OPERATION GAMA AIKI: F-7Ni FIGHTER AIRCRAFT STRIKES BOKO HARAM TERRORIST LOCATION IN NORTHERN BORNO

The Air Component of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE recorded another major success yesterday in its air campaign against the Boko Haram Terrorists(BHT) as 2 x F-7Ni fighter aircraft struck a terrorists’ location at Northern Borno. The location lies between Tumbum Rego and Malkonory and is about 25km from Kangarwa where own surface forces are currently harboured. The location, as can be seen from the enclosed footage, harbours BHT makeshift structures and about 4-6 clusters of solar panels which are used by the Terrorists to power communications equipment and for lighting.

The latest strike is part of the air operations conducted by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in support of the efforts by own surface forces and the Multi National Joint Task Force to rid the northern part of Borno of the remnants BHTs in an operation codenamed “OPERATION GAMA AIKI”. The location, prior to the strike yesterday, had been under surveillance for sometimes but was reported active by a NAF Beechcraft aircraft on Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission. Thereafter, the Fighter aircraft were immediately scrambled for interdiction. The success of this operation is another major setback for the BHTs even as the NAF intensifies air operations in the Northeast against the insurgents. More so, it is instructive to note that the mission yesterday was conducted by crew amid the Sallah celebration. This brings to fore the commitment of NAF personnel towards successfully bringing the hostility in the Northeast to an end within the shortest possible time.

The BHT attack on Bosso, it was a massive and deadly attack on that military post. The worst part of it is that those bastards cart away cache of weapons.

It's just eminent to me that BHT some where and anytime is capable of lurching massive attacks at any military post, where I do nor know...... embarassed

I suspect they have successfully withdrawn their main combat elements and heavy equipment to the Nigerian Niger border. Like we have always known, an active insurgency cannot be won by military activities alone.

We must rebuild those border areas and initiate real commercial activities there is the insurgency is to be permanently defeated.

You av to see the amount of weapons and vehicle captured. It's enough to sustain BHT operations/attack around vulnerable areas for years.

rebuilding borders would not only be enough. Bordering countries should intensify the war against BHT, considering the proximity of borders we shear with three countries.

SUICIDE BOMBERS EXPLODES IN DAMBOA

-WARNING DISTURBING IMAGE-

At the early hours of today, precisely at about 5.15am, two Boko Haram terrorists suicide bombers attacked Damboa. The first suicide bomber targeted Damboa Central Mosque but due to stringent security measures, he could not gain entry. Obviously frustrated, he exploded and died near the Central mosque.

However, the second bomber veered off and gained entry into another smaller mosque and detonated the bomb killing himself and 6 other worshippers and injuring one other person. The wounded has been evacuated to a hospital while efforts are on to clear the rubbles. Troops and other security agencies have been mobilized to the area.

In a related development, suspected elements of Boko Haram terrorists ina survival bid attacked Gaskeri village ahead of Dalori yesterday evening, where they killed 3 civilian vigilantes and looted foodstuffs. Troops have been mobilized and they are on the suspected terrorists’ trail.

Similarly, as part of the efforts to keep Maiduguri-Dikwa-Gamboru Ngala road open and safe, troops of 3 Battalion, 22 Brigade yesterday escorted 4 trailers and 44 other vehicles from Dikwa to Gamboru Ngala yesterday. The escort duties would continue.

Troops of 3 Battalion ambushed Boko Haram terrorists at Gajibo crossing point and recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with magazine, a transistor radio and a knife on 6th July 2016.
Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Niger moves Su-25s to southern border

Niger has moved much of its air force to a new base it is building at the airfield close to the town of Diffa on the Nigerian border, satellite imagery shows.

Airbus Defence and Space imagery from 7 March shows that two Sukhoi Su-25 ground attack jets were at the Diffa airstrip on that date. The Niger Air Force operates two Su-25s that it acquired from Ukraine in 2013. These were previously based at Diori Hamani International Airport outside the capital Niamey, more than 1,100 km to the west.

