Nigerian universities fail to make list of world’s top 1,000

The Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) has just released its 2016 ranking of universities across the world.

Sadly, no university in Nigeria made the list of the world’s top 1,000.

The ranking, released on Monday, placed Harvard University, United States, on top as the best higher institution in the world, followed by Stanford University, also in the U.S.

Another school in the U.S, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the third best in the world.

Two universities in the United Kingdom, University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, are ranked fourth and fifth respectively.

Five other American universities are also ranked within the top 10 – they are Columbia University, sixth position; University of California, Berkley, seventh; University of Chicago, eighth; Princeton University, ninth; and Yale University, 10th.

The U.S has a total number of 224 universities among the top 1,000, followed by China, with 90.

Japan has 74, while the United Kingdom has 65.

Others are: Germany, 56; France, 48; Italy, 48; Spain, 41; South Korea, 36; Canada, 32; Australia, 27.

In Africa, only universities in South Africa and Egypt made the list. South Africa has five, while Egypt has four.

For South Africa, the five universities and their rankings, according to the CWUR, are: University of Witwatersrand, 176th; University of Cape Town, 265th; Stellenbosch University, 329th; University of KwaZulu-Natal, 468th; and the University of Pretoria, 697th.

The four from Egypt are Cairo University, 771st; Ain Shams University, 960th; Mansoura University, 985th; and Alexandria University, 995th.

No Nigerian university also made the list in 2015.

CWUR said it used eight objectives and robust indicators to rank the world’s top 1,000 universities, and listed them as follows:

1) Quality of Education, measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals relative to the university’s size [25%]

2) Alumni Employment, measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have held CEO positions at the world’s top companies relative to the university’s size [25%]

3) Quality of Faculty, measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals [25%]

4) Publications, measured by the number of research papers appearing in reputable journals [5%]

5) Influence, measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals [5%]

6) Citations, measured by the number of highly-cited research papers [5%]

7) Broad Impact, measured by the university’s h-index [5%]

cool Patents, measured by the number of international patent filings [5%]

Thanks to our Politicians!

Instead of funding Nigerian universities, they prefer splashing the funds on their "private" luxury!
Instead of appointing the university administrators on merit, they prefer appointing base on nepotism, cronyism and party affiliation.

Upon all, they will still send their wards to the top universities in this list angry

Its not surprising nah. Lol, the only surpising thing here is that the OP expects Nigerian institution to be on the list. Lol. Even 1st - 2000th, e still no go dey.

Being the best in anything is not magic. Work, sufficient work has to be put in order to be tops.

Na oyibo man once talk am, "the heights achieved by great men wasn't done by a sudden flight".

In the past 20 years, have you ever met the child of a prominent Nigerian or politician in your school or your class? You think they don't have sense?

Let's them continue feasting on our treasury. Its official buffet - serve yourself! While we keep shout PDP and APC on Nairaland.

Seriously, thunder will rape the destinies of all the useless politicians who have succeeded (and are still in the process) of turning this country into a shameful disgrace.

Please can somebody tell me the processes involved in 'renouncing' one's nationality? I don tire for Nigeria! Nothing is working!!! :-(

new have it that over

75,000 Nigeria Students Currently Studying in Ghana
unfortunately the Ghanian situation is not even better

because functionally Nigeria graduate are still better if not for the incessant strike
the Ghanian case :

•They are largely sub-standard and affiliates or satellite campuses of foreign-based universities. Quality control mechanisms are mostly absent.

•Weak infrastructure, with institutions housed in rented, inadequate and in some cases incomplete structures.

•Curricula are controlled by overseas home campuses without input from Ghana’s National Board of Accreditation.

•Prospective students do not have to possess required numbers of credits before being admitted: such students register for remedial courses to make up the shortfall while simultaneously undertaking undergraduate courses.

•Some Nigerian students are used as ‘middle-men’ to attract fellow citizens to institutions and are financially rewarded based on the number of candidates they lure, also known as affiliate marketing in financial accounting.

Hmmm. University should be as autonomous as possible even in terms of funding.

So sad we couldn't make it to top 1000 maybe if dem extend the list to 10,000 una go see our university there.

Not surprised.

When the government has spent more on Legislature salaries and perks than on education.

When the government believes in building new universities rather than maintaining, renovating and expanding existing ones.

When the little funds made available for the educational sector dwindle or get "missing" before the universities can access them.

When students cannot go into exam halls without planning how to "share" information (that's cheating, by the way) or carry 'chips".

When you can sort your way through school.

When lecturers accept or demand bribes or sex for grades.

When lecturers fail students and frustrate the process of "calling for scripts".

When students (instead of workers) can go on strike for months and they actually think it's a welcome holiday.

When ASUU or NASU go on strike because of allowances that some government officials have diverted.

Honestly, I would have been surprised if any of our universities made the list.
