Its sad. I think we need to re-define our national ethos and outlook on life.
Before the collapse of Aparthaid in SA, our national consciousness was wired towards the eradication of that ill. Our musicians led the way by singing songs encouraging the freedom fighters in SA and Zimbabwe and the general populace latched on to those songs and in their individual ways fought for the abolition of Apatheid.
With the collapse of Apartheid, a vacuum originated in our counsciousness, as our musical acts were left witn nothing to sing for and were thus left with no choice but to delve into production of music and musical videos that glorified sexual hedonism and debauchery as they felt this was the trend favoured by the popular culture.
The availability of cheap DVD sets and CDs, cheap phones with internet connection also led to an over-exposure of many people to cheap porn movies and this also added to the assault on our collective consciousness and led to much increase in sexual pervasiveness and sex crimes.
What could have helped uplift our collective counsciousness like reading of meaningful books like biographies, historical novels and the like were abandoned by us, unlike the western world which recognises the value of reading and intellectual stimulation.
Also those in the Arts who could have set the moral tone in music and movies failed to do this in the quest for quick profit.
The above issues mean that its time to have a national ethical movement, as proposed by a serving minister.
