tdayof:The government isn't our problem, we are. Where does the government come from? Uganda? Let me illustrate this point with a couple of quotes: "Every nation gets the government it deserves."-- Joseph-Marie. "It is necessary, then, to add to these things a compulsion and a penalty, if they [good men] are going to be willing to rule …the greatest part of the penalty is being ruled by a more wicked man, if he himself should not consent to rule."-- Plato. ![]() |

eph12:Thanks but I have passion for lecturing already so I won't hesitate taking up a career in lecturing and please your afore stated points do not apply to microbiology alone but to virtually all courses in Nigeria. Mind you, I know microbiologists who are faring very well n pharmacists who aint, every course been studied in the university can offer you the opportunity to succeed in life, it boils down to how well u'r able to develop yourself and how skillful and dilligent you are @ what you do. |

IZANAMI:I'm not a pharmacist and there's no bad belle, I know a lot of pharmacists, my brother is a UK qualified pharmacist who moved over to the states which is why how I know that what the American's call a D.plarm is nothing but a bachelors degree in pharmacy. There are some old school universities (cambridge I think) that will award a M.A degree in the Uk but they are not actually masters degrees, they are bachelors degrees, it's simply that university's way. Educate yourself Just as the Cambridge M.A is not a masters, the American D.Pharm is not a doctorate "In most UK universities, the Master of Arts is a degree awarded by examination. At Cambridge, the MA is conferred by right on holders of the BA degree of the University and on certain other senior members and is not available as a postgraduate qualification." http://www.cambridgestudents.cam.ac.uk/your-course/graduation-and-what-next/cambridge-ma Like I said i also know a lot of pharmacists who end up hating the profession because they end up in a back room in a store and I am only reporting on the experiences they have shared with me. Most pharmacists end up in retail pharmacies like boots, Walgreens CVS etc and the working conditions are horrible, except you end up in a hospital or a pharmaceutical research company an HMO or get to open your own pharmacy, a lot tend to end up hating dispensing which is where most end up. Just reporting what I have been told. PS: and no the D.Pharm hasn't been in existence since the '70s, it was only introduced in 2003, when they decided that to study pharmacy you must have a 1st degree, prior to that it was called a B.pharm like everywhere else in the world. Educated yourself instead of blurting things out of ignorance https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharmacy_school "The basic requirement for pharmacists to be considered for registration is an undergraduate or postgraduate pharmacy degree from a recognized university. In many countries, this involves a four- or five-year course to attain a master of pharmacy degree (MPharm). In the United States of America, students graduating after January 1, 2003, must complete a doctor of pharmacy degree to become a licensed pharmacist. This same requirement has been coming into place in other countries such as Canada and France. The doctor of pharmacy degree requires completion of four years at an accredited college of pharmacy (most students applying for admission into a college of pharmacy already have an undergraduate degree. However, many schools admit students after completion of two or three years of undergraduate pharmacy prerequisites or directly from high school into a six-year accelerated program). Any person holding a bachelor's degree in pharmacy who graduated before this date is grandfathered in and can register for a license." As you can see all that changed was that they now require that you have a degree (any discipline) before you can study pharmacy in the states but your degree is still a bachelors degree even though it is called a D.pharm. Some of you need to know that the American education system is different from everywhere else in the world, in America you can combine courses as you like from philosophy to engineering and get a bachelors degree once you have totaled enough credits. |

mikron:That is very good! But the greatness of a people is not just about them receiving degrees in a foreign land! Character, Discipline and what you achieve(produce and make possible) in your own country is the real parameter for assessing a great country! Israelis, Indians, Chinese, South Koreans, etc are respected all over the world because of what they have been able to do in their own country! We need to translate academic excellence into excellence in character, discipline, integrity, honesty and hard work. A very honest, sincere, trainable and hardworking third-class graduate or school drop-out is much better ''human resource'' than a dubious, corrupt and fraudulent first-class graduate or PhD holder who would defraud the company. Lets learn from the Asians..... |

Joice21:Of course there will surely be those that do very well in the courses I mentioned but there is not enough places to accommodate even a quarter of biological sciences graduate in the country. I am one of them and you hardly see job adverts from that sector so you know I know what am talking about. And the painful part is the stress our lecturers make us pass through to get a degree in biological sciences which is not even useful IMO. You either become a teacher or a lecturer or cross to another profession. Unless you set out to be a lecturer it will be a very difficult part to success as a biochemist microbiologist zoologist or botanist. |

Excellent news!. However we should all aspire to one day return home and make Nigeria great again!. We should join the ''brain drain'' by joining the bandwagon to develop America with both our knowledge and then taxes. We should instead acquire knowledge, skills and use it to come and develop Nigeria. Like Obama said when he was elected. Africa will be developed by only Africans ''Only Africans can end corruption in their countries''. "Africa's progress will also depend on democracy, because Africans, like people everywhere, deserve the dignity of being in control of their own lives,"- Obama |

