on to this line of argument, this is it extent of the depth of your reasoning to making money when you are unemployed with minimal cash. iGiveUp for the second time on this thread.. I really do. #GodBlessNigeria&HaveMercyOnUsAll... 3 Likes |

Now this is disappointing- no where in this long statement where it is stated that the LASG regrets the unfortunate death of the poor boy who might still be alive had he not been chased in the first place. Ogbeni Steve you used to do better than this nah. 1 Like |

If I may ask, what is illegal about trading compared to public funds stealing and embezzlement when there are no jobs for the so called traders? The best thing to do is to get them off street trading through empowerment and job creation, not by arresting and putting them black marriers to later extort money from them and later chasing them till their death. This is just to bad from Lagos State. |

Okijajuju1: God bless you and increase your knowledge. The incidence was rather unfortunate but it was definitely an accident waiting to happen. Hawking on major roads in Lagos has been banned, this clearly means those hawking on highways understand what they are doing is illegal, but they still do it nevertheless. The govt should do everything to discourage hawking on the highways to avoid this sort of needless death, destruction of public properties and public disturbance. |

Peacefulgold: The accident was an unfortunate one, but Lagos State cannot shoulder the burden of the other 35 states in Nigeria. You don't expect Lagos to provide jobs for everybody trooping daily into Lagos in luxurious buses day and night. 1 Like |

This Ayorinde of a man is not serious. He is not even talking about the boy that was killed. He is busy telling us about how to curb the menace of hawkers and street trading. It is quite unfortunate that Nigeria is a country where anybody can do whatever he/she wants and go free. Weather it is soft drink truck or brt bus that crushed the poor boy to death, it is very bad of the way these KAI of a group use to chase this poor hawkers. I witnessed this same incident sometime last year at sura Junction. About 4 months ago, a hawker that was on the run for this same KAI fell in front of my car and shattered my windscreen. please lagos state government has to do something about this KAI. We are talking about someone's life here and one heartless fellow is busy here telling us one nonsense story on how to keep lagos clean from Street trading and hawkers. |
Re: Lagos Releases Official Statement On How KAI Officials Chase Hawker To Death by loopman: 9:10am On Jun 30, 2016 |
alubert4real: There is nothing illegal in trading, but according to Lagos state laws, it is illegal to do your trading by hawking your goods on Lagos highways. From experience, hawking on roads contribute to traffic congestion and often times, petty criminals and robbers use the decoy of hawking to rob motorists. |

mizzbouqui: Humm! Later you would begin to complain to the same govt. of how you were robbed in traffic. What happens to driving through Mr. Big, Sweet Sensation, Mega Chicken, Tantalize... Etc? May his soul rest in peace. I make 120k every 5 weeks farming (green vegetables) on a standard plot of land at Ajah. I work just between 30 to 45mins per day. I bought 2 goats from my profits. One she and he goats. Planning to buy more and expand my farming to the next plot of land. The land on which I farm belong to someone living abroad, who has no plan yet on what to do with the land. I am a graduate of banking and finance since 2012. I started farming 4 months ago, I wish I had started earlier. |

loopman:U r very correct....but my pain is dat dis Kai officials r not actually doing dis job for d government but rather just looking for victims to enrich their pocket wit...let me give u an example..dis happened in oshodi...a pedestrian was about crossing d express wit out using d bridge and dis Kai official was just standing next to him, instead of d guy to call him back not to cross ,dat he should make use of d bridge dat he could endanger his life yle crossing d express ..he allowed him cross and immediately he crossed d first lane d guy went after him to arrest him...but d funniest part was dat d Kai officially in thinking only about d money he was going to get from d offender almost got hit by a car yle crossing....so d point is if really dey have safety of d citizens at heart..dat Kai official would have prevented dat man from commiting d offense but instead he allowed him commit it so he can arrest him and extort money from him.....dats too bad... |

Peacefulgold: There is a trite in law, Ignorance is not an excuse, While I would be the last person to exonerate these badly trained govt quasi law enforcement officials, it behooves also on the citizens not to fall foul of the law. Why would a pedestrian be so much in a hurry not using the bridge but subject his/her life to danger of getting knocked down by a moving vehicle? Nigerians, we go to foreign countries and obey their laws (we even obey more than required sef ), but when we are in our own country, we flagrantly disobey laws. 1 Like |

Omoluabi16: We should stop getting emotional over facts. Street hawking is illegal and there have been signposted in many streets and highways to that effect for many years. Have you gone on the roads to see kids of school age who can be enrolled into any of the public schools hawking on the street, especially those cleaners of windshields? These people have incentives of immediate cash and its not about it being a last resort..... The moment we try to rationalise the other way what has already passed, we are simply being in denial |

Okijajuju1: And have mercy on you also Dont just hide behind the keypads of your phone and just because you know the law, and have access to the internet, you write whatever you like How many agberoes have been arrested by KAI? Oh sorry, the arent participating in Indiscipline I pass iyana oba everyday. KAI trucks are stationed there and they dont chase anybody. Maybe their Iyaloja has settled them but because this poor boy didnt have a family or isnt REGISTERED, he deserves a hot chase. Looking at reality, some people are not fortunate like you to go to school, or be informed. And there is a family to feed. So your candid advice to that person who needs to eat tonight is to start learning a trade. Maybe in 6 months he will be done and by then, his landlord must have thrown him out. What will be his survival means during those periods? Dont just lie down on your chair and type. Go out and hear people's problems. You will get a better opinion on why the stupid law against hawking should be abolished. The law can be structured in a way whereby the hawkers pay tax to the government and are made to clean up the highways. Thats better Thanks for your writeup sha 1 Like |

willyo: My friend see. The reality is that everyone has one or two reasons /excuses to justify his wrong doing. Some people are into armed robbery and they will give you reason(s) for it. Some people are into prostitution and they will give you excuses to defend themselves. But the reality is that, what is bad is bad. hawking on the high way is against the law of many states. 1 Like |

mapet:I have a buddy who was a street hawker in the tough streets of Aba. He's a 2:1 graduate now. Now I ask what is the alternative? Street hawking was deemed 'illegal' by this government because of their crazed ambition to make lagos a mega city. Street hawking is not a criminal activity..when the government has failed to meet up to its responsibilities, of course the citizens will act otherwise. People go on about skill acquisition and all.But where is the structure? I t doesn't have to be so difficult just to survive..we Can't absolve the Government of any blame. |

Your Tinubu and Buhari live on what belong to the poor man and his kids in the first place. Otherwise free education that they proudly benefited from would have benefited the poor man too and he would have the opportunity to know and implement family planning. For instance, all the billions meant for electricity projects and sustenance are not been stolen by the poor man. There is a law in the land and he broke it. And there are so many "white-elephant" project till tomorrow promising job creation that will still find many kids hawking on the street when parent and no longer afford one square meal a day. The poor man could have gone back to farming if the govt. did not divert the billions meant for agriculture into their own pocket. The poor boy does not have to be a mechanic because he may not do well at it. But sorry if the boy likes to learn welding and the good welder in their neighborhood has embarked on okada business all because he couldn't afford the cost of running and maintaining a diesel generator everyday. Government don't have to create jobs, no. But it is the statutory responsibility of the govt. to establish and sustain job creation environment. Now who sanction the govt when it fails to do his job?
