VIDEO: 3 Posers to deny Siasia Rio Gold

AfricanFootball.com identifies three problem areas for Samson Siasia’s team, which could derail Nigeria’s chances of reclaiming Olympic Gold in Rio in August.

HIGHLIGHTS MEXICO 1 NIGERIA 0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1XROgUB0w4

TACTICS, WHAT TACTICS?

Tactics have never been Samson Siasia’s strongest suit and that was why his Dutch sidekick Simon Kalika.

And now without Kalika, this shortcoming is clearly being exposed.

Flying Eagles coach Emmanuel Amuneke twice won the war of tactics when they faced the U23s in challenge matches.

The Olympic team complained they were not fully represented when both teams first clashed and the U20s ran away 2-1winners, but they certainly ran out of excuses when they paraded a team led by skipper Azubuike Okechukwu and boasting the likes of Oghenekaro Etebo, Usman Mohammed, Taiwo Awoniyi, Godwin Saviour and Stanley Amuzie, yet still lost.

Player for player, the Olympic team had more quality, but again they were outsmarted and outgunned by a more organised Flying Eagles team, who made the most of their team play and youthfulness.

WOBBLING DEFENCE

The absence of injured Segun Oduduwa in the heart of the defence of the Dream Team has continued to be a big bother for Siasia.

Despite his rawness, Oduduwa was the man who took responsibility in the back four.

Former skipper Erhun Obanor is slow and clumsy to do so in the absence of the Nath Boys of Lagos star.

Against Mexico on Sunday, the team experimented with Turkey-based Saturday Keigo and the versatile Ndifreke Effiong as centre-halves.

That may well explain why Siasia has insisted on central defenders and full internationals Godfrey Obaobona, Kenneth Omeruo and William Troost-Ekong for Rio.

Fullbacks Stanley Amuzie and Sincere Seth are fantastic going forward, but they will need to first take care of their primary business of defending the goal than surging forward to join the attack.

SCORING GOALS STILL A MAJOR CONCERN

With a settled midfield combination of skipper Okechukwu and Usman Mohammed coupled with wing play of Stanley Dimgba and Godwin Saviour, the Nigeria U23s are known to create chances upon chances, but putting away these openings has remained a great concern.

Tunisia-based striker Junior Ajayi and later Taiwo Awoniyi scored the goals for the team, but lately they have both struggled to do so.

The slump in form of Liverpool striker Awoniyi, for one, has been most disturbing a year after his goals won Nigeria the U20 African championship in Dakar, Senegal.

It was hoped Watford striker Odion Ighalo will solve the team’s goal-scoring problems, but his English club will not release him for the tournament, so too another viable option Kelechi Iheanacho from Manchester City.

Why wasn’t Victor Osimhen considered on the 35-man provisional squad?

Ezekiel Imoh and AS Roma front man Sadiq Umar could well be the strikers Siasia will now rely on for the goals on the way to Gold in Rio.

Siasia confirms Chelsea star Mikel for Rio Olympics

Mikel

by Samm Audu

Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi will feature at the Rio Olympics after initial fears he will not, according to Nigeria Olympic team coach Samson Siasia.

Siasia himself had raised fears over the availability of the Chelsea midfielder as one of the over-aged players for the Olympics in August.

But he has now confirmed Mikel will feature in Rio in August.

“Mikel has confirmed his availability,” Siasia disclosed.

“We have some other players who have promised to join us and they have shown commitment like Wilfred Ndidi, who has assured us that he will join us in America.

“Other players who will be available are goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi and Kenneth Omeruo. These are the players who are confirmed for now.”

This should be some cheering news for Siasia, who will be without several players not released by their foreign clubs.

Watford striker Odion Ighalo, Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City and Alex Iwobi from Arsenal have opted out of the tournament after their clubs blocked them as it is not on the FIFA calendar.

Siasia pained after Arsenal ace Iwobi, father fail to keep promises

Alex Iwobi

Nigeria U23 coach Samson Siasia has revealed he has been left disappointed after Alex Iwobi and his father failed to keep the promises they made to him over the Arsenal forward’s participation at the Rio Olympics.

Arsenal have stopped Iwobi from the Olympics after initially agreeing to release him late for the summer games.

“Alex Iwobi is not coming. I tried to call his father, but he wasn’t picking my calls. He used to call me frequently when he wanted his son to play for the country, but now that we need his son for the Olympics football tournament, he is not picking my calls,” lamented Siasia.