Joice21:Jesus! You will choose microbiology over pharmacy?! Lmao, you are probably among the mediocre students back then. Infact when I was still a student, some of my friends who failed their pharmacy classes were demoted to microbiology, so much for MCB i guess. Just say that you are not sure you can ever study the course and pass, don't undermine it ever. You might as well study Biochem ahead of medicine I guess too. |
| Re: 43 Of The 96 Howard Univrsity Doctor Of Pharmacy Candidates Are Nigerians by Nobody: 11:54am On Jun 30, 2016 |
Mickael2:I'm mediocre? Jeez! U're unbelievable..I knew there was such course as pharmacy when I opted for MCB, stop thinking with your ass..that u studied pharmacy does not guarantee u'l b more successful than I'll be.I'm an intellect n will thrive well in whatever course I decide to study..I don't wanna argue with you..it's not my thing. |
| Re: 43 Of The 96 Howard Univrsity Doctor Of Pharmacy Candidates Are Nigerians by Mickael2(m): 11:57am On Jun 30, 2016 |
Joice21:Oh but I studied Medicine and Surgery actually. Ofcourse people know that the course does exist, but it does not prevent people from running to botany and other courses because they can't do it, not because they don't want to. You are still an undergraduate or you are aspiring to become one soon? If your answer to any of the question is a yes, then won't you jump to pharmacy in a heartbeat if someone offers you that oppurtunity even if it means restarting from the scratch? Don't give me that crap, there is absolutely no comparison there |

Nothing to be proud of, given each of those payed nothing less than 20k per year over 4 years ;that is over $800k Nigerian universities have lost if we had good institutions. Also very important to note that none of those would be practising in Nigeria so what gain is their education to the Nigerian populace |

vodutive:What's with this baseless epistle inspite of this essay, you still made a lot of faux pas,I mean you didn't make much sense :\Now to educate you,I came to realise I made a mistake by vindicating the fact Pharm D had been in existence since the 70's,it wasn't even in the 70's,it has been in existence long before then, that was since 1950's apparently negating what you said about it being introduced in 20th century https://pharmacyschool.usc.edu/programs/pharmd/pharmdprogram/ Besides,it's so apparent you're misquoting me,Prolly due to the fact you have a low sense of comprehension or something, there was nowhere in my write-up I said Pharm D is a doctorate degree,I only said it involves more of clinical practice,in other words, more clinically oriented to a reasonable extent. Just like MBBS isn't a doctorate degree,it's a bachelor's degree which implies bachelor of medicine and surgery. For the fact some pharmacists got to hate their profession over time doesn't imply all practicing pharmacists hate their profession.I know a lot of pharmacist who are faring well.Of course,i know some doctors whom after the whole rigor of several years obtained their MBBS cert had to go for MBA,it applies to all career,so the career unsatisfactor doesn't aplly to pharmacy alone. I also noticed you cited boots and wallgreen in your write up,there are no retail pharmacies nor pharmaceutical industries with such name in Nigeria presently.Possibly, you're enumerating the ones abroad. Of course, most pharmacists end up in retails and pharmaceutical industries obviously because that's where the money and opportunity to earn big is. Hospital job as a pharmacist is boring and the pay isn't much encouraging unlike the pharmaceutical industries and retail pharmacies. Most hospitals and government parastatals pay pharmacists around 170k for an entry level(Grade level 10),please, how many graduates working with government organizations receive such The entry level for most courses is GL 8,only pharmacy and medicine are exceptions being GL 12 and GL 10 respectively so what's the fuss all about?Pharmacists can serve as Medical representative for Pharm industries be it multinationals or local pharmaceutical industry, the pay of local Pharm industries isn't much encouraging, but most multinationals pay between 190-270k for entry level, some even pay as high as 300k e.g Gsk,novartis, sanofi aventis, biofem, evans, cipla, fidson, drugfield and a lot more. Most pharmacists go for this offer apparently due to the bigger pay,you have to work your ass of for nothing less than 6years IN A government parastatal(nafadc,niprd,ndlea,PMG-MAN) before you start earning such(GL 12/13).So why would one settle for less? It's only in a government parastatal a pharmacist is paid less.. There's actually no job security in this med rep of a thing but the pay is enthralling and fascinating. Most pharmacist I know are doing it temporarily for the sake of saving much capital huge enough to start up their own firm..You can never see a jobless pharmacist in Nigeria,in this present age where a lot of graduates with good grades roaming the street will jump at any offer, example is the NPF recruitment conducted couple of weeks ago,Pharmacy is Gold bro,if you're streetwise and smart of course. It also has its shortcomings ad there's nothing without both its pros and cons.. I also noticed you said something like horrible working conditions.Where?in Nigeria or in the states? My Elder bro worked for a retail pharmacy in Lagos couple of years back as his license was put to use and being paid for by the company,he was given and official car and a lots more tips so please expantiate on what you mean by horrible conditions. Most med rep are also given an official car for a start.. |
