TRIBUTE TO A RARE GEM ON THE OCCASION OF HIS BIRTHDAY (28 JUNE 2016)
BRIGADIER GENERAL VICTOR OKWUDILI EZUGWU
(General Officer Commanding 7 Division Nigerian Army)

Over the years, I have seen men and women who go the extra miles to make a positive difference in life, men who are optimistic of the future. These category of people are adopted by many young ones as "role models". Frail minds who hope to make a positive impact in their generation. I happen to fall into these category of young folks. Though in my mid-twenties, I have envisaged a time that seems beyond reach in my country, Nigeria. Owing to the fact that corruption has over-ran the concept of fairness, and hope for a better future seems immaterial. At a time like this, one is often tempted to doubt and wonder if the future promised by God will ever come to a fulfillment. All hopes seems lost.

Yet, a man sprung up and made the difference, A man who rekindled the hopes of both young and old and gave dispirited men a reason to keep up a good fight, run a race and be prepared to pay the ultimate price if the need arises with the hope that the family and loved ones left behind will not be left orphans.

I am a soldier, I served my country at a time when being in the military seems being "curse from the pit of hell". Flying the proud colours of the Nigerian Army was equivalent to "signing your death warrant". The honour of being a soldier practically became a disgrace as soldiers ran in disarray from the hydra-head occasioned by the Boko Haram menace.

It all started on 29 October 2012, when the highly fortified town of Mubi in Adamawa State was over-ran by the insurgents. Our bold Army was well spirited for the immediate recapture of the lost land. The zeal to fight on and made our fatherland proud was high spirited but something was missing. The experience of many soldiers during that period gave so many a totally different perspective of the Army they vowed on oath to serve and lay down their lives if the need arises. The zeal to fight was lost and the confidence reposed on the troops by the civilian populace we were to defend was crushed. All hopes seems to be lost.

At this critical time in the history of our country, there emerged a man with a difference. A man who rekindled the dying hope of the helpless soldiers and civilian populace. A man who marched on guided by the mighty hand of the Almighty. The hand of God was once again seen at work like in the days past. Only then did the slogan of the Army ("Victory from God alone") made true meaning me. Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu led his Army like a David he is. He was a David to an 'Israelite' Nigerian Army being tormented by an 'Egyptian Pharaoh'. With his faith in God, fervent prayer and a dedicated life to the service of God he led a poorly equipped and badly motivated troops to a great battle against the insurgents. Indeed, victory came from God through his hands.

It is with great joy and gladness in my heart that I make this accolade to a great mentor, best teacher, the perfect role model and a friend of God. As you celebrate the gift of another year added to your years, it is my earnest prayer that the good Lord whom you have served fervently and diligently continue to enlarge your coast. On this special day the Ezugwu family was blessed with Victory. So many men, women and children as well as animals rejoiced because God has remembered to take away a suffering that is still decades away. The years that could been taken away from them by the Boko Haram menace was secured by your birth. Therefore, you have not only given hope to the hopeless citizens of Nigeria residing in the North Eastern, you gave them the opportunity to celebrate another birthday for they were born with you. Also, you have extended a hand of friendship even to the least amongst your subordinates. You lead an exemplary life most worthy of emulation. By these you have drawn so many to the way of right and the way of salvation. Your good deeds will indeed speak on your behalf when the heathen gather to accuse you.

To the best boss I have ever known, my role model, our 'knight in shinning armour'. I say HAPPY BIRTHDAY and may you live long to celebrate many more years ahead.

PILOT TRAINING: 301 FTS GRADUATES NEW BATCH OF 10 STUDENT PILOTS

Ten trainees of Student Pilot Course 41B have completed their ab-initio pilot training at 301 Flying Training School (FTS), Kaduna. The graduands, awarded certificates over the weekend, are now ready to proceed for Basic Flying Training (BFT) on the fixed wing aircraft at 303 FTS Kano or similar facilities abroad. The graduating students were among the 25 original members of Student Pilot Course 41 that was later divided into two batches of 12 and 13 students. Six members of the first batch of students, constituting Student Pilot Course (SPC) 41A, were sent for rotary wing flying at the International Helicopter Flying Training School, Enugu. The remaining six, comprising 4 Nigerians and 2 Liberians, continued their training in 301 FTS and completed the course in 2015. Thereafter, the Nigerian officers proceeded to 303 FTS for BFT while their Liberian counterparts are presently undergoing further training at the International Aviation College, Ilorin. The remaining 3 members of SPC 41B are currently in the United States undergoing further training. In addition, 28 members of SPC 42 have commenced their flying training at home and abroad. There are 10 officers each in United Kingdom and South Africa, and 8 at the International Aviation College, Ilorin. The remaining 14 trainees are to take after the graduating members of SPC 41B for their ab-initio flying training at the 301 FTS, Kaduna.