“But there is no problem, Alex remains my boy, I love him like my own son, but I am just disappointed that he and his father couldn’t keep the promises they made to me.”

Incidentally, the 20-year-old Iwobi first trained with Siasia’s U23s before he changed his international allegiance from England to make his debut for the Super Eagles last year.

If Mexico were a little clinical, we would have been disgraced. Home advantage was non existent as the stadium was relatively empty.

Those players should improve the defence but who will score?

It is possible that they still do decently but certainly no chance at winning except with huge luck.
My brother, home advantage is not only abt the crowd.
Weather/climate, altitude, familiarity with the playing turf and "i must nt be beaten on my soil" psychology all add up to influence the balance of play . Bring that Mexican team to Kaduna or Calabar and lets see whether they would nt b beaten.

In as much as we have criticised Siasia all along, it seems he has been to some extent vindicated by the withdrawal of our top U23 players. Simon, Iheanacho and Iwobi have never really been part Siasia's programmes all along. Had he relied so much on those players by now he would have been running helter scelter scouting for replacements. Isaac Success too would nt have been released by Watford

However, He still should have given d following strikers a chance: Chikatara, Obaje and Samuel.
With d presence of Omeruo, Ndidi(if played as CB) and Troost Ekong i blieve our defense would b greatly improved. Mikel's presence in the Midfield would complement d efforts of Azubuike, Etebor, Ndidi(if played as DMF),Popoola, Usman, Saviour and Dimgba. Our Midfield is descent enough.
For the strikers, If Ighalo does nt show up we are on a long thing. Imoh Ezekiel is on that list bt i fear for him nt bc he is nt good enough bt bc he is nt a "Siasia's boy". Awoniyi and Ajayi jst like at CAF U23 would b our arrow heads in d attack. That is nightmarish to me. Awoniyi dat would nt even make d starting 11 in d current U20 team.

It is so logical as you explained it. However, just like the second leg against Egypt I won't be shocked if Siasia puts up an illogical line up in Brazil.

I agree with you. We have enough materials to remedy the team. As you accurately pointed out, Chikatara, Obaje and Samuel can bring in fire power to push the team.

Let us watch and hope Coach Siasia improves as the Super Eagles main players come in.

Coach Siasia, I beg, let Mikel stay deep ad shield the defence.

We can't be gunning for Olympic Gold and we're begging for money - Siasia

Nigeria Olympic team training in Atlanta, USA

by Samm Audu

Coach of Nigeria Olympic team Samson Siasia has raised alarm over the team’s shoddy preparations for the Rio Olympics, saying “we cannot be going for Gold and we are begging for money.”

The country’s team to the Rio Olympics in August are training in Atlanta, United States of America, ahead of the summer games, but the outspoken Siasia has been far from impressed with his team’s build-up.

“It is not a good image to go to the Olympics while trying to beg for money around, actually begging people for money to take care of the Nigerian Olympic team. How are we going to win gold, if we keep begging for money to take care of our athletes?,” lamented Siasia.

“We don’t have money. We are in the (United States of) America now without any money. So, it is a big problem.

“We are without any money in our pocket. There are no funds coming from anywhere. That is not a good thing.

"When you have players who are not motivated and encouraged, but you want them to come and do a miracle. Everybody needs to be encouraged at one time or the other.”

He added: “We just want to appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to come to the rescue of sports in the country as our father and sports-loving President.

“The sports sector is dying and it is adversely affecting the Olympic teams that have qualified to represent Nigeria at the Rio Olympics Games, not just football, but the other (seven) sports that Nigeria will campaign in in Rio.

“The reason is well known which is the sports ministry needs to be funded adequately. This has adversely affected the Nigeria Football Federation too. Everybody is borrowing.

“This has to stop. President Buhari has to help us by approving some funds for our Olympic teams to prepare well. If the funds are not there, how are you going to prepare to win gold?”

Siasia’s team will play two warm-up matches in the USA before they depart to Brazil on July 29.

EXCLUSIVE: Leicester record buy Ahmed Musa costs first Euro club $320,000

Ahmed Musa - CSKA Moscow smiling to the bank after selling Nigeria star to Leicester City

by Samm Audu

AfricanFootball.com can exclusively reveal that Leicester City record buy Ahmed Musa cost his first European club VVV Venlo $320,000 six years ago.