A Cessna 208B turboprop, two Mi-24 assault helicopters, and one Mi-8/17 transport helicopter were also at Diffa on 7 March. The United States delivered two 208Bs that have been modified for the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) role to Niger in October 2015.

The imagery also showed extensive construction work was under way at the facility, with new parking areas already built for the Su-25 and three hangars under construction.

Another image taken on 28 May shows that the two smaller hangars had been completed by that date. An additional 208B was present on that date and only one Su-25 could be seen, but the number of helicopters remained unchanged.

Fresh markings have also been painted on the runway and the base now has a complete security perimeter and additional vehicle-inspection area at the entrance point.

This is very bad

How come there was no air support from either of Nigeria, Chad or the host country?

The base was scarcely defended. If HESCO barriers were too costly, digging a trench round the base would have cost only manual labour and thus delay the gun trucks.

This attack just proves that MNJTF has a lot to improve on with regards to coordination

However, the fact that BHT has not been able to stage this kind of attack and succeed in Nigeria for a very long time now shows how far we have come. Kudos to NA.

What scares me is the shear volume of heavy equipment these terrorists captured in bosso. For so long in Nigeria raids have succeeded only in killing 5-6 individuals each time and capturing virtually unservicable AK47s and dane guns. Where were BH able to mobilize such numbers of men and equipment that they could overwhelm such a well armed and manned base. With what they captured here they are now twice as dangerous and likely more confident.

If we are wise this is a time to prepare for similar raids especially as the dry season returns both along the border and maybe further inside Nigeria

Honestly there should be dedicated air-force for the Multinational Joint Task Force. And am still afraid with the amount of weapons captured, very soon BHT will carry out an attack on a military base.

Secondly what's that cache of weapons doing in that military base and I think there is not enough soldiers on ground to defend/hold the base.

Stop been an alarmist. Niger moved those assets down because of the terror attacks in Bosso. NAF doesn't need to re-arm because of Niger, an irrelevant country with 2 SU-25 aircrafts.

The base was over-run, it's nothing new in a conflict like this. The base was poorly defended that's all. When Boko-Haram overran Baga or Gwoza, they captured much more equipment than what they got in Bosso.

A conflict like this would always be overdrawn, i mean Turkey is a very good example. Some parts of Southern Turkey looks like Syria.

Bases have to first be properly defended, helicopters would not always be available. Neither are helicopters the answer to a poorly defended base. There has to first be a complete re-engineering of base defence, a coordinated approach to securing bases and identified kill zones were the enemy would be slaughtered. This means having different layers, example, like we have done with building trenches around our bases.

agree trenchs are needed
but if they don't have time to build or simply a temporary base
scout unit like scout cars(or simply toyota)patrolling around and snipers hidden in crutial positons will not cost much

if helicoper or scout car is expensive http://www.flir.cn/suas/content/?id=73063 then this toy cost only a second hand toyota. can provide at least 10 km air scout.

if enemy spotted 10kms away you have enough time to respond wether defend calling for reinforcement or retreat
Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by Nobody: 8:14pm On Jul 09, 2016
@all
there are SOPs which should be followed to allow successful base defense.

from the video it is kind of clear that global SOPs were not followed .

1.lack of defensive positions within and outside the base from which enemy advances can be stopped or destroyed or channeled into pre-prepared fire zones aka defenders area of engagement (EAs).

generally there are five kinds of defensive battle positions—primary, alternate, supplementary, subsequent, and strong point which must be factored while laying down base defense

a.The primary position is the position that covers the enemy’s most likely avenue of approach.
b.An alternate position is a defensive position that a unit occupies when the primary position becomes untenable or unsuitable for carrying out the assigned task.
c.A supplementary position is a defensive position located within a unit’s assigned area of operation that provides the best sectors of fire and defensive terrain along an avenue of approach that is not the primary avenue where the enemy is expected to attack.
d.A subsequent position is a position that a unit expects to move to during the course of the battle.
e.A strong point is a heavily fortified battle position tied to a natural or reinforcing obstacle to create an anchor for the defense or to deny the enemy decisive or key terrain.