Meanwhile, the graduands have been advised not to rest on their oars as they enter the next phase of their military flying training. Speaking as Guest of Honour at the graduation ceremony, AVM Mukhtar Muhammed (retired) gave the advice while addressing the graduating student pilots. “…you must know that this is just the beginning of your journey...I enjoin you therefore to sustain the same attitude of rugged determination as you continue with the next phase of their military flying training”, said the former Military Governor of Kaduna State. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar added his voice to the call on the graduands not to rest on their laurels but to strive for greater excellence as they move on to the next phase of their flying training. The Chief stated that the present NAF administration is committed to building capacity and has continued to receive the necessary backing from the Federal Government, one of which, he noted, is the provision in the 2016 budget for the acquisition of 10 Super Mushshak Trainer aircraft from Pakistan. The trainer aircraft, which are to be inducted into 301 FTS to enhance the quality of ab-initio programme, has capacity for full spectrum of military flying training.

In a related development, the graduation ceremony was used to commission new set of projects on NAF Base, Kaduna as part of the ongoing efforts towards uplifting and upgrading facilities on NAF Bases. The newly commissioned projects include residential accommodations, road network and recreational facilities, some of which were named after fallen heroes. The objective of the ongoing massive infrastructural development is to provide an enabling environment for personnel so that they could put in their best and move the NAF forward to fulfil its assigned constitutional roles and accomplish its mission in the most effective and efficient way.

TROOPS CLEAR BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS IN NGOSHE AND GAVA

Today, Tuesday 28th June 2016, troops of 121 Task Force Battalion, 26 Task Force Brigade, accompanied by a large number of Civilian JTF from Gwoza, embarked on a very aggressive patrol that dislodged remnants Boko Haram terrorists hibernating at Ngoshe and Gava villages, located close to Gwoza on the mountainous terrain.

The essence of the robust patrol which was supported by the Nigeria Air Force and Cameroonian Defence Forces who provided air cover and real time Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, was to clear the remnants of the terrorists hiding in the mountainous area and rescue all persons held hostages by the Boko Haram terrorists.

While advancing towards their objective in Ngoshe, the patrol team encountered Boko Haram terrorists. They have to clear the delay positions staged by the terrorists through the support of the Nigeria Air Force fighter jets.

Although the number of terrorists killed could not be ascertained, quite a number of them where seen falling over the mountains when engaged. It is equally believed several others escaped with gun shot wounds.

The troops were however able to recover quite a number of arms and ammunitions. These include; 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) tube, 4 RPG Bombs, 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1 Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle and 3 AK-47 rifles.

Other items recovered include 1 Sub-Machine Gun(SMG), 1 Locally made Pistol, a locally made Double-Barrel gun, 1 Smoke Grenade, 243 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 1 round of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.

They also recovered 18 rounds of MI16 rifle, 3 G3 Rifle magazines, 2 AK-47 magazines, 1 mobile telephone handset and a SIM card, as well as a pair of military desert camouflage uniform.

Other items were an address card, 3 Boko Haram terrorists flags and a Toyota Hilux vehicle painted in desert camouflage colour and motorcycles.

The troops did not find any hostage in Gava. However, they rescued 16 civilians held in Ngoshe prison, while many residents of the town saw it as an opportunity to flee from the town. Both the rescued and freed persons are being profiled by the troops.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

PRINCIPLES OF THE CONVENTIONAL ATTACK

The aim of the attack is to disrupt, disorganise and destroy the enemy.

The principles of the attack are as follows:

1.      The CoG must be targeted
2.      Fire-and-manoeuvre must be exploited
3.      The attack must be organised in depth
4.      The attack must be launched from a firm base
5.      The start of the attack must be secured
6.      The tempo and momentum of the attack must be maintained
7.      The attack must be supported by maximum firepower
8.      Assault forces must move close to supporting fire
9.      Support weapons must be brought forward as soon as possible
10.   Relentless execution.