CSKA Moscow are now smiling to the bank as they will pocket more than $21 million from Premier League champions Leicester for the 23-year-old Nigeria international to post a staggering profit after they reportedly paid about six million Euros to VVV four years ago.

Modest Dutch club VVV splashed $320,000 on Ahmed Musa, who finished as Goal King of the Nigeria league playing as a right winger with 18 goals on loan to Kano Pillars in the 2009/10 season.

A top official told AfricanFootball.com: “VVV paid $320,000 to Musa’s agent when they signed him. Pillars got some of the cash, but the chunk of it went to his London-based agent and Aminchi Academy, who had loaned the player to the Kano club.”

And two years and eight goals later for VVV, the Nigeria star was then snapped up by Russian army club CSKA.

Iwobi eager to start new season with Arsenal

Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi has resumed training with his London club, Arsenal and the 20-year old has declared that he is eagerly looking ahead to the upcoming season.

Iwobi who was initially pencilled down to feature for the Nigeria U-23 team at the Olympics has been denied that chance by the Gunners but the player seems to have gotten over that and he is now ready for the pre-season challenge.

“Back In Training & Looking Forward To The Season!” Iwobi tweeted after the maiden session with the Gunners on Tuesday.
Before their first competitive fixture of the season against Liverpool on August 13, Arsenal’s preseason calendar indicates that they will be up against Western Sydney Wanderers, MLS All Star Team, Guadalajara, Viking and Manchester City in friendly matches.

Having enjoyed a good run in the last set of matches in the EPL last season Iwobi will keen to show that his displays were no fluke

Don't Judge Dream Team VI Now - Nwosu
Augustine Akhilomen

https://informationng.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/6ea6a4cc5653d117898d7db2c79b2f77.jpg
Former Green Eagles midfielder, Henry Nwosu says the Nigeria's U-23 team shouldn't be judged by their poor performances in some of the international friendly matches played so far.

The team which lost to Mexico 1-0 on Sunday morning in a warm-up game ahead of the Rio Olympic Games has remained unconvincing and shattered.

With just few weeks to the commencement of the Olympics, the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner told Soccernet.com.ng that the team would bounce back to reckoning when the tournament starts proper on August 5.

"It's a normal thing to criticize a team when they are not doing well prior to a tournament irrespective of whether it's a friendly match or not," Nwosu said.

"I am optimistic that the team would learn a lot from the defeat they've experienced and surprise Nigerians at the Rio Olympics Games.

"As far as I am concern, what's the benefit of winning 10 friendly matches without winning a game at the main tournament?

"Let's give Samson Siasia the necessary support and not pull him down with criticism. He's human being like us and should be encouraged." he concluded.

The Dream Team has lost five out of their six warm-up games played recently against Nigeria's Flying Eagles (twice), Korea, Denmark and Mexico

I do not think any reasonably Nigerian should blame the NFF neither the Coach for this one. He simply could not impress the Coaching crew when given the chance to do so with the Olympic team.

I will certainly not miss him. I do not see England using him, unless he improves his game seriously.

Nigeria Yet To Beat England For Services Of Oduwa As Winger Reports At Tottenham For Pre-Season

https://www.allnigeriasoccer.com/football_pics/34660Oduwa.jpg
Nathan Oduwa has put the disappointment of missing out on Nigeria’s provisional roster for the Olympic Games behind him, and has reported for pre-season training at Tottenham Hotspur.

For the past five days, the winger has been at Hotspur Way taking part in gym work and training on the pitch ahead of the Development squad’s first competitive fixture of the new season.

The 20-year-old Oduwa racked up 13 caps for England at youth level, all of them coming in friendly fixtures, before he pledged his international future to Nigeria, making his debut against Brazil in March.

The irony is that the Nigeria Football Federation has not beaten the English FA in the race to secure the international future of the talented winger, bearing in mind that his four caps for Nigeria U23s were in non-competitive games.

And the FA could take advantage of that loophole and approach him to represent England again, using Alex Iwobi’s previous situation as a case study.

Tottenham Hotspur U21s are managed by former England international of Nigerian descent Ugo Ehiogu.

The introduction of those defenders will tighten the defence but Mikel in the defensive midfield brings something very few players will bring to the Olympics. A vast wealth of experience playing a particular role. Mikel is one of the World's most experienced defensive midfielders in the game today.

