this is a very question i dnt xpct any competent mathematician to fail. i'm highly surprised of wat hav been seeing so far. now lets go by d solution, "we need half of us + u (a single bird) alongside wit us to make hundred right?
now lets use (x) to represent number of birds flying prior to d encountering of d single bird.
lets divide x by two to represent number they were expecting to complete them hundred x/2.
x + x/2 +1(d single bird to make dem 100) = 100
collect like terms
x+x/2=100-1
=> x+x/2=99
l.c.m of d left equation
(2x + x)/2 =99
cross multiply
3x=198
now find x ( number of the birds on their way b4 they encounter dat single bird, remember we represent them wit x )
x= 66. (which implies dat 66 birds were on their way)
now lets go in a theorical way, wats half of 66? 33 right? now 66+33=99+1(the other bird)=100. clear now?

How about
x-x/2+1=100
(2x-x) /2=100-1
x/2=99
x=99*2
X=198

Note I never saw anywhere the question said the birds were less than 100. It just said the birds were not 100. Could be more or less.