The CoG must be targeted: The enemy’s Centre of Gravity and those strong points that protect it must be located and targeted. Their destruction will bring about a weakening or a collapse in the enemy’s defences. The destruction of the CoG is a key to victory. (The COG must not be confused with the Trinity of Gravity in unconventional warfare)

Fire-and-manoeuvre: The ability to manoeuvre and utilise direct and indirect firepower to achieve advantageous positions in relation to the enemy must be exploited at all times. All engagements are reliant on fire-and-manoeuvre. Fire without manoeuvre and manoeuvre without fire is of no value. Fire-and-manoeuvre adds to momentum.

Depth: Depth in the attacking forces ensures momentum, provides flexibility, space and options for manoeuvre and additionally reduces casualties amongst the attacking forces.

Firm bases: The attack must begin from a firm base and as the attack develops, commanders must continue establishing firm bases (overwatch positions). This allows the attacking forces to maintain “one foot on the ground” and thus retain balance during the attack. Firm bases make it difficult for the enemy to launch successful counter attacks. Firm bases are established on terrain that provides the attacking forces an advantage in terms of fire and observation.

Secured start: The attack must be launched from a secure position to prevent assault forces from making immediate contact with the enemy as this will make deployment difficult and derail fire plans, especially indirect fire plans. Starting an attack from an unsecured position will give the enemy the initiative, adversely affect own forces morale, create casualties and confusion within the attacking force and disrupt the attack plan.

Tempo and momentum: Maintaining the tempo and momentum of the attack will ensure sustained pressure on the enemy. Sustained pressure will prevent the enemy from being able to reorganise and counter the attack, bring his reserves forward or prepare new positions. Aggressive execution will result in a rapid, relentless attack

Maximum firepower: Effective, sustained direct and indirect fire will inflict casualties and reduce enemy resistance. Fire support is vitally important where exposed assault forces move across open terrain or breach obstacles without adequate cover.

Moving close to supporting fire: The assault forces must move as close as possible to the supporting direct and indirect fire. This will prevent the enemy from reorganising or reacting once the supporting fire is lifted.

Support weapons rapidly to front: The aim of the attack is to destroy the enemy, capture and occupy the objective and defend it. It must be expected that the enemy will try to launch a counter attack as soon as possible to recapture terrain it has lost. Support weapons should rapidly be brought forward to strengthen positions that have been captured from the enemy.

Relentless execution: Once the attack begins ie the attacking forces cross the start line, the execution must be relentless. Relentless execution will enhance momentum, weaken enemy resolve, add speed and tempo to the attack as well as unbalance the enemy.

The above principles are relevant to all types of conventional infantry attacks, regardless of whether they are launched in the day or at night, mounted or dismounted.

The commander who applies the principles of the attack will create the necessary space in which to manoeuvre his forces, exploit his firepower, grasp the initiative from the enemy and develop advantages as they occur.

TROOPS RECOVER ARMS AND AMMUNITION WHILE REPELLING BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS

Following combined clearance operations against Boko Haram terrorists from other parts of our neighbouring countries, escaping terrorists attempted an incursion into our troops position while in harbour at Kangarwa yesterday evening.

The troops dealt decisively with the fleeing terrorists and recovered arms and ammunitions from them in an encounter that lasted for about 3 hours.

Quite a number of the Boko Haram terrorists were killed, while several others escaped with gun shot wounds.
Unfortunately, 8 soldiers and 2 Civilian JTF were however wounded in action during the encounter. They have since been evacuated for proper medical attention. They are in stable condition and responding to treatment.

In addition, one of the troop’s Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle caught fire following a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) shot that affected the fuel tank and other electrical fittings. The troops however quickly put off the fire.

The gallant troops captured a number of motorcycles, 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 3 AK-47 Rifles, 6 Mortar Bombs, 4 Rocket Propelled Grenade Bombs, 3 Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Chargers, various types of ammunitions a 16/750 tyre and assorted types of drugs.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Nigerians are waking up already. Undergraduate now make drones as project. Recently, a guy just made tractor (see pics). Soon we would hear something about planes and helicopters too but to start such will require a lot. I would have added the pics of the drone this guy made but it will take a lot searching for it. He made it from local material and it can fly about 2kms high.