Playing Mikel in another role will mean not utilizing his experience to the highest level. That is what the Olympics overage spots is for. Why play Azubuike there when we have to one of the most experienced defensive midfielders in the team?

Adding Mikel to part of the defensive set up will bring a rock solid shield to the team and a possessive pivot to sit the team. This will aid the attacking players to play with more freedom and confidence.

I still opt for Mikel to play deep and shield the defence.

Siasia: Iwobi's father let me down

igeria U-23 coach Samson Siasia is disappointed that Arsenal star Alex Iwobi and his father have not responded to the call to participate in the Olympic Games.

The 20-year-old Iwobi actually trained with Siasia’s U-23 side before he went on to switch his international allegiance from England to Nigeria last year, then going on to make his Super Eagles debut.

But with Arsenal not keen on letting the promising young striker participate in Rio, Siasia has had to accept that he will be without Iwobi for the Olympics, but is disappointed about how the situation panned out.

"Alex Iwobi is not coming. I tried to call his father, but he wasn’t picking my calls. He used to call me frequently when he wanted his son to play for the country, but now that we need his son for the Olympics football tournament, he is not picking my calls," Siasia was quoted as saying by the AfricanFootball website.

Siasia adds however that he will not hold a grudge against the player:

"But there is no problem, Alex remains my boy, I love him like my own son, but I am just disappointed that he and his father couldn’t keep the promises they made to me."

Nigeria youth international Dele Alampasu has put aside the disappointment of losing out on a spot in the Nigerian team for the football event of the Rio 2016 Olympics and has shift attention towards helping his Portuguese team do well in their first season in the top flight of Portuguese league.

Alampasu applied and was granted a visa to train with the Nigerian team in their pre Olympic camp in the USA but was surprisingly not listed when coach Samson Siasia relesed his 35 man preliminary list for the Olympics.

Last season 19 year old Alampasu played second fiddle to first choice goalkepper Luis Ribeiro but distinguished himself in the two cup games he kept goal FC Porto and Famalicao earning high praises for his performances particularly against FC Porto.

Voted as the best goalkepper at the U-17 World cup in the UAE in 2013, the shot stopper is already eyeing the position of first choice goalkepper next season when they will campaign in the Portuguese top flight.

” I have moved on, you can’t dwell on what you can’t change and I strongly believe my time will come in the national team, all am focused on now is doing well for CD Feirense to become the first choice next season when we play in the top flight league” He told Owngoalnigeria.com.

The cash-strapped Nigeria Football Federation is in a race against time to clear the kits supplied by Nike for the Nigeria U23s and other national teams ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Due to the shortage of kits, the Dream Team VI players traveled to Mexico for their friendly against the North Americans wearing different apparels, contrary to the agreement the Federation reached with the American company.

A top source told allnigeriasoccer.com : “The Nike kits have arrived but the NFF needs five to six million naira to clear the kits from the ports.

“The Nigeria U23 players were not properly dressed when they traveled to Mexico . The players wore different kits, Adidas and Nike.

“They have also complained that there is no money for them in the United States, that they have less than $1,000 to spend, all the players. ”

The Nigeria Football Federation penned a kit deal with Nike in 2015.

Former Dream Team Goalie backing Siasia to Cruise in Rio

Former Dream Team goalkeeper Vanzenkin Ambrose has stated that Nigerians need not worry about the run of unpleasant results posted by the Dream Team VI.

Samson Siasia and his team will open their account in August against Japan and Ambrose has said that it will always be very tough to get the best out of the players in the friendly games as Nigerian players will naturally rise to the occasion in competitive fixtures as against expectations in friendlies.

Amoo defends Dream Team VI poor result…expects Mikel and Co in camp

https://footballlive.ng/footballnews/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Untitled-14.png
Dream Team Assistant Coach, Fatai Amoo insists that the team achieved its objective against Mexico U-23 in a tune game for the Rio Olympics despite the 1-0 defeat.

Amoo told footballlive.ng that the Mexico side enjoyed home support and were very comfortable playing in front of a familiar crowd; which is a situation the Nigerian player will have to get used to when the competition gets underway in August.

Samson Siasia led two batches of the 35 players provisionally invited for the pre-tournament camping tour where he also expects to be joined by the remaining players.

Amoo, who led a second string team to a 1-0 win against Brazil’s U23s in a commemorative friendly in March, also expressed hope the expected players will beef up the quality of the team.