2.lack of barriers within the base perimeter to limit and canalize penetrations by terrorist groups via forced dispersion into selected area of engagement. natural and man made obstacles are best utilized to canalize the attacking force into the defenders engagement areas (EAs).

3.lack of chock points. chock points increases the enemy’s vulnerability by forcing him to concentrate his forces.

4.failure to cover the barriers and chock points by necessary weapons. failure to optimally utilize existing weapons for guaranteed base defense,
that is location and direction of fire of crew-served weapons are not overlapping and supporting each other.

5.lack of locations of target reference points and pre-planned fires, as a result during surprise attack, the defenders loose precious time on target acquisition.

6.lack of external base patrols and off the base / outward perimeter forward observation posts, which would have provided early warning of any impending attack.

7.lack of reactionary force for out flanking and attacking the rear of the enemy.

8.lack of well planned Final protective fires (FPFs) which are immediately available pre-planned barriers of fires designed to impede enemy movement across defensive lines or areas.mainly indirect- fire weapons provide FPFs.

9.lack of pre-planned MANEUVER routes within the base for quick reinforcement.

10.inability to destroy equipment and ammo on failure of base defense due to no clear cut or laid down RETREAT / WITHDRAW SOP.

and many more, this is not to criticize but to help to prevent such incidents.

disclaimer: not all of the above points are relevant to the above video, some are while some are not.

also trenches do not guarantee fool proof security unless they are designed to stop a tank, terrorists always do recon missions and keep their targets under surveillance to figure out the troops defensive positions and deployment pattern and base defenses.

that is why base defense must have barriers which conceals and breaks direct line of sight observation.
further troop position and deployment must be concealed as much as possible.
sniper/spotter nests are best to counter enemy observers.

never under estimate your enemy.
they will always find a weak point.
point being you must decide the cost to be paid by the enemy while trying to breach the said weak point.

and hire the Israelis for consultancy they are best in this business, this is my personal guarantee since i worked with them.

Trenches.............

The major Nigeria army that was overrun, there where enough trenches. Infact in the video you will find dead soldiers inside the trenches, Nigeria bases that av seing are protected with enough trenches.

In my own opinion, those bases do not av enough man power due to the vast land area of the war front so there are many check points and mini-military bases. So BHT use overwhelming firepower and numbers to run such bases. The last that was done in nigerian soil, they captured a BHT -4E, thank God for the airforce and quick response of the 72 MSF, They where able to recover the btr-4E and some other equipment.

With the quantity of ammo as seen captured in the video, i can't say that fire base was lacking in heat.

Sniper/DMR
Well structured and layered trenches
Razor wires
Effective communication and maneuver during contact
Excellent pair of balls(preferably steel coated in Ethiopia) grin

This could have been avoided

You are right when Baga and gwazo was overran BHT then there where many factors responsible for that? The army was badly equipped. No t72s, BMP's and morale was too low then...!

And even during the advent of new equipment, BHT still overran some base. But my point his not these time when BHT as being degraded totally, it's like we are going front and backward's. The amount of weapons and vehicle captured his enough to sustain BH operations.

Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by SergeAlain: 10:04pm On Jul 09, 2016
Bidexxi you have hit the nail on the head.

The key to combat success essentially lies in the quality of troops at your disposal. Quality as per training, combat experience and morale.
Point defense is not an easy job. The attacker has most of the advantages and in most cases has superior intelligence, since they would have pre-scouted their objectives and most of the time superior numbers.

The defenders can only equalize the odds through diligence and hard-work before the attack i.e. digging trenches, zeroing in their mortars and artillery on likely routes of advance, continuous tireless patrolling of the perimeters etc..

When troops are poorly motivated or inexperienced it is tough to get them to put in all of this work especially when after some time it begins to look like the attack will never come. That is where air superiority can make up for a lot of mistakes on the ground!!!