Particularly, Mikel Obi, Alex Iwobi and Kenneth Omeruo are expected to join the camp.

"Let's give Samson Siasia the necessary support and not pull him down with criticism. He's human being like us and should be encouraged." he concluded... Henry Nwosu.

This is not just criticising Coach Siasia about just losing but the manner he went about preparing the team for the competition.

What we want is for Coach Siasia to make right logical selections and stop sentimental selections.

Coach Siasia still has a chance for redemption. He should use it wisely.

TheGoodJoe:

The introduction of those defenders will tighten the defence but Mikel in the defensive midfield brings something very few players will bring to the Olympics. A vast wealth of experience playing a particular role. Mikel is one of the World's most experienced defensive midfielder in the game today.

Good points.

But u know at national team level Mikel has played far more as a CMF than as a DMF.
With d withdrawal of Iwobi, Etebor would have to step into d AM position leaving us with no outstanding U23 CMF. Azubuike and Ndidi can cover up as DMF of which I feel they are solid enough to face the competition and challenges at this level. Mikel's experience as a CMF at d national team level would also prove very vital in this case. We may need him more as a CMF.

Okay. I understand and get your point. Mikel has the experience to bring a balance to the midfield. His experience will also help in covering the middle gap.

I agree completely.

The few games I watched Etebor, he did not look explosive to me. Usman Mohammed looks more creative and makes direct runs. I feel Usman Mohammed will be better in the attack midfield role than Etebor.

What do you think, Etebor or Usman?

My point exactly.

My only concern may jst be that he may b off pace. This crop of U23 as far as i have watched them have been playing with so much pace. Etebor and Dimgba are very quick players and would need a CMF that would lay d balls quickly and in a sleek manner. Ifeanyi Mathew would have perfectly fitted into dat role bt na Siasia know o. Siasia needs to really work on integrating Mikel as quickly as possible into the main stream of that team. I hope he reports to camp early enough.

Though i am a fan of the EPL, I follow the NPFL a lot.I pay special interest in Etebor, Ifeanyi Mathew, Junior Ajayi, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Nwobodo among orhers.

Some major strenght of Etebor are in his pace, direct play & always forward moving play. He also has d physical strength. Dnt forget his set piece abilities.

Usman Mohammed may b a more exposed player bt he is nt a much talented as Etebor.

I think Etebor would bring more to d attack jst like at d CAF U23 more so now dat our attack is looking very blunt.

That pace point is my problem with Mikel in the central role. His tracking back is slow. Mikel looks exceptional when he just sits in front of the defence and cleans up.

The role makes his lack of pace unnoticeable. That is why I wanted Coach Siasia to call Raheem Lawal as one of the overage players to play the CMF with Mikel in the DMF. Usman Mohammed AMF.

That would be tight and solid but Coach Siasia chose Akpeyi as one of the overage and killed that spot.

I understand the gap created but I think Mikel should still play were he is most exceptional. The leader of the team should play were he would be exceptional. The goal leakage will reduce. Usman Mohammed and Etebor can play in front of Mikel.

I see Usman more as a CMF with also defensivd abilities which means he can also play as a DMF while Etebor is AM with CMF abilities. Only time i saw Etebor as a DMF was in d CAF U23 semis against Senegal.

I think Etebor would bring more to d attack jst like at d CAF U23 more so now dat our attack is looking very blunt.

I have not watched much of both but at the CHAN, Oliseh clearly hid us from seeing how good Usman Mohammed is.

Remember Usman Mohammed coming off the bench in CHAN against Niger and changing the game. Usman Mohammed is actually a playmaker as we saw in CHAN. In that Niger game, it was after the introduction of Usman Mohammed the goals flooded.

In the final game against Guinea, Usman Mohammed was the best player on the field. The only thing I can think is Oliseh did not like Usman Outshining his love child Onobi and he took out the best player on the field, Usman Mohammed in the first half and the team crumbled.

As I said, I have not watched much of them so I can not tell who is better to play creatively. However, from what I saw in CHAN, Usman Mohammed is very direct in his play, makes direct runs, very skillful on the ball and takes out opposing players with his skills. He also has an eye for goals.

Nice to read a nice review of Etebor from you. That means either way Coach Siasia goes, we can be confident in the AMF role.

The challenge is the DMF/CMF roles.

My brother, our problem is nt in s midfield. Even with d massive withdrawals we still have options to debate about.

What do u think is the way forward for our attack?
